  1. I was just wondering. Who else find it slightly annoying that V2 files are not compatible with V1?

Though I have V2 of the Suite, I'm still working in V1 because of several issues (freezes, get to use to the different interface, etc).

But sometimes I would like to do small things in V2. However, because these files are not compatible with V1 I just stick to the V1 apps.

Is there any chance that in a V2 update this incompatibility between V1 and V2 will be resolved?

  2. I have the same problem after I upgraded my macOS from Catalina to Big Sur.

The Affinity apps really take a long time to startup (each time after a restart of the machine). After closing and opening the app again, the Affinity apps start very quickly.
FYI: I'm working on an iMac Pro (8-core, RAM 32GB, Radeon Pro Vega 56 8GB) with macOS Big Sur 11.4, and the Affinity suite (Photo, Designer, Publisher) version 1.9.3.

With Catalina, I observed the long startup times only once after a fresh install of the apps.

  3. Hi Affinity by Serif,

For black and white conversions it would be great when we could use the channel mixer, set to monochrome, and adjust each RGB channel separately like in PS.

I am aware of the other BW adjustment options in AP, but an option where we could use the channel mixer for black and white adjustments as in PS would be a great asset. Currently, I really miss this feature and - alas - installed PS again only for this feature 😞

  4. Just my 5 cents. I also upgraded to macOS Big Sur and the latest Affinity versions. I'm working with an iMac Pro (octa-core, 32GB RAM and 8GB GPU).
Big Sur is buggy. Latency, airdrop, but it also affected my Affinity Suite. Presets are gone, plugins does not work, latency, live preview of fonts does not work properly (tried different things), etc. I should have known. I was a bit too eager. My solution will be a downgrade to macOS Catalina this evening.
About Photoshop it is even more slower, but I can still work with Exposure and the Nik collection. That was not affected by the upgrade to Big Sur.

  5. Hi Lee D.

    Thank you for your answer.

That is where I made a mistake. The document was only automatically saved internally. Not to a specified location. So when I closed the document it was gone because I forgot to save it to this specified location. I learned from my mistake. But perhaps a feature for the iPad app could be developed so that the document is automatically saved to a prespecified location.

    Kind regards

  6. Okay. I just lost some detailed work when I closed a document in Affinity Designer on the Ipad. Apparently, I never saved it and when I closed the document it was gone.

It is not your fault. I should have saved it. But as I worked on it for many hours over several days I just forgot because I thought I already saved the latest version. But when the doc is open in the app and you do not save it, it is not automatically saved (as far as I know).

What about an automatic saving feature?

So when you open a new document in Affinity Designer (iPad version) it will be automatically saved when this feature is enabled when e.g. the app is closed and/ or after X minutes.

    Thank you.

I work with very large files with dot gradients, so there's millions of tiny dots all over the place. Adobe Illustrator literally wouldn't work with this file, I'd move my mouse and go to sleep before it actually responds. But on Designer I can sort of move around, probably because it actually uses the hardware resources unlike Illustrator.

I'm looking for very high end PC build so I can work smoothly on these extremely complex files. Assume no budget

    Thanks!

So the file was given to us as is except the gradient was just a normal gradient, no dots. We used an Illustrator plug-in to turn the gradient into dots (which is why they're individually clickable in Illustrator at least), I personally didn't do it but the person who did was using an i7-4770k, 32gb (or less?) ram, 860 evo ssd, and a GTX 970.

As far as I know it took several days and the computer was unusable haha. We hit print as soon as it was ready, no workflow issues here.

That was a fun test. On my iMac Pro (Xeon W 3.2Ghz base 8-core/ 16 threads, 32GB RAM, Radeon Vega Pro 56 8GB) the file opened fairly quickly. It was responsive, and obviously very snappy when the dot-gradient layer was unselected.

Zooming in was okay, bit sluggish. I went to 11754943.0%. Whilst zooming in Affinity Designer used around 35 threads (CPU tab in Activity Monitor) and consumed around 2GB RAM. The machine remained quiet and cool.

Though I was not able to select one of the single dots in the dot-gradient layer.

Ps: I wanted to share a screenshot of the zoomed in file at 11754943.0%. But got a -200 error from the website.

  8. Hi Affinity By Serif,

I'm using Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer.

I noticed that once I have imported new brushes, I cannot re-order brush categories or sort the brush categories by name. The most recent imported brushes are at the bottom of the scroll down menu in the brushes panel.

Would it be possible to add such an ordering or sorting feature so that users can actually order the brush categories according to their own preferences?

< I could not find such a feature/ functionality in Photo or Designer. >

    Would be nice.

    With kind regards, Bastiaan

    Hi all,

Small question on brushes. In Affinity Designer we have the option to work with vector and raster brushes. We can also import brushes.

I noticed that when I imported "DAUB | Comics Basic Set.afbrushes" in vector mode ("draw persona"), this set was not available, but is available in the raster mode ("pixel persona"). So, from this I conclude that *.abr or *.afbrushes are vector or raster specific.

    Is that a correct conclusion?

Is there a possibility to use the same set of brushes in both vector and raster mode?

    Hope my questions are clear.

    O

A while ago I posted above questions. Well, it is clear for me. There are vector and raster brushes available. The vector brushes are available in the draw persona and the raster brushes in the pixel persona. In each persona you can import both type of brushes. Once imported you can only use them in the specific persona.

I saw that some people have trouble with importing brushes. Until now I did not have problems importing Adobe or Affinity brushes.

  11. Hi Fixx,

Thank you for your reply and confirming what I was actually thinking. After posting my question, I have purchased Affinity Designer where I saw similar behaviour, except when I used the vector brush. By using the vector brush (which is not available in Affinity Photo) and 'painting' onto a layer I was able to control to global colour.

Meanwhile I have also read a bit on vector art versus pixel art. By doing so I also think that I understand why global colour is a vector concept and not generally used in pixel graphics.

Looking again at Affinity Photo Help, I actually see that the part on global colour is part of the section titled "Vector specific". :-|

Learnt quite a lot from such probably simple question...

  12. Hi all,

First of all, I'm a big fan of Affinity Photo. Used Pixelmator before (respect for the developers). But Affinity Photo really brings photo editing forward. I love the non-destructive way of live and adjustment layers. But there is so much more.

Now my question. Currently playing around with global colours in Affinity Photo. Affinity Photo help mentions in the "Global colours" section that "The global colour could be applied as a solid fill, stroke, or a colour used in the gradient fill." This section also specifies two ways of setting global colours:

    1. "To create a global colour from an existing object"; and

    2. "To create a global colour from scratch".

I did both in attached sample. I set red by following 1., taking the colour of one of the red "curve layers", and blue by 2.

In attached sample, you see 5 layers. Two layers with blue objects (one pixel generated with a brush and one curve generated with the pen tool); and three layers with red objects (one pixel generated with a brush and two curves generated with a pen tool). All objects coloured with global colours.

Now, when I select one of the global colours in the Swatches panel -> select -> right click -> edit fill -> change colour, only the colour(s) of the curve layers change and not the pixel layer. Why? As I would expect that the pixel layer, generated by using global colours would also change.
