Thanks, Jeff. Though as edit above, I left it for a while and it rebooted ok. I read that this gives time for the capacitors to fully discharge and so let voltages drop to fully zero. I have RAID on the desktop and backup to a Synology NAS system so I wouldn't lose much data (though the hassle of a dead system is counted in days, at least).

I would check, but I've now got an unusable desktop system (writing this on portable) following the latest HDR crash. AP was hanging or crashing the computer every couple of merges (memory leak?). Five 42 Mpx RAW images (40Mb each). Not much else going on (browser open). Now, the computer won't boot. There's power and it all seems happy -- except nothing appears on either display. I've hard rebooted and fully power cycled several times. F8 at startup has no effect so I'm wondering if it's something to do with the monitor system. I've tried unplugging and plugging in monitor cables to no avail. But then pressing the power switch on the desktop results in an immediate power down, suggesting the system is stuck somewhere near the beginning of the boot sequence. The disk system is on RAID and reported health disks in a recent analysis. Any ideas? ---- Edit: I gave it a while for capacitors to discharge and tried again. Now the computer's working again. Phew!

When I've an HDR Merge going on, I tend to head off to do other things. However, when I do this there's a tendency to come back later and the merge has frozen. Task Manager is then needed to kill AP. I'm guessing it's a memory-intensive activity (it clearly uses lots of processor cycles) and may be hitting the out-of-resource buffers. Still, it's pretty untidy just to hang.

Expand the canvas a bit Add fx Outline, Fill style: Any. Crop back to edge of outline. It's a nice effect but and option for a squared option to fill out the rectangular image frame would be good. A fill layer below kind of works but is not perfect. If you do a Edit/Matte just to fill in the corners, it flattens the outline, removing the gradient (bug?). The matte colour just goes on top of the outline like it wasn't there.

File/Place gotcha (easy fix)
dmstraker replied to dmstraker's topic in [ARCHIVE] Photo beta on Windows threads
Nice workaround -- thanks, Walt! -
I know that Place has been tweaked for text and image, but there's a thing I keep tripping over, for which there's a very simple fix. I want to place an image, but I happen to have a text layer selected, so it offers me text placement only. This is understandable, but it's a real pain. The very easy fix is in the drop-down in the file dialogue. As it is, it only offers text files. All you need to do is add an extra option in the drop-down for image files. Thank you so much!

In Microsoft Word, you can enter, in a blank paragraph '=rand(x,y)', followed by Return. This will create filler text with x paragraphs and y sentences in each. It would be helpful for people designing areas of text to be able to do this). Probably a good idea for Designer, too. tx

Info crosshairs left behind
dmstraker replied to dmstraker's topic in Feedback for Affinity Photo V1 on Desktop
That looks like an ad absurdum argument. When there is value in things remaining, then of course they should remain. But in the case of the info panel, there is no value in the crosshairs remaining when the info panel is dismissed. To get rid of it, the user has to re-initiate the panel and change the selection. In this case, it simply makes sense to hide the crosshairs when the panel is dismissed. -
Info crosshairs left behind
dmstraker replied to dmstraker's topic in Feedback for Affinity Photo V1 on Desktop
Yes, but I'd still classify this as a defect. The purpose of the cross-hairs disappears when you dismiss the info panel. The cross-hairs should go with it. If reintroducing the panel retains the selection of crosshairs, then the crosshairs on the image should reappear then. -
Helpful. Thanks John. Nice presentation of findings, too. Further playing: Polar, r blank, t=noise(a,b) gives circles using image colours Could be good as a background frame for actual image (use non-zero Extend Mode) Polar, r blank, t=noise(r,r) gives interesting dotty spacey circly thing (umm) Cartesian, x=a*max(x,y), y=b*min(x,y) gives diagonal flip. Oh dear. I see hours of pointless fun ahead...

View/Studio/Info Drag from Sample from Location to position cross-hairs on image Close Info panel The little red cross-hairs remains on the image. Shouldn't the cross-hairs disappear with the panel?

In the Affinity Photo Stroke Panel, it says ' Style—Select a line style button to change how the line is drawn. Choose from None, Solid Line Style, Dash Line Style, and Texture Line Style, respectively. The last option applies the currently selected brush in the Brushes panel to the stroke. ' I'm having trouble getting the Pen tool to use the Texture option in using the current brush. Any tips? Thanks.

Double-clicks seem to not always go to zero: Channel Mixer, double-clicking a 100% default goes to zero. Posterise goes to 4 levels (from default 16). Threshold goes to 50%. Lens Filter goes to default 50%. fx Outer/Inner Shadow Opacity goes to 100%, Radius to 5px, Intensity to 50%. ...and so on. This doesn't bother me, btw. Some of these are fairly handy. Neatly also: if you double-click to zero, then double-click again, it returns to its former value (handy if the double-click was an accident, for testing with-without changes).

HSL doesn't work in beta 1.7.0.284
dmstraker replied to dke's topic in [ARCHIVE] Photo beta on Windows threads
Thanks, dke. This indicates that I've posted enough info for the Affinity folks to calculate the DPI as described. The 'Scale and Layout' percentage control seems to be used to control layout and text, to help programmers scale boxes and text to usable and readable sizes, though quite rightly they do not change screen resolution, allowing images to take advantage of the underlying screen resolution. I guess it doesn't help that the Scale and Layout info is a bit vague where says 'text, apps and other items', without indicating what those 'other items' might be or what might be done. -

Where would I find DPI, @Patrick Connor? No indication in display adaptor properties as below. Can you calculate from screen size and resolution as previous message? (Note: Philips display has 'Scale and Layout' at 150%, while Benq is at 100%. -

Two screens. Top screen is Philips 40" 4k, 3840 x 2160. Bottom screen is Benq 18122 21" 1920 x 1080. Aha. Tried it on top screen and HSL works ok. Tried it on bottom screen. HSL adjustment box appears on top window. Dragging it down to bottom window and crash happens just as I'm dragging it in! -

From scratch. Load jpg (I've tried several). Apply HSL. Adjustment box doesn't even come up. Freeze then crash the moment you click HSL.
