affinity photo AP • Wild Swans — Up Close & Personal!

Seriously, you're extremely good at this... but then, I think you know that already ;) Number 3 for me as well - I'm not sure it could've been any more perfect!?! -
affinity designer Ohhh, My Strawberry Monkey...
MattP replied to My Strawberry Monkey's topic in Share your work
Really interesting to hear how you got on - thanks for the update, Allan! :) It's SO frustrating to be told that being proactive is basically a bad thing and that they'd prefer you to go in with half-baked vague ideas and a sketch on the back of a cigarette packet! :S Grrrrr.... Stick with your own ideas and control things the way you want to - if you don't you will never be happy no matter what they offer you. It sounds like the first meeting was very positive in terms of the book itself and, with any luck, one of the other publishers you see will be a better fit and they'll be incredibly happy you walked through the door - as will you! ;) Keep us updated please! :D Matt (officially book customer #1, YES!!!!)- 46 replies

The simple answer to this, seems to be that if you're uploading an Affinity Designer file (.afdesign) then you need to be selecting N/A because the .afdesign file is definitely not compatible with any version of Adobe's products. If you're uploading a .psd file then you're best to just put the most recent version of CC they have available on their list because anyone who is hooked into the subscription model will have the latest version anyway. They allow upload of Quark and CorelDRAW files too, so it's not like everyone going to that site expects PhotoShop files all the time...

My MacBook Pro running bootcamp refuses to work in the same way as you describe (it is a 2015 model with 'Force touch' touchpad) however I know that the non-'Force touch' model used by the developer next to me does work correctly... There are definitely odd things happening with touch pads, but I don't believe it's the software that's at fault...

AD 1.5.5 breaks pinch to zoom gesture
MattP replied to ronnyb's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
My 'pinch to zoom gesture' stops working at random in many applications and has done since El Capitan... A reboot always fixes it... If it's always going wrong in only Affinity for you then it's something we need to look into - but I have to say that the piece of code that does it is simply an OS X gesture hook and hasn't changed since our initial development on OS X Lion... :/ -
Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5.5 - Beta 1)

I'm not having this issue... Can I ask whereabouts you're selecting things? In the Layers panel, or on the document itself? -
Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5.5 - Beta 1)
MattP replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
Hi, As mentioned above, the intention of this beta version is to improve stability of the released product and not to add new features. As soon as this version is released to the App Store we will move on to betas which include new functionality. Hope that makes sense? :) Matt -
Status: Customer Beta Purpose: Fixes & Minor Improvements Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer Mac App Store: Not Submitted Download: 1.5.5 Beta 1 Here The purpose of this version is to improve the stability of the released product. It contains no dangerous changes, only fixes and minor usability improvements. We would recommend that all users download and use this version. It should be considered more reliable than the current Mac App Store version (1.5.4) To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it. Fixes/Improvements Controversial change to pixel documents: 100% view now maps document pixels directly to screen pixels. If you have a retina Mac you will now see 100% view showing a pixel in the document on each pixel on your display. Wireframe view mode now allows the user to select locked items by click or marquee. Basically, if you're in wireframe view and you can see it, you can now click it to select it. This makes wireframe view much more useful for toggling on/off to select specific items in the document. With rulers visible and a high-frequency input device such as a pen tablet (or a mouse in macOS Sierra) the rulers would make the document update very slowly, this has been resolved. SVG export of gradients is now more compatible with QuickLook. Stability fixes for text. Fixed bug applying OpenType contextual rules. Fix for crashes with 32bit documents on Lion and Mountain Lion. Fix for right-clicking a text object in the Text tool failing to select the current word if the user is over the caret. Improved PSD import/export of HSL adjustments. Improved PSD import of fill layers with empty stroke masks and also parse line origination data. Import badly-formed PSD files created by Marmoset. Fix for occasional crash with embedded documents. PDF export fix for Overprint flag which was not getting unset at certain times, leading to items unintentionally overprinting. Fix for system chime noise when holding Cmd+Alt+Space. Fix for layers panel showing incorrect document information when changing from Separated window mode to normal mode if multiple documents are open. Fix for some images opening and saying they are 1dpi

affinity designer Moggles Vector Book cover
MattP replied to kevinmcsherry's topic in Share your work
Hi Kevin, The opacity in the Effects panel is actually just 'Fill Opacity'. Try this test: Make a red ellipse, add an outer shadow. Now go to Fill Opacity and drag it down - you'll see that the red ellipse changes opacity, but the shadow doesn't - that's different to what happens when you adjust the Layer Opacity in the Layers panel :) Hope that makes some sense? Thanks, Matt -
Zoom at 100% is different to other programs
MattP replied to Imprex's topic in [ARCHIVE] Photo beta on Windows threads
Size variance is one of the many configurable 'Dynamics' available in the brush editor. Just double-click a brush to edit it and go to the 'Dynamics' tab -
Zoom at 100% is different to other programs
MattP replied to Imprex's topic in [ARCHIVE] Photo beta on Windows threads
Rafal - set your brush to not vary size with pressure and test your results - a 5px brush will generate a nozzle of 5px. When you apply pressure, we show pressure as a variance about the nominal size, so it will get larger than 5 or smaller than 5. The brush editor dialogue has blue variance markers shown around the width slider so you can clearly see that it will vary larger. We are in control of all stages and all quality/samplers in place. Everything can be modified and I will talk to Mark about what we will agree to do. I wrote the Mac version and I know why I think it is desirable to act as it does - but as I said earlier we could add a preference to pretend that the screen scaling is 100% and then it will act like the other software you are used to. Thanks, Matt -
Zoom at 100% is different to other programs
MattP replied to Imprex's topic in [ARCHIVE] Photo beta on Windows threads
Can I ask a question... if you export an image and put it on a website and view it in a browser, what size does it appear on your screen? The same size as PhotoShop showed at 100% or the same size Affinity showed at 100%? Genuinely just asking because I know on Mac I'd expect it to be the same size shown in Affinity... Perhaps Windows has different conventions? The behaviour you're seeing in other programs is because 'retina' (high density) screens came about AFTER the software was written and the easiest way to adopt it is to simply ignore it... we did it the way it works in Affinity on purpose but if it's such an issue then there may be room for a preferences item to turn off the scaling-aware view... -
Very slick! :)

Go to the Macro panel and choose to 'Import' and import that .afmacro file - that should work (mine did). I think there is a bit of confusion about the .afmacro vs .afmacros extension - one is an individual macro (to be imported to the Macro panel) and the other is a collection of Macros to be imported to the Library panel. I think we should make this much easier in the future, sorry...

Right, just tried it and it works as I expected... In the Export Persona, select a slice, set it up with multiple exports, each of which has a different multiplier (0.75x, 0.5x, 0.25x, etc). This will now export the slice to many output files, auto-named with the correct suffix to denote its scale, but all into one folder. To set each export to go into a specific folder, click the name button to the right of each export item and a popup will appear. Just type at the start of the 'Path components' section your desired folder name followed by a '/'. Now when you export they will all go into their own folders as you asked for. Now with the slice itself selected, go to the little menu icon at the top right of that studio panel and choose 'Create export setup preset...' and give it a name (e.g. Android) Now you can select another slice and just simply choose the 'Android' export preset and it will apply that preset onto it, automatically creating the required export scales and initialising output folder information. Hope that's what you were looking for? Thanks, Matt

1.5.1 just addressed a couple of small niggles that we found - we thought it was better to not let users experience the problems, at the expense of bugging them to update 2 days in a row - sorry :(
-
SrPx is right that it's unlikely the defaults would be perfectly suited to your specific task (and it seems clear that it's not in this instance). I do believe that Photo allows ZIP compression for images output to PDF from the 'more' button on the export dialog, and if your image is broadly flat colours you will get better results and possibly even a smaller file size as a result :) Let us know how you get on! Matt

I can't get to my Mac to give firm instructions at this moment, but exporting to folders can be done by simply giving the export name a preceding 'foldername\exportname' and exports can specify specific widths, heights or scales, so I'd imagine you can do what you're looking for. You should also be able to save new export configurations to reapply.... I'll look into this more tomorrow morning and report back, but thought that might give you enough ideas to give it a try in the meantime? Thanks, Matt

AutoTrace (convert raster image to vector)
MattP replied to eross21's topic in Feedback for Affinity Designer V1 on Desktop
We already have a full tracing engine that we used within the more recent drawPlus versions - it's actually pretty good, but there are a few flaws that actually add up to being enough of a problem that we were unhappy to include it at present. We'd rather include no tracing functionality at all until we have something we can be proud of - it's just the way that we like to work :) If we weren't happy, then within a few hours you'd see why and then you'd be unhappy too - and that's not what anybody wants...- 474 replies

PDF is a vector format too - so can be resolution independent :) If you mean you're trying to trace some PNG or JPG images, why not share one with us so we could give you some guidance? Without seeing an example, I think you'll need to be looking at our tutorials on how to use the Pen Tool :) Thanks, Matt

[ADe] Affinity Designer, what about 2.0?
MattP replied to Hummanoid's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
We used to have a 'Object Inspector' panel in DrawPlus and have had it many, many years - it's definitely a valuable thing and I expect that we'll come out with a new, improved version for Affinity Designer in time... Thank you for all the other ideas and suggestions, I'm certainly reading them with interest! :) Matt
