Bounding boxes and selections and path handling
MattP replied to Matthias's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
Yes, I noticed Art Text is incorrect too - I think it's probably something I've messed up, so we'll fix it :) It's only Art Text that's broken though, and all other objects act as they should (to the best of my knowledge) -
double clicking gradient handles

I always use the on-document UI, not the flyouts - but each to their own :) -
...okay, that sounds odd... I'll try some tests with jpegs later :)

Hi Sandy, Welcome to the forums :) Glad you're enjoying Affinity Designer so far! I'd invite you to take a look back through some of the topics over the last month to see how we take criticism... the product you're using right now wouldn't be as good as it is without us listening to suggestions, criticism and implementing changes based on real world users with their experience. Also, we have a plan for getting support from the industry... trust me, this is just the beginning... :) Let us know how you get on with the software, Matt

Better color selection within the UI
MattP replied to Dams's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
Hi Dams, The current beta that you have should be showing you swatches from any colour drop down - like the ones in the effects page. Is this not working for you? I click the little colour button, it opens a flyout and I choose 'swatches' from the drop down list and I can use my swatches. It remembers next time what I was looking at in the flyout and shows me swatches again next time... I think we said a while ago that we're going to make it a keyboard modifier to apply your colour after choosing it with the colour picker. We used to have it doing this all the time but it was very frustrating to us as it's not how we work (and we used to have a version that applied it to the selection during the drag as you went over each new colour - which looked crazy) but we can understand that everyone works differently so a modifier would sort that out. Not sure what you mean by 'like the UI is showing a random tab instead of the last used one' - if you can either grab a movie of it going wrong (just use QuickTime and tell it to record the screen and upload the .mov here) or write a simple recipe here for us to follow then I'm certain it can be fixed. I've not seen it doing anything odd for me though :( Thanks, Matt -
horizontal/vertical node buttons

Great video, Miguel! :) ...and, rui_mac, you beat me to it by a few minutes - I was just about to say 'use the transform tab!' ;) (glad you found that, incidentally)- 18 replies

I'll just go straight in and say that our rendering engine, document model, memory management, threading and the fact that we have written this stuff from the ground up to be scalable in terms of document complexity is the reason that we're so 'snappy' - we've written the core of our application with massive attention to detail and obsessed over it for years - and this was all written by our small team. We do use Cocoa, you are quite right (and probably some CoreImage functions too) - but this is only 'skin deep' as you put it - literally - as these technologies are only used in the presentation layer that you see as the application UI on top. I don't know if that disappoints you, or excites you - I can't tell what you were suggesting in your post - but I wasn't going to leave it alone because writing this technology has been a large part of my life (and that of the whole team) for such a long time... Hey, that's looking amazing! :D I really like the hairy texture you've given him/her/it! ;) I think that what you're seeing is just jpeg artefact-ing, not pixelation... Try choosing a higher jpeg quality - or just output as png :) Hmmm, I think that the balloon just needs some more definition - more contrast to the highlight and shadow areas? I'd be tempted to see what it would look like with an outline too - but that might be too much? Anyway - it's awesome! Well done!!! :) Matt

That's a brilliant drawing! Well done! :D

There's no reason why not - dare I ask what you're drawing in picas? (fonts?) Would you need ciceros too? Thanks, Matt

Hi Bruce, Welcome to the forums! :) What you're noticing with the selection 'balloon' is a bug that has been fixed for the next beta and it now shows in the document units - hopefully we'll release the new beta in the next few hours :) Also, if you go to 'Affinity Designer'->'Preferences...' you can see some options on the 'User Interface' tab and you might like to try out the 'Lines in Points' option: Disabling this will make your line weights show in document units too, but many people just like their lines to always be expressed in points - even when working in pixels/whatever, so this is why it defaults to the other state. Thanks, Matt

Hi, At the moment, we should be copying text (if you had some text selected) to the clipboard and a rasterised version of the selection in all other cases. I'd imagine that we'll have more in the future (i.e. copying the selection as SVG text onto the clipboard is entirely achievable, as is copying the style as CSS, or even code to create the selected objects in CoreGraphics, for example - although that's harder for us than other apps because we don't render our document via CoreGraphics and hence we get different visual effects and have greater capabilities) Are you testing this while Designer is still running? If you haven't closed it down, then I would expect this to work? (closing Designer loses its clipboard data at present) Cheers, Matt

Hi thomaso, I'm genuinely really sorry if I've upset you in any way - it's certainly not my intention at all and both myself and Andy were just trying to help :) If any confusion has come about because of the beta email mentioning the 'Select tool' then that is completely my fault and I apologise - it was our name for the 'Move Tool' for the last few years before we changed to call it the 'Move Tool' just before beta and I've obviously made a mistake and referred to it as the Select tool in the beta update email the other week. Again, I'm very sorry for any confusion or upset, I certainly didn't mean to! :) Matt

Hi Hilary, Select your red lines and then go to the Line page - now click 'Properties' and change the 'Size jitter' to be a higher value - this will allow the pressure variance to have more effect on the width of the line :) Nice drawing, incidentally - I like the snowy mountains! :) Hope that helps, Matt

Incredible service, Miguel - thank you! :) :D

Hi echslectir, welcome to the forums! We've had a few threads about this previously (I think it was referred to as 'power duplicate') and we fully intend to do it - just give us a chance and it'll appear soon :) Thanks, Matt
