The one thing I was really looking forward to in the 2.1 release of Publisher were the long awaited cross references. It seems it didn't make it into the final release. Still, never mind. I love the running headers.
Mind you considering PagePlus X9 had problems with cross references, maybe the wait will be worth it. Hopefully they will add captions and tables of figures as well. That would provide a really powerful facility. -

My favourite as a kid with its art deco looks and having the speed record of 126mph. Back then I didn't realise it was one of a quite a few class A4's. Designed by Nigel Gresley and built in 1938 by London & North Eastern Railway in Doncaster.
I'll likely shrink it down a bit so there's more sky above the funnel but have left it like that for now so it's easier to work on and see the details.
The outline's without the background otherwise it looks even more of a mess.
My favourite locomotive from the steam age. Streamlined and powerful. Very well done sir.

Thank you Archangel and PaulEC. I have now sorted it. It appears that my Windows 11 laptop did not like the Google path for downloading this font (maybe that was a variable font) but was happy when I did it through Microsoft. Anyway, thanks again for all the advice. Much appreciated.
Congratulations, the static fonts are downloaded with the variable fonts but are in the static sub-directory.

Be aware that there is a variable version of Open Sans. Affinity can't use variable fonts, so make sure you are installing the static versions.
You could also try using a font manager, rather than installing the font(s) directly into Windows. (Personally I use the free version of FontBase.)
Well spotted

Just, had someone attempt hacking my phone account via sending a code. Not sure if it is related but keep aware guys/

Thank you Old Bruce. Sadly, Windows keeps saying that it does not recognise Open Sans as a Font and won't let me put the download into the Fonts folder. I'm probably doing something wrong, but just can't get it to work.
Well if you downloaded the font into a download folder and unzipped it. you should be OK to right click on the filename of the otf or ttf file to install it on windows with the context menu option.
I just tried it and windows installed the files correctly.

This is unacceptable. Although I blame the hackers more than Serif for the attack. Security online is a minefield of problems, It is scary.

A font editor/font maker built into Designer would be awesome. Since you usually work with vector graphics in Designer anyway, it would be great to be able to convert your own font designs into fonts there as well.
This is not a silly request. Adding this sort of functionality to a suite of applications which includes all you need for creating print publications is really a sensible idea.
Implementation of a full font editor persona into Affinity would perhaps be preferable to simply allowing a basic export of designer vectors into a simple font file. However, it sounds like a major effort of system designer and programmer time to implement it in a high quality and professional manner.
If it were successfully implemented then Affinity would become a suite with serious clout in the creative field much more than it currently has. Although the purchase price of the software would also have to increase substantially.
Plugin support maybe the way to go for this to allow third party programs to fill the gap.

This is a feature we have been waiting for. Excellent.

I so want to see the movie "The Tinglers" lol
Sounds like a very interesting premise for a movie. A sort of proto-demonic ASMR dystopian future? Or film linked to a range of sweets or popping candy? Other interpretations may be available.

Very evocative of the era. My parents used to watch reruns of these types of movies on late-night TV in the early 1970's. I was reared on vintage horror and science fiction films. To be honest they were no scarier than Grimm's Fairytales.
Great Job. -

True.
However, what I see as the problem is that the "." after the word "violence" is hanging outside the text frame. If I replace the "." with a "," the same happens. However, if I replace it with any other character (even punctuation marks like ";") then the justification takes the word "violence" and the punctuation to a new line.
I'm not sure which @Michael S Harvey was meaning.
Fascinating and extremely curious. It does appear to be related to the optical justification issue using the font setting. Although turning it off for all paragraphs creates its own open quote glitch.

Running Affinity Publisher 2 v2.04 on Windows 10.
I copied some text from Microsoft Word (a story I have written). I wanted to see how Affinity handled the warning to readers. Experimenting with type sizes using the Verdana font I noticed an anomaly in the second paragraph at 16 points. I'm not sure why this justification glitch is happening.
Please look at the image and afpub file to see if this is a known issue. Other point sizes justify correctly. Although full justification looks quite odd.

Not exactly a solution to spot colour matching but this might be a useful freeware tool for Windows and Mac users. Seems to work with different colour spaces.
https://annystudio.com/software/colorpicker/
And this might be useful for Digital Artists rather than print artists.

Probably never.
I think they license they have from Pantone only covers the older color sets, and Pantone has changed their licensing for the newer sets in a way that discourages applications adding them. Look what Photoshop is doing, for example. They are completely removing their built-in Pantone palettes (if I understand the discussions correctly) and requiring users to directly license them from Pantone.
Time for an alternative colour matching scheme to compete with Pantone. Open source would be best much as Ghostscript did for Postscript.
Everyone would benefit and Pantone would no longer have a monopoly on the colour matching environment.

RTF is already supported, but not as well as DOCX.
Yes, it would be nice to have support for ODT, but the DOCX support in LibreOffice is pretty good (even if they do give you a big warning when you try it).
Thanks, @walt.farrellI didn't know that. I was wondering if there might be any possibility of supporting Word-perfect files. I know it's not as widespread use as Word but many legal professionals still use it. Although Corel has its brand of DTP software so maybe adding support in Affinity Publisher would not be a lucrative prospect.
-
I would love Affinity Publisher to import open document format files as well as the Docx format. I know Microsoft has taken over the world with their brand of office software but the main open-source suites should possibly be supported as well. Rich Text Format might also be useful.
Yes, we can save from Libre Office as Docx but risk losing information in the transfer.
Thanks again for the great software.

At least you had decent DTP software on your platform with its hi-res mono graphics. A very underrated platform the ST. It did well in the music industry and low-end DTP.
Amiga had gotten got the video market sewn up but played second fiddle to the ST in the music field. Although the Amiga did well with multitasking.

I'm not disagreeing. And would never install something that was so horrendously advertised. Gave me Swiftkey shudders.
Agree with you... should be an offline, optimised spell check and grammar facility, especially given that one of the apps is called "Publisher" and the ultimate goal of all design works is... publishing, in one form or another... so we need an "Editor" of some sort to look over our shoulder, that's better than the one in Microsoft Word and significantly faster than direct entry within Indesign.
I must admit I miss Proper Grammar II by Softwood on the Amiga. It was the only decent grammar checker on that platform. It was incorporated into Final Writer though. Really with the advent of deep learning algorithms, I would assume that an AI Editor will not be too far away. Whether that will be offline, however, will remain to be seen.

You might make a case for these features in Publisher, but other than the Story Editor, they are mostly superfluous even there, and the Story Editor has been requested already numerous times. These features don't really make sense for Photo or Designer.
I was thinking of Publisher in particular. Although the thesaurus facility would be useful in Photo and Designer. Not so much the grammar checker perhaps. Although Artistic Text might benefit from a Grammar Checker as well.

Yes but Grammarly doesn't integrate well with other apps and does not work without the internet.

One would have thought that as a suite of applications there could be a unified template dialogue. All the apps use the same file format, so why not unify the template choices? Or simply allow the sharing of template presets between installed applications.

Strictly speaking, this is not a bug, but a feature that hasn't been implemented. It is a very good idea though, and I hope Serif take note and implements something that will provide a similar feature, We wait with bated breath.

First test of complex drawing in Affinity Designer 2. Crashed three times - first crash moderate data loss, the following second significant data loss. Image is not finished yet, but I ordered a new computer and will wait for the new rig to arrive before continuing to work on this 100% vector drawing. Rendered image on top, vector outline below. Progress sequence in my portfolio blog: https://communicats.blogspot.com/2022/11/continuing-jaguar-illustration-in.html
Update November 22 2022: Felt the urge to continue the project in spite of the unpleasant crash experiences on my very old computer (2004). I drew some reflections in the water and detailed the hair in the ear areas with the pen tool as Stuart RC suggested.
If that is what you can achieve on a very old computer. Goodness, knows what you will achieve with a more powerful and up-to-date beast of a machine. You sir are a legend. I am in awe of the quality of your work.

Affinity Publisher 2.1 sadly didn't get cross references.

Well, if they need extra time to get it right then good luck to them. Better a fully working feature than a feature which is only partly or shoddily implemented.
It means they are taking the feature seriously and that can only be a good thing.
