    Dear friends,
As you can see I'm a long time user of Serif products.
When the Affinity line I jumped right in, and now I've upgraded to the universal license for V2.  I'm very happy with the decision and actively engage in proselytism about the products.
I mainly work in Linux, only booting into Windows when absolutely necessary. Stopping my work to boot into Windows is a nuisance, and Affinity is one of the few reasons.
Linux for the desktop is very mature, and more often than not, much better and enjoyable than working in windows.
Linux is steadily growing in number of users, and many segments are rising very rapidly, for example, gaming, which is turbocharging Llinux adoption.
I have often read that Linux is still a minor player in the desktop space, but that may be misleading, and often due to a lack of serious software such as Affinity. Many people are in the same predicament as I am. We are both counted in the Windows and Linux statistics.
Many of us have turned to Inkscape, Gimp and Scribus for our needs, but really need professional level tools, with a degree of polish that often commercial software provides.
Part of the lower usage rate is due to the lack of this type of software, which leaves people like me having to dual boot to use your software.
I believe that not having the option to natively install the software is keeping a higher number of user from adopting Affinity. Valve is a prime example of the success of the adoption of linux as a prime OS.
There is also the fact that  releasing for Linux would make Affinity the ONLY commercial player in the market, and could really give it an edge over Adobe, greatly enhancing the adoption of Affinity.
I would like to request you consider the porting (does having a Mac version make it any easier?), especially now that Flatpak and Snaps exist, and removes the problem of distro fragmentation, or maybe in the mean time contribute and support the Wine effort?
Thank you for offering such a great product, in the traditional non-subscription model, and providing such outstanding value, as always.
    Cheers,
    a long time user.
    Juan.

I've been trying for quite some time to make Affinity apps run on Linux, without much success.
As promissing as all the suggestions I've found were, eventually they all ended up as failures.
Then a couple of days ago, for whatever reason, I came up with the idea to simply copy the entire Affinity installation folder from my Windows machine to a CrossOver installation on my Linux Mint machine.
Lo and behold, to my absolute surprise, both apps were able to not just start, but also properly activate and run without any issues whatsoever.
If anyone is interested, both Designer and Photo are version 1.10.6, running on CrossOver for Linux v23.6, which again runs Wine v8.0.1 in the background along with the preinstalled .NET Framework 4.7.2 inside a CrossOver bottle.
    My question is simple.
Am I allowed to run and use Affinity apps like this?
Affinity doesn't install on CrossOver at all because of the cursed .NET Framework 3.5 but apparently it works fine when the Windows installations are just copied inside CrossOver.
EDIT: I understand that this section is intended for Windows and MacOS but I really didn't know where else to post my question.

gnx reacted to GrnDrm in Best (easiest) way to run Affinity Photo on Linux?
I would like to register my wish for a Linux version of Affinity Photo (and eventually the full suite). I no longer consider Windows a viable platform and have switched to Linux Mint as my daily OS. I refuse to rebuild or replace a perfectly capable PC to accommodate Microsoft's decision to require certain hardware. Plus, Microsoft has become increasingly invasive. The move away from large corporate-based compute is growing in momentum as more people find the allure of Linux and its open-source, ad-free nature.
That said, I will continue to support companies that provide quality software products and Affinity / Serif is definitely in that category. I have turned a lot of people on to the Affinity suite and will continue to do so, especially if a Linux version becomes available. I'm not making any demands, but just stating my heartfelt desire to run native versions of my favorite software in my favorite OS. I do not regret purchasing both iterations of the Affinity suite though I am now much less likely to use them on a regular basis.
Thanks for making such great products. I respectfully hope your plans change to include versions for the Linux OS.
    Have a wonderful day!

kinda (really) mad that Serif isn't helping us much with running their softs on wine, like a lot of information about dependencies etc would help up so much.
I get the fact that they need to make a full version if they ever want to make it, and market it as linux compatible, and i assume that's why they aren't helping us at all.
I would also assume that they heard about linux users being 80+% of issues report when/if a company release a linux version of their soft.

But i also believe that there is a middle ground between the two and that they really should stop impeding help us, by giving us some helpful informations to make it run; or to make a wine fork for it if it really is necessary (so devs wouldn't have to retro engineer everything)

I know Serif doesn't owe it to us since it was never talked about anywhere (kinda mad about the "all platforms" v2 announcement hyperbole tho), but as it is with anything regarding Open-Source, it all comes down to morals.

    PS:
Thank you, genuinely, thank you to the few of you working on that.

If only the opposite scenario took place, I wonder how you would react then. Imagine if Affinity's software simply supported RTL by default but not LTR. I'm sure you will be the first person to whine about that.

It certainly doesn't have one today, and Serif have said they have no plans for a Linux version right now.

Would you say Adobe is a major software developer in the graphics and design field?
In the last years, did you see some attempt to make it work reliably on the Wine side?
Lately, since Affinity Photo 1.9, could not even be installed with Wine, I expect it to never be fixed or maybe too late to matter.
Give up your hopes and find alternatives or stick to Windows/MacOS!

Let's give this a try. Cast votes for the latest reported version. We only need 407 votes to be at the top of the list.

Okay, so Serif aren't keen on giving us a dedicated Linux version, but lets see if we can get it Wine compatible.
If you go here;  https://appdb.winehq.org/  and create a login, then you can vote on what apps you want Wine fixed to work with.
Once you're logged in, search for Affinity and if you go into either of those there should be a 'vote' button. You have three votes, and you can give multiple votes to the same app if you want.
The more votes we can give Affinity, the more likely it is to get fixed for Wine.

Graphic design is currently the main reason for my Windows partition. Inkscape/Gimp/Krita are pretty capable and good enough for many jobs, but Affinity running on Linux be amazing.

Exactly, it's a non-argument with a high degree of "duh", and literally no one thinks what you are saying and repeating. It's a textbook straw man, and it doesn't bring any value to this topic. You are giving the impression of refuting an argument, whereas the proper idea of argument under discussion was not addressed.
Most people here ask for a Linux version. Others even plead for a Linux version. Some argue that a Linux version would be a good economic decision, and part of them indicate that they would be willing to pre-pay, crowdfund, or even pay double or more.
No one actually believes Serif owes them anything. That includes you. They don't owe you(r preferred OS) their undivided attention. So let's keep this topic a place where people can join to indicate their shared wish for a Linux version in order to show Serif that there is actually a desire for this. A place where we can discuss possible deployment platforms and distro support.

Hi, I bought Affinity Publisher in September and just get my new computer. I only run Linux Ubuntu 20.04 on it.
Is there at least a tutorial to use it with a virtual machine such as Wine in order to use the product ? Thanks

I'd take it however they wanted to do it honestly.
Steam/proton is a decent enough platform, and, I'm more than willing to jump through any hoops that they decide are necessary (likely for anti-piracy reasons).
