  1. Hi cambshiregordon,

With respect to whether AP-edited images would be allowed in a photography competition, that's totally down to the terms of the specific competition... I submitted edited photos to a camera club and won, but the club were happy for their members to 'enhance' their photos however they saw fit - it was the end result that mattered in that club - whereas other clubs may have a strict 'as shot' policy.

There are often tell-tales in any manipulated image - often the absence of noise or indeed noise being too regular, other artefacts seen around compositing/blending with non-linear gamma, things like that... but most of them can be minimised to the point where it's very hard to tell... but if someone was desperate to tell, they probably could...

    Thanks,

    Matt

  2. I am not sure I see the difference with light UI. I have beta 1 and beta 2 side by side and it looks about the same.

It's obviously supposed to be a subtle difference, but if you zoom in and look at each area, you'll see it's neater, more precise and more polished - I've been trying it myself this evening and I'm really happy with it (although I'm on a retina screen, so I'd need to give it a whirl on a non-retina to see if there's more to do...)

  3. Hi Hokusai!

Definitely don't give up on the hopes for a hide/show all command - I'm still planning to add it but I just need to finish a few other bits first...

The palettes aren't document-aware, they're just built-in collections, so the 'Greys' you see are just a collection of RGB greys... I can see if there's something we could do about that to make it a little smarter, but it's just that everyone was busy fixing stuff so they've not had time to address improvements like that yet - but we will :)

    Thanks again,

    Matt

  4. Hello!

When you purchase any software from the Mac App Store, it is yours to install on the other machines you own (or later purchase). When you get your new machine, login to the App Store on the new Mac with your normal iTunes account username and password and just go to the 'Purchased' tab on the App Store - Affinity will be in there and you just click 'Install' to install it - it works really nicely :)

    Thanks,

    Matt

  5. EDIT: I have updated the beta to version 1.6 Beta 2.1 - it's exactly the same as the last build apart from some fixes for High Sierra and Metal. If you weren't using High Sierra or Metal, there is no difference, so don't feel compelled to download it again!...

    Status: Beta Release

    Purpose: New features, fixes

    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer

    Mac App Store: Not Submitted

    Download: Here

This beta version represents a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

    Fixes/Improvements:

    • Light UI improvements
    • Metal accelerated view (available in Sierra or High Sierra - defaulted 'on' for High Sierra) and hardware grid *
    • Artboards are created pixel-aligned
    • Images are pasted pixel-aligned
    • Items are copied to the same relative position between artboards
    • Fixed guide/margin visibility
    • Fixed Select-all (pixels) on artboard documents
    • Numerous bug fixes and other improvements

    * please note that macOS Sierra has a bug in Metal with AMD graphics cards which means colour correction will not function perfectly, hence why it is disabled by default. If you have an Intel or Nvidia card then feel free to try it. This bug was fixed in High Sierra so all cards should work as expected :)

  6. Take a look at the 'Acknowledgements' in Vectornator - it's actually built from Inkpad...

I agree about Inkpad - I always thought it was the best vector app on the iPad, but it obviously needed more development time.

Designer will make a big splash in comparison: It's a full application with professional features and it's FAST in comparison - but they have an advantage: They're available to buy right now - we're not, so fair play to them. Releasing software worth buying is hard, so they deserve a round of applause for that for starters :)

  7. I'm enjoying the beta version. Not all fonts seem to be recognized, as files from earlier versions of Affinity are reverting to standard fonts. Redoura Serif OTF is one example. Any logic to why certain fonts would not be compatible?

Hmm, that's very odd... certainly not the intention as far as I can imagine? Is there any chance you could send us one of these fonts to support@seriflabs.com so we can investigate it? Thank you! :)

  8. I'm glad you were able to find the problem :)  It's a shame you didn't mention you'd used clarity though or I could've just told you that there's a known side-effect of clarity which is slight 'halo' or 'ringing' effect in certain images - yours shows it particularly badly... Either way, I'm glad you're able to use the application now, and we're already looking into the clarity issue :)

    Thanks!

    Matt

  9. @revo

Ha! Well, I'm happy for you and your very large purchase and wish you many happy hours of pixel-painting onto/away from your vectors. (oh wait, is that not possible?!?! Well however do you use that piece of software!?!?... you see my point?...) To think that Designer is 'rinky-dinky' because it doesn't have a feature you need is absurd. Have you seen the artwork produced in Designer - even without this oh-so-fundamental tool?

The important thing to remember is simply that everyone is different and we don't all need the same things. We said we'd add it, we will.. but when we get to it. We've added lots of other things so far and they were added to enable use-cases that otherwise wouldn't be possible. We've also recently released the iPad iOS application - so it's hardly like we've been sitting on our hands whilst congratulating ourselves...

I'm sorry that it doesn't offer you the tool you want right now, but it will. Until that point, just try to have some objectivity - or at least a little less negativity?

Hope this post comes across in the manner in which it was intended - I appreciate it's important to you and you're frustrated at waiting, but name-calling and disparaging are not the way to achieve anything without first looking at the bigger picture...

    Thanks,

    Matt

  10. With regards to Hand Off... it works just fine, but it's alarmingly slow for large files because it actually currently only works via bluetooth. Apple originally said the feature worked via bluetooth and wifi but they never made the wifi part work because nobody ever transferred anything sizeable. They said they'll get this sorted and as soon as they do, we'll enable it. The experience at the moment is sometimes very painful over bluetooth... :/

  11. @RHiNO,

You can limit the scope of any adjustment by putting it inside the container - i.e. you asked how to limit it to the group you wanted to affect? The answer is just to drag that adjustment inside the group :)

We already do a 'snap back to the last zoom level if the user hasn't zoomed very much' that's hopefully barely noticeable, so 'snap back to last rotation' would be no problem.

With regards to the file management side of things, I totally agree we have work to do here - it's not as smooth as it should be - we'll obviously try our best to get this sorted out quickly.

    Thanks again to all,

    Matt

  12. Hi RHiNO,

Thanks for your comments and feedback - much appreciated! :)

I'll try to quickly answer some of your questions:

Canvas rotation via rotation gesture seemed to happen too frequently and it's quite annoying so we made it only possible in the canvas rotate tool... There's no reason we couldn't enable an option that would let you have it in all tools though... :)

"Pencil input only" sounds like a reasonable request - we're still getting a lot of this stuff nailed down so we can add that one to the list, thanks.

    Pixel eraser is also sensible!

Paolo (who makes the DAUB brushes) was in the office with us a couple of weeks ago and he was using 7GB of his custom brushes - so yes, they work great, but we need to add an importer so you can easily get them into the application. This will get done soon.

The gestures would fight with the current ability to paint/move/whatever - but if we added your 'pencil input only' option then there would be no fighting, so yes, we could enable custom gesture recognition to trigger tools or actions...

It wouldn't be totally trivial to add custom scaling for the context bar at the bottom, but it's definitely possible. We're still playing with these things anyway at the moment, so I'd expect this area to evolve over time anyhow...

The navigator will be improved to add 'View points' (customisable view setups that store view centre and zoom level) to help you easily navigate around the document. I'm not totally sure about panning the view around with your finger in the navigator though - perhaps it would work for the pencil, but your finger is often a bit too clumsy to do anything meaningful in that amount of space, I found...

Not too sure about fonts personally, but I was under the impression that you could already install fonts from iCloud Drive? Perhaps not?

Yes, I'd also like to have a persistent tool state between application runs, and we're already doing this for the desktop products, so I'm sure this will also be enabled on iPad

Thanks once again - hope you enjoy using it! I'm sure we'll make it so much better over time :)

    Matt
