pbass got a reaction from Barnabas Thomas in Copy a Node/Segment, or a Selection of Them
Love to be able to copy single nodes, line segments, or a selection of nodes – including the exact geometry of any curve handles – and then paste it/them into the front node an open curve.
With the option of pasting its mirror version – vertical, horizontal, or both.
It is very hard to manually make a curve exactly match another one.
Repeatability is crucial for precise work.
Snapping control handles (when they arrive) will sure help, but copy/paste of any of a curve's (or shape's) selected bits would be supremo!
You can easily copy an entire curve/shape, but not parts of one.
You can do the former, delete what you don't need, and then attach the bits you need; but that's a long way round.
I apologize if you've heard any or all of this before (and please correct me if any of this is already possible).
Oh, and as Sven Kalkschmidt already suggested, the functionality of the following Illustrator plugin looks amazingly useful:

Thanks for your attention, and keep up the awesome programming, Serif/Affinity!

pbass got a reaction from keiichi77 in Convert Nodes: Shortcuts (Designer)
[Designer]
Hi,
Is there another way to convert nodes, other than going to the Pen or Node Tool's Contextual (horizontal) Toolbar, and pressing buttons? Like, shortcuts for:
Convert to Sharp or Smooth node? Or Reverse Curve?
I already have keyboard shortcuts for Close and Break Curve – whose toolbar buttons are right beside the Convert ones. But those are the only Pen or Node Tool shortcuts I could find in the Prefs.
Two related things I would love:
- A way to 'pull' Control Handles out of a sharp node (or pop them back in to make a sharp point),
via some modifier key(s) with the node tool. (Like: after-the-fact editing of a path, not while drawing it.)
and
- When you're manipulating one of a node's Control Handles,
for a certain modifier key(s) to cause its opposing handle do the exact same thing – i.e., stay in perfect symmetry/mirror image. Including, on a non-smooth node, the control handle angle.
That would be _so_ handy! (It's available with 3rd party Illustrator plugins)
Thanks for your attention!

pbass got a reaction from thedivclass in Designer: K.B. Shortcut to Increase/Decrease Stroke Width
Ok, I just stumbled on the already-existing shortcut:
Control-Option-Drag to change stroke or pixel-width with Pencil or Brush.
Is there any reason that same shortcut couldn't also be implemented for Pen tool stroke width?
Or for the stroke width of a selected path, when the Node tool is active?
Thanks.

pbass got a reaction from paulrobinson68 in Closed Curves With Vector Brush – Gap?
Hi,
Say I stroke a closed shape with a Vector Brush (in Designer).
There is always a gap at the terminal point.
Say you don't want the gap. No matter how you edit the brush's Properties
– including Head or Tail Offset, Overlap, Pull, etc., –
there's always a gap at the closing node.
Is there a trick I don't know? (Besides opening the curve and tugging the end nodes for visual stroke overlap.)
Wouldn't visual vector-brush stroke closure be a desirable feature for some/many purposes?
¿Could this option be designed into Brush Properties, in a later A.D. update?
thanks in advance,

pbass got a reaction from Aammppaa in Designer (vector) Pencil Tool: Continue Path
P.S.: One good reason to want the paths to continue — rather than just contiguous, is:
If you use a pressure contour for a natural taper at the ends, you only want it to taper at the place you consider your line to be finished – not necessarily where you first lifted your stylus.

Er, I think the Subject says it!
I'd love a Modifier-drag way to change any brush width – vector stroke, _or_ pixel size when in Pixel Persona.
But in the short term, I'd be happy if [ and ] grew and shrunk the stroke size – of the current pen/pencil/vector brush, if one of those are selected;
or of the selected curve, if the node tool's selected.
Thanks for considering this!

pbass got a reaction from RuralKat in Hide Outlines Command
This is the kind of answer that makes me so hopeful about this software and this company: You're receptive to requests, but you try to keep a sense of priorities. That's the way its gotta be, and that's what is going to give us a steadily improving, professionally useful design tool. Eventually it's going to be a world beater.
(I just hope and pray that you're making enough sales to pay the programmers until that day comes!)

pbass got a reaction from RuralKat in Hide Outlines Command
Hi there,
Would anybody else find it useful to have a key command to hide all vector outlines & nodes (& bounding boxes too) without deselecting the item, nor changing tools?
It's easier to judge your final result without the distraction of the "back-room mechanics" on top of your stroke.
I remember using that kind of Hide command back in Adobe days.
Just pressing Spacebar for a momentary Hand tool _almost_ does the trick.
But not if you're adjusting the item's stroke or brush or layer fx properties in a dialog – then Spacebar doesn't work. So you have to judge your adjustments with the nodes & outlines obscuring your edges (with Pen or Node tool selected, at least).
And if you switch to a different tool that hides outlines & bounding box, then your pen or node tool parameter ribbon goes away.
All these issues would be resolved with an additional View ->View Mode: Artwork/Result Only.
Thanks in advance for considering it!

pbass got a reaction from Aammppaa in Designer (vector) Pencil Tool: Continue Path
Hi there,
In Designer, when you've drawn a line (path) with the Pencil tool,
and lifted your stylus, the path is 'done', and the Pencil is ready to draw the next path.
¿What if you want to Continue that same path – rather than just adding another one at its end?
Pencil sketching is appealing because of its speed; it would no longer be any fun if you had to manually connect paths that you want to be a single one.
Is there a modifier key to do continue from the last node of an already drawn path? I couldn't find one.
If none exists, would this be a good feature for the Wish List?
thanks in advance,

You guys are well-oiled machine. Every time I forget about updates, one turns up – usually an excellent, meaty one, like this.
I hope you're proud of your team! There aren't many devs so creative and productive.
I'm really excited to see what you come up with as Designer for iPad!

pbass got a reaction from InnerPeace in iPad: See Layer in Isolation – like Option-Click
Hi,
In Photo for iPad, what is the equivalent of Option-Clicking a layer, to (in audio terms) 'Mute' all the other layers temporarily?
I.e., to visually isolate a layer's display.
Thanks in advance,

pbass got a reaction from anon1 in iPad: See Layer in Isolation – like Option-Click
Yes, some kind of icon on the Layers palette would be great.
Only a minority of graphics people keep a keyboard connected to their iPad – otherwise most of us would just use a laptop.

pbass got a reaction from anon1 in Brush vs. Pencil (Designer Draw Persona)
Ok, a lightbulb just went on!
I had thought that Pencil tool could start off with a 'Texture Line' Style (i.e., a vector brush); but
I realize now that when you select that kind of Stroke, it automatically goes back to pure vector line ('Solid Line' Style). I hadn't noticed that before.
You can change a Pencil line's Stroke to 'Texture Line', after the fact; but not while drawing. Got it.
The developers' choice of a double-sphere colour-picker for the vector Brush tool confused me – with no fill available, it can only have a stroke, right? (Even if the stroke is derived from bit-map image.)

pbass got a reaction from Aammppaa in Node & Control Handles – Distinguishability (in Designer)
Thanks Aammppaa!
I'm sure the Dev's are extremely busy; but there's usually someone reading our posts.
I'd love to know that _they_ know that some of us struggle with that particular node/handles clarity issue.
I notice that in Inkscape they use hollow diamond shapes for the control handles. [Edit: They're not diamonds after all, just pixelation playing tricks on my eyes. But diamonds'd be a good idea!]
I like that a lot; but for Af Designer handles, even just hollow (transparent/no fill) circles would be great – would be a fine contrast from Nodes. [Edit: Er, no, hollow circles could just be confused with unselected neighbouring nodes. So maybe a different colour for handles, or diamond shape or something.]
Cheers.

Hi,
[This is a repost of what I posted last week – somehow it missed the attention of Serif/Affinity folks. Thanks for reading!

Request for better visual contrast between Smooth Nodes and their Control Handles.
Blue Circles, all!
Because the Control Handles are only distinguishable by being a bit smaller, when you've selected a bunch of nodes, it can be a real visual challenge to sort them out.
It's not a big deal if you're mostly drawing straight lines.
But when you draw complex, organic shapes (like sketching in vectors with a stylus),
you get long lines full of nodes, and when you select them,
it looks like a string of blue Christmas lights!
Click attached JPG, 2 views of the same path: Top is with nodes unselected, Bottom is selected.)
The Control Handles make it look like 3 times as many nodes.
Personally I'd prefer if Control Handles were either
- a different colour than nodes, or
- a different shape, or
- both. (Or customizable in Prefs!)
Thanks,
- pbass
