  1. If you want to open a pdf file there is a preferences dialogue that opens underneath the modal file dialogue as soon as I select a pdf file.. I can't move the file window anymore and so I can't click on the other window underneath. Check mate ;) At least I can close the file dialogue with the ESC key.

I can choose open, move the window in one corner and then select a pdf. Then it's possible to click ok on the preferences window.

The actual pdf import is much improved besides that, thanks.

I've had this problem happen to me too! I think we'll have it resolved soon - sorry!

  2. Rest assured, we are reading all the posts, we are taking on board everything that is being said and we do care an awful lot about how you feel about the program and about the direction we're going in.

We've tried to be very honest and upfront at all times about what's coming - the only thing that we can't do is put set dates on things because as soon as we start saying 'before Christmas' for features (for example) then it starts down a road of problems:

    - If the feature is definitely not going to be ready, then the user gets let down and feels disappointed that their expectations were not met, especially if they see some other feature they felt wasn't as important getting finished.

    - If the feature is nearly ready but not quite then the developer feels under pressure to release within the time frame given and then we get a suboptimal version of the feature or tool, which is not what we want to release to you, and is not what you wanted to receive either!

We've got so many ideas in addition to those on the roadmap document and all of them will come over time - and we'll be trying to make them all reality as fast as we can :)  As Miguel correctly says, some features actually rely on others, some require one piece of technology to be in and working before work can start on them. Sometimes you may be surprised about the order that features appear in, but there's usually a very good reason behind them - and it's not that we've picked some crazy order, it's just that they were dependent on each other. For example, in order to get multiple pages/artboards to draw on screen we need to do many things, but one of them is that I need to make some changes to the OpenGL presentation layer that gets the rendered document image to appear on the screen and in doing so, I will end up with a working canvas rotation feature as a by-product. You may well find therefore that canvas rotation will appear in a beta version before artboards appear, but that doesn't mean we prioritised it - it's that the order of things is not always as clear as it may seem. My personal list of things I'd like to see next is: Corner Tool, Artboards, Symbols, Distances and Snapping improvements, SVG slice export, Mesh Fills... so yes, they're very high on my own list...

    Thanks,

    Matt

  3. I think you've hit the nail on the head in that some of your 'deja vu' with the user experience is actually a necessity based on our ambitions :) If you only intend to focus on one use-case, you can do it in a focused way, but if you start out with the ambition to be a tool for all creative needs, then focusing a user-experience on one task or workflow will only harm anyone trying to use it for other purposes.

I definitely appreciate you taking time to respond and it's valuable information about the way we may be being perceived by fresh eyes...

Incidentally, if you are running the trial or Mac App Store versions of Affinity Designer on OS X Yosemite, there is a Yosemite bug that affects lots of applications and causes our apparent intermittent slowness. We realised what it was and worked around this OS bug so our beta versions should not exhibit this behaviour if you wanted to give it a try? Basically, whenever you click in our layers panel, brush panel or history panel the application will respond slowly to zoom gestures (and perhaps some other random things!) until you click away from the application and then click back to it. As I said though, we have found a way to work around this which is available in the latest beta version while Apple resolves their issue.

Thanks again, hope you have a great festive season,

    Matt

  4. Hi Paolo,

Yes, I was working at Gaddesden Place from 2000 until 2002 when I left and joined Serif. Oooh, interesting that you were part of the TopModel 3D story - I think I was getting out of Acorn before your products came around so I've never seen them, sorry :(  I found an old Acorn User article that seemed incredibly positive about it! :)

I have my old Acorn A3020 at the side of my desk here at work (just checked to make sure it's still there!) and it still has the old MattDraw v1.0 disk (from 1994) sticking out the side of it - but sadly the machine seems to be dead, all I get is a vague green power light and nothing else happens when I try to turn it on. It may be about to take a trip to the electrical recycling centre, poor thing... :(

I think we need to see first where our journey leads us, but obviously keep in mind technology like the TRUISM 2 engine to make sure we aren't missing a trick. Thanks for the journey down memory lane! Hope you have a good festive season,

    Matt

  5. Well, it's interesting you say that... the application is capable of writing everything you did to file in such a way that I could play and rewind every step you took - but it's to be used when we transfer documents between Photo/Designer/Publisher so we have a nice undo history - it's not available as a user-initiated save option at this point... it may be in future, I suppose...

At least if you're reasonably confident there weren't any document setup changes then that'll help me track it down - thanks! :)

    Matt

  6. Hi primeconcept,

I've not heard of this package before - I think by the time this was released I was developing on PCs at Xara, having moved on from my Acorn Archimedes I had while at school, years before then (wowser, I sound old!!!) but it's obviously interesting what they were trying to do... Also interesting is the fact that even with this technology, I've never heard of them - and I'm in the industry! :S  Were there any other specific things that you were inspired by other than their "TRUISM 2" ink simulation engine? Tool/Feature-wise? I would expect that by the time we release Affinity Publisher we will have more advanced control of output colour management than we currently have - and this would obviously propagate across to Designer, too.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  7. Sorry this got missed - I do try my best to read most things, but occasionally I miss things. If I check the forums on my phone then it says I have read things when I come back into work and check on my computer so I occasionally forget to reply to things as there are a lot of posts, sorry :(

If I replace your objects by drawing over the top of them, selection works as expected. Has this document been resized in some way, or have the objects in the document been rescaled afterwards somehow - perhaps in a group that was then ungrouped? I'm sure we can fix this, but I think it is all down to how this document was created that has caused this problem, so would be enlightening...

    Thanks,

    Matt
