  1. Hello,

Affinity Photo has a special filter that will help you dramatically here. Just open your image and then go to Filters->Colours->Erase White Paper. That filter is designed for this purpose. Your image appears to be on a very yellowed background though, so perhaps you should either adjust the brightness/contrast first, or add a black/white adjustment and slide the yellow slider to maximum first. Remember to merge this down onto the background layer before choosing the 'Erase white paper' filter.

    Hope that helps,

    Matt

  2. Yeah, tried it all (pressure, played with brush settings) with no luck. I've installed reinstalled drivers (even used the rebranded versions), opened AD before and after tablet is plugged in, reinstalled the software before and after drivers are installed. Nothing. No luck.

Can I just ask if this is on Windows or macOS? Thanks :)

  3. Hi jamesrobwarner,

Each platform is a separate purchase, I'm afraid... :(   It's basically all down to the fact that we sell on the Mac App Store and that gives us 2 big problems: Apple will never divulge customer details to us, so we have no idea if you have bought a copy or not in order for us to send a complimentary license for Windows, secondly if you'd bought it on Windows first then the App Store has no mechanism to give free licenses for the Mac version.

So because of this, we set the price to be attractive so it isn't too much of a terrible hardship if a customer needs both... It depends on your MacBook Pro's specifications vs. your Windows machine's specifications, but as an insider tip: If you need to decide which platform of the two to purchase it on, I'd personally buy it for Mac because the new features are always added to our Mac versions first and then the Windows team port the changes over, so you'll get the best experience...

    Thanks,

    Matt

  4. Did you happen to click while holding a keyboard modifier? If so, you could be in 'isolation mode' where you only view the selected object. If that's the case, just select one of the other objects in the layers panel, or press Escape to remove your current selection. Alternatively, if it's just a view zoom level thing then press Cmd+0 to zoom the view to fit.

    Hope that helps,

    Matt

  5. As you've noted, symbols are not exported as symbols to SVG yet - this will be implemented in the future :)

Our symbols allow for individual elements within the symbol to be modified without updating all instances, so it's not quite as simple as saying 'that's a symbol, reuse the existing symbol' as they need to check all attributes of all objects they contain to check they would be identical to a master instance - and as they don't currently do that, we can't risk outputting them as symbols to SVG. We will implement this though...

    Thanks,

    Matt

  6. Seriously, any user of this forum must be able to see from my post history that I will bend over backwards to help anyone out and will change pretty much any area of the application where it makes sense so that users are happy - and the point I'm trying to make here is that calling it PPI is a more specific usage of calling it DPI. DPI is still a completely valid term to use for screen-specific output, but the 'dots' refer to pixels at that point. Whereas PPI is more specific, it refers only to pixels. It's a less ambiguous term, so I have agreed at the outset that it would be more correct, but DPI is not wrong and it is more accessible to the rest of the world, hence why it said DPI in the first place. I'm sorry if I've not made as much sense as normal on this, I'm only able to get on the forum intermittently at the moment and not for very long at a time... :(

  7. So maybe we simplify everything? It will be easier for all of us. Let's delete the CMYK color space, then it will be much easier. With this approach to the subject, I see no future for Affinity Photo.

Or instead, perhaps we don't overreact and actually realise that there are many deliberate inconsistencies in most applications you use which help with common understanding, although they may not be strictly completely correct. Just because you're aware of this one, you're more attuned to it and it jars with you - but to most people, nothing has been lost and it's easier to understand what was meant.

Edit: Actually, as has been mentioned, it's not just software that this 'incorrect for the sake of being more understandable to the masses' is endemic, it's most things in life... it's just that you care about this one, so you have a problem with it.

Also, if you think about it, all you're actually doing is saying "I think it's super-important that a pixel is deliberately called a pixel and nothing else - that makes it easier for me to understand what was meant" - instead, consider that a 'dot' can also be a pixel - there's nothing to say it can't be as it's just a (square) dot on your screen, so you can use the more generic term, but I agree you do lose the more clear description. Have we ever said that PPI is not right? No. Have we said that it doesn't hurt with comprehension? Yes, and I believe that's true.

  8.

You are joking right?! It's damn error AF. This is a fundamental error!

    As simple as possible:

PPI (point per inch) - we use when we talk about image resolution.

DPI (dot per inch) - we use when we talk about screen frequency.

LPI / LPC - (line per inch / centimeter per line) - usually these units we use when we refer to the screen frequency set on the RIP (Raster Image Processor)

Thanks for your simplified explanation, however I can assure you that nobody was in any doubt in the first instance. Can I ask how many users have been unable to understand what we were trying to convey? Can I also ask how many users would have instead been confused if we had mixed DPI and PPI (whichever was strictly correct in the UI at that time)? I think you'll find that actual people trying to use the software are not left confused by why it says DPI all the time, whereas they may have been confused if it sometimes said DPI then sometimes said PPI even though that may be more correct. My case in point was actually cited in the Apple documentation which was also incorrect but in no way was it ambiguous to a reader.

  9. I've reread this several times but can't figure out what it means (i is dumbs). I use a non-retina macbook to design in AD, and mirror @2/@3 png's to retina devices for previews. Will this "controversial change" affect me?

    Many thanks :)

Depends on exactly what you mean by "mirror to retina devices" - if Affinity is drawing its view on one of these devices (screens?) then yes, but if it's another application that you're viewing them in, then you'll see no difference.

Basically we used to draw pixel documents as though they were points - a 100x100 pixel document used to take up 100x100 points on your display (which is what you'd get if you put it on a website) but now we put 1 pixel on each pixel of your display, so a retina display will now show images half the size it used to - as per Photoshop.

  10. Update from my son: Seems they went down very well with a 4 year old - he actually asked for them to be read again straight afterwards! (and he asked for a banana too, haha!) He found the tomato-head monkey hilarious and enjoyed saying Giraffe's catchphrase "Ohhh, My Strawberry Monkey" :)

So to be perfectly honest, he got a lot more out of them than quite a few of the books that he already has - and those ones have obviously already been published, so fingers crossed for MSM signing a deal! :D

  11. After the product was released, the Beta is now a customer beta - which means you need to be a customer in order to try its new features and fixes. There is no way to Trial the Windows version at present as the team are still creating a Trial version... If you purchase the product and don't like it, I believe there are instructions on how to get your money back - maybe that's worth a go?
