  1. Thank you JFisher and MEB. I first select the object I want to adjust in the Background layer; then I add an adjustment layer, pick from the drop down menu, apply the adjustment to the selection and it seems to work. However, 2 other issues with selections: 1. If I try to select another area to apply a DIFFERENT adjustment to, and then add another adjustment layer, it affects BOTH layers instead of just the 2nd adjustment layer. 2. If I try to cut (Command+C) one of the selected objects and paste it into another photo, it doesn't work. More seriously, I've noticed twice that when I use Affinity Photo for a few hours, my computer gets extremely overheated and starts making a low noise I've never heard before. What is this? As soon as I exit out of Affinity, the computer cools down and the noise stops. Please help.
  2. I've been viewing the Affinity Photo in-house tutorials, and have found them difficult to follow, too fast, and generally unhelpful. Even after watching more than once I feel I am more confused than enlightened. Can you recommend current tutorials that are more methodical, more detailed, geared to a novice user and easier to follow and learn from? Thank you.
  3. Thank you for the interesting and helpful responses! Thank you Uuiop, yes, I do feel information overload and time away from the task is very revitalizing. I've mostly used Photos for Mac and Picasa, and they're very basic. Pixelrain, I have no idea what raster means and have never heard the word. I also don't know what Gaussian means. I guess I have to accept that this is a very slow, labor-intensive process. Mbd and Uuiop I appreciate the recommendation to focus on Curves. I did that and playing with curves seems to perform miracles for photos! Thank you! Wonder if any of you can recommend a good and methodical tutorial for the novice. I have found the Affinity tutorials to be done way, way too fast, skipping a lot of necessary explanations, so I'll try to find some on youtube, but if you have any recommendations I'd appreciate it. Thanks again!
  4. When I select an object to adjust with the selection brush, and then add an adjustment layer and choose an adjustment from the drop down menu, the following happens: a) no matter what adjustment I select (brightness, exposure, etc) nothing changes inside the selected object. b) when I deselect the selection using Command+D, a solid white line remains around the object I selected. How to make this work correctly? Thank you. Melanie
  5. For those of us new to AP and not technically sophisticated, what are the most important tools and skills to master in order to jump in and start editing photos? I feel as though I'm spending all my time on tutorials and becoming overwhelmed, obsessing about what I can't do. I want to start editing photos! Thanks -- Melanie
  6. In Photoshop I have been using the black and white point sliders to eliminate clipping in the histogram. They are the fastest way to deal with clipping that I know of. However, I can't find the black and white point sliders in Affinity Photo. Please help. Thank you. Melanie
  7. Chris I tried to download and open the zip file of Dream Skies but my computer said it was not an Affinity Photo file. What application did you use to open and add this file to Affinity Photo on a Mac? Or is it not for a Mac?
  8. The inpainting option under the Edit menu is ALWAYS grayed out, even when I'm using the inpainting brush (or not using it) chosen from the tools menu on the left, and working on a pixel (background) layer. What is wrong? Also, I made a bunch of edits on the background layer, then wanted to undo the ENTIRE history of edits (shown under history). How do you undo the ENTIRE history, not just undo one by one? Thank you. Melanie7
