You can use the Mac native app called Automator to watch your folder and open files into your program.

I got on a sign cutting forum the other day were people were talking about Windows 7, Adobe, and their cutting software.  Most everyone agreed that they did not want to upgrade to Windows 10 because they are finally happy with how seldom there software crashes under Windows 7.  There computers were only crashing a few times a day now.  LOL.    I can't believe anyone would be happy with that.   I for one am extremely happy that Affinity Designer is Mac only.

I feel that your decision to go Mac only is spot on.  It's funny how so many people want all that Affinity has to offer on their PC.  If they only realized the limitations of their choice of operating systems, they would understand why this is Mac only in the first place.
If you want the benefits that a Bugatti has to offer, you don't buy a Ford Fusion and get mad that Bugatti doesn't make an engine for your Ford.  I use Windoze, Linux and OS X operating systems.  They all offer one benefit over the other in certain areas.  Serif made their choice and decided to capitalize on all the features that it's chosen operating system has to offer.  Was it to fill a niche or to capitalize on the the OS's benefits and abilities?  Obviously that question has already been answered.  They have designed a super responsive program that will be(and apparently is) the envy of the competition.

Keep up the great work Serif and if you as a user really want the benefits of the Affinity product line, get a Mac and be happy.

Nice work guys, the new icons are MUCH better from a graphic design perspective. I'm not a fan of icons that are illustrative or literal representations. As an artist and designer, I appreciate a certain level of abstraction. Of course it will also fit in much better with Yosemite and it's "flat" UI — a term which I think is actually misnomer; the changes are actually about moving away from skeuomorphic or representational design. I like the use of gradients, which I don't believe date anything inherently, as gradients or subtle color shifts are necessary to add some detail and depth to the icons and the color palette.

I think out of the 3 icons, the APhoto icon is the strongest; the use of the aperture (although "representational" is really nice and still carries the abstract, geometric language of the other two icons. However, I would consider making the center of the aperture dark like the outer triangular border of the icon. The Publisher icon is also great; it suggest to me the concept of "series," or "multiples" via the repeating diagonal shapes on the right of the icon's inner triangle. It's an abstraction of a stack of papers, the multiple pages in a document, etc. I also like the Designer icon. I like the smaller triangles inside and seeing the smaller, inner triangles creating a larger one suggests to me a certain level of "design thought-process" and construction / assembly techniques. However, I think it needs more detail, perhaps more bifurcation within the triangles...

Overall it's a great direction and I think it modernizes the apps tremendously. The previous icons were very clichéd in their literalness and representation quality. Great job again!

Signguy reacted to Hokusai in Non-destructive boolean operations by default
To be honest, I like the destructive boolean operations as the default because that is the expected behavior in vector apps. Don't get me wrong, I think that non-destructive boolean operations are great but like MEB said both are useful in different contexts and to me the expected behavior is destructive operations. I can also understand Dave's reasoning too though and so a preference setting like MEB suggested would probably be best as it would allow the user to decide which they prefer.

Signguy reacted to Ben in compared to Bloom
After trying out Bloom for just a few minutes, I'd already say the following:

    - Affinity runs much, much faster.  In fact, I'd say our debug test build even appears to run faster given a side by side comparison with a single image layer and a few vector shapes.

    - Our PSD import/export is way more featured and accurate than Bloom's "best-in-class" PSD handling. We have a whole bunch of tests that Bloom just does not handle.

    - Our Pen and Node tools are a lot more user friendly and powerful (and a lot less buggy).

    - I'd say in a normal working scenario, Affinity is a lot more stable (Bloom has crashed on me five times in just a few minutes light use), and is less prone to odd tool behaviour.

But, that's just my opinion - I'll let you guys decide which is the hands-down better app.

Ok, now I feel better.   :)

I agree with you ronnyb on this one.  It's difficult to know if you have already converted editable text to curves or not and the view doesn't help to make that determination.  I always have to save my document as editable text before I convert to curves so that way the next time I need to change something, I can easily do it without having to remember the point size and font name.  Or, I have to duplicate all my text fields and hide them before converting to curves so I at least have something that I can edit the next time.

I'm having same issue as well.  I do not have any of the Beta's installed.   Deleted MAS Version and reinstalled.  Still no thumbnail previews.  :(

Edit:  I installed the latest Beta and thumbnail previews work now.  Guess I will need to keep both on my system until the MAS version is updated down the road.  I've discovered that this can happen when you install some of the betas and then remove them.

It's all good though because the Betas are just too irresistible and it's hard to not want to play around with the new features.  :D

Edit X2:  If you feel courageous enough you can also try to rebuild the LaunchServices Database on OS X.  If your like me and you install the Betas and then delete them, this kind of thing can happen.
Open Terminal and type the following:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

This worked for me after I deleted the beta.

Alt is used as a temporary override for any snapping.  It applies for tools that do other sorts of snapping, such as snapping to key values when moving a Shape parameter, or the midpoint between two points when editing a gradient.

We have kept this as a global convention.  I also wouldn't use double tapping a modifier key for anything.  It could easily become frustrating.

Don't panic Signguy - I think it just wasn't clear from the way it was written but the request was for Cmd AND ` to toggle tabs when the user isn't in a separated (windowed) mode but has multiple tabs available.

There are no plans to change the Cmd AND + or Cmd AND - shortcuts as that would make me very grumpy - and nobody wants that ;)

command + is zoom in and command - is zoom out.  Always has been when using any Mac app.  I wouldn't want this behavior to change.  Why change the default Mac behavior?  If someone is used to the way Illustrator works then use illustrator!  I would want the Affinity UI to match the default UI behavior to keep things in sync.

-1 vote to switch between documents using command +.  Control tab works just fine in either windowed or full screen mode.  Don't complicate things just for the benefit of the AI users out there.

Signguy got a reaction from My Strawberry Monkey in Help. How do I create this in Affinity?
Sounds like you are going to want to create a document with a transparent background and then learn how to create a compound object.  You will want the shapes to be subtracted from the compound.  There is a good video here that will explain how to do it.  You can then export that as a PNG file and the overlay will do what you want.  It's real easy once you do it and I use this ALL the time.

Signguy reacted to Hammer6 in Export selected object(s) as vector (SVG)
The export persona only exports to raster (bitmap) files, not vector of any kind (to include SVG). I'm using Silhouette Studio Designer with a Silhouette Portrait cutter. Today is my first day starting to sort this out. I ended up taking the objects I wanted to cut and placing them in a new file. Then did a combine to eliminate interior lines (tried without doing that and the Silhouette software cut all lines, essentially segmenting my piece.

With the new SVG eliminating the interior lines, the Portrait cut out my object from card stock (for practice). I think it's only 80 lb so thee was some fuzzing at the cut. Once I sorted out the cut depth, things are looking pretty good. Tomorrow I'm going to do some vinyl cuts.

In a perfect world, Affinity Designer will allow me to select an object or objects and export them to an SVG file which with a page size that is only big enough to hold the exported object(s). I'd also like to see some kind of "print selected" functionality that would only send the selected object to print.
