Thanks Walt, Must be something that I had never 'noticed' before, even when experimenting trying to find ways of showing applied masters in response to others queries! I like the way it shows the order in which masters were applied to a page, rather than just listing them alphabetically. Pman

On use of masters:- I note that in beta 133, Serif have introduced showing which master/s is/are applied to a page when you hover the mouse over a page in the Pages tab. It even shows in which order they were applied too. It shows that Serif are listening to what many have felt would be a great help. Well done, Serif!! Pman, 24./09/2018 at 16:58

Well done Serif on Beta 133. in response to requests it now includes new features including i) when you hover your mouse pointer over a page in the Pages tab, it now shows which master/s applied to that page No doubt there will be some who think you shouldn't have to hover your mouse over a page to find out but personally I think it's great! ii) When you start a new document, you can select whether images in your new document should be embedded or linked, again something that many have requested. [In case some people are wondering, I am using the Light user interface rather than the default Dark, while I am experimenting. Pman

affinity publisher beta
PMan replied to marfbum's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
I can't offer you any further advice myself. It seems very strange that you've managed to install Designer and Photo yet Publisher Beta wont install. That usually indicates a conflict with some other running programme , quite often an anti-virus prog which is why I suggested you turn it off while attempting an install. Perhaps someone else out there has a further suggestion. Yes I've installed v133 and used it - noticed right away on page setup dialogue box that users can now decide at that stage whether to embed or link images as they are inserted, great news for a lot of people who have been asking for just that so well done, Serif!! affinity publisher beta
PMan replied to marfbum's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
Hi Marfbum Can you confirm your system proprties (right click on This PC on your desktop and select properties. This should give you a screen like this (some personal details blanked out) . If you have not got a 64 bit system you will not be able to install Affinity Publisher. A thought -Have you successfully installed Affinity Photo or Designer? If you had, then I can't explain why you are having a problem installing Publisher, and I don't know if any one else could without an error log . However if you do have a 64bit system you could try going to you could go back to https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/publisher/, click on the download button and download from there from Pman -
affinity publisher beta
PMan replied to marfbum's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
Have you checked that your system meets the minimum requirement (Windows 64 bit, min 2gb Ram 593 mB hard drive space etc (see these at https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/publisher/desktop/full-feature-list/ ) If it does then the next steps that I would take are i) delete your present downloaded installation file then download the newest version (beta 1.7.0.128). ii)turn OFF your wifi connection and disable your anti-virus programme. Anti-virus programmes are known to falsely identify an installing programme as a threat. Your wifi isn't needed for installation and it is therefore safest to have it off while your anti-virus is off. iii) start the installation using your new downloaded installation file. This should then give you a successful installation and then you can turn on your anti-virus programme again and finally your wifi. Hope this brings you sucess -

My next suggestion would be to uninstall your beta program and then re-install the latest version and try running it again. -
affinity publisher beta
PMan replied to marfbum's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
Can you give more information? What platform are you working on? Window or Mac? Has it failed to load? If so try loading it with the Ctrl key held down and when a dialogue box opens, select everything. This will reset Affinity Publisher to its default settings . Has it 'failed' while you were working on something -if so did it fail on the same task every time? What were you trying to do? Did you get a 'crash report' to send to Serif? Information is required in order for someone to help you, please. -
Publisher - Editing Duplicated Text
PMan replied to ChrisMcDee's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
y Sorry was working from memory only -answered using just my phone- computer not available Should have been Open Symbols tab not Object tab {no such thing!] . Then select the page you want to change item, open the Master tab on Layers and expand it, select the item (text box shown in my example). The item is selected and you can then click on the Sync symbol and edit the item without the Master page item being changed. If you want to move the item from the position set by the Master page then use the Detach button as well -
Publisher - Editing Duplicated Text
PMan replied to ChrisMcDee's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
There is a way. First open Objects tab (View - Studio - Objects). Next select a page on which you want to change an element to differ from the Master used. With the page selected go to the Master Layer and expand it. Select from the Master Layer the item and then go to the Objects tab and click on Sync ONCE. The item can now be edited without altering the Master Pshe -

Assets Create New category
PMan replied to jrkay's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
Hi jrkay, Maybe this attached document could assist you. Pman Creating Assets Categories.afpub -
Another thing about that I don't know is a bug or not, but once you select a copy of a symbol and click on Sync, you can edit that copy without affecting others but if you click on Sync again, synchronisation does not seem to be applied to the copy you have been working on even though the help file infers that you can enable synchronisation again. Other copies of the symbol remain synchronised so clicking on one and altering the colour fill, say, will update all of the copies which have not yet been unsynced. So my problem is I don't seem to be able to re-enable synching,

Change Master page objects on a content page
PMan replied to Typolix's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Thanks Aammppaa This was not a nested symbol (I haven't tried that yet) but I have been advised by a moderator not to try inserting symbols stored on the Symbols tab onto a Master page. They are fine when inserted onto any other page Pman -
Change Master page objects on a content page
PMan replied to Typolix's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Herr's a hint about a problem I encountered and put as a possible bug on Reporting bugs. Don't try adding a symbol onto a Master page(you can create a symbol to use anywhere in your document by selecting a feature and clicking on Create on the symbols tab) A moderator who replied to my bug report says that Master pages are not designed to handle symbols in the same way as a normal page. So what happens if you create a symbol and try adding as an entry on a master page? Well, it appears correctly on the master page but all pages derived from the master contain multiple images along the path followed by you dragging the symbol onto the master. see figures below Moral - Don't use Symbols tab to amend a master page, though it is fine to alter/add to any other page. Pman -
Hi MEB I found a further problem before I came back to this forum. If you create a symbol and drag it on to a master page, then all pages linked to the master page contain multiple copies of the symbol, figure 1,along its dragged path, figure 2, though the symbol appears correctly on the master page. Also while writing this, Publisher Beta crashed whilst displaying the pages like the one in figure 2. Filled in crash report and sent it. Thank you for your comment. Following that and my experiences I will definitely not use symbols on the master page again! Pman

Hi, I have just started using Publisher Beta 1.7.0.128 and I've been investigated how to edit text frames and picture frames, on a page, which are inherited from a Master page. Once I've opened a page and selected the Master layer and selected a frame, then if I change anything in that frame, the Master page frame is also updated to show the same change. However, on the Symbols tab , if I click ONCE on the Sync button. I can alter the image/text on the page without the Master being updated. If I then click ONCE on the Sync again (quite hard on the Dark setting to see the change in the button), any change to the frame does NOT affect the Master any more. The same happens if I click on the Detach button. Again I cannot revert back to having changes updated on the Master page. Is this a bug or does it mean that having chosen Sync or Detach, that I cannot toggle between updating the Master from a page and updating just the individual page Pman

Image Cutout Studio
PMan replied to Kevin G's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
In PagePlus I did it by i) copying the background layer of my image [as say 'work layer'] then deleting the background layer ii) making a selection of the image foreground that I wanted then on the Layers tab, making a mask with the selection visible then deleting the 'work layer' iii) again select the image using freehand selection tool and going Select menu and inverting the selection so that the background (black and white checks) is selected then pressing Delete and finally going to Select and choose Deselect. iv) Next I exported the image as PNG but I found that the background was still opaque white. I then found that if I increased the colour depth to 32 in the export to PNG dialogue box the background became transparent Once you have a transparent background you can insert your image into Publisher and then wrap your text to the image so that text covered by the image becomes visible. In my example below I do not claim that the result is pleasing, but it does show what happens. Obviously you should use images with reasonably regular outline, not one with irregular shape as in my example. GIMP (free image manipulation software) makes it easier to do and there are lots of tutorials on web explaining image with tranparency.afpub -
No master info which page belongs to
PMan replied to kotos's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
to Kotos, a workaround to help you at the moment if you want to see which master is applied to a page if Walt_Farrel's hint of hovering your mouse over the page in the Pages pane would be to insert an identifier on each master page which will show on each page while you are editing and then to either remove them before you print your document or set them to be white. (see attached publication). Obviously it would be nicer if Publisher could do this automatically in some way. As I've never used indesign I don't know how that programme achieves your requirement. Pman Identifying which master page is in use.afpub -
Have found out that Publisher Beta lets you create a new category and sub-categories in Assets. Therefore my first post is in fact redundant. When I'd tried to find a way earlier I had been clicking on the properties button of an existing sub-category of the iOS12 assets, instead of the properties button of the Asset panel itself at the top right. This is shown on the attached document Creating Assets categories However this is certainly something that needs to be covered in a tutorial such as the one in Arba's post [above] - obviously there must be some differences between Publisher for iOS and for Windows. I run Windows 10 and the Assets panel in Windows is ENABLED by default whereas the video above says you have to enable it as it is DISABLED by default. If you are not up to speed with using assets to speed up production, please do watch the video, it is very informative. Pman Creating Assets Categories.afpub

Hi Arba, I have regularly used assets for a long time. However I have seen from quite a few threads that people don't seem to understand how or what the Assets tab can do and that's why I wondered if a tutorial on Assets could be posted on the Publisher Beta tutorials page. Thanks for the link and I'll watch it to see if I can improve my use usually to store text clips and logos that I frequently use across documents Pman

Assets tab works but could we have a new tab perhaps labelled 'User' on which the user can put their own assets rather than adding them to rather crowded existing ones? Perhaps a tutorial on the use of assets which many don't seem to understand?

Mixing pages between documents
PMan replied to km.au's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Hi km.au. If you open two documents and go to Window menu and select Float All, then you will have two documents open side by side. If you use the Selection tool (Arrow, top left of lefthand tool bar you can select what you want to copy from the first document. You can then either use Edit menu-Copy or Right click and select Copy or even hold down the Ctrl key and tap C. Then simply click on top of the second document to make it the active window and hold down Ctrl and tap V or go to Edit-Paste. Everything selected from the first document will be copied with identical positioning in the second document. If you have multiple pages in both documents, simply make sure that you select the correct page to copy FROM in document 1 and select the correct page to copy TO in document 2. from Pman -
improved picture frame tool
PMan replied to Thisismandatory's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Hi, If you have placed an image in a picture frame and you want to return it to its native properties i) select the image/frame, then going to Preferences (top left) and selecting None (picture will not be scaled). Image will revert to its original size ii) As someone else stated, if you double click on an image in a picture frame you can resize it separately and still revert to its original size using i) above or use any of the other Scales in Preferences Pman
