Franklin reacted to CreationsOfKoon in AD experiment - Photo manipulation with vector software?! Absolutely.
    Hello everyone,

like I posted in my previous topic, I really appreciate the pixel-view in Affinity Designer and wanted to explore the Pixel Persona a bit more. I wanted to experiment a bit and see how far I could push it. I really enjoy automotive design and well.. pretty much everything about cars, so I thought I'd do a bit of a virtual tuning thing with the Pixel Persona and see how it goes. I looked through the tools and messed around for a while before I set off with the project, and pretty much figured, that AD has all the basic tools needed for photo manipulation, aside of it's powerful set of vector tools. I drive a '98 Nissan Micra K11 preface, so I thought I'd give that model a bit of a touch up. Now please bare in mind, that the last time I gave a car the "photoshop-chop" treatment was probably about 10 years ago, so I'm a bit rusty in that regard, but I am really happy with the final result:

The full resolution is 1080p, just click on the picture to view it. Here's the original image:

So do I think Affinity Designer is not only a great vector software, but also a killer photo manipulation software? Absolutely. Obviously something like a mesh-distortion tool would make the process much easier and will open up a lot more possibilities, but even as it currently is, you can still manipulate the software and cleverly use it's functionality to do some complex pixel work.

As in my previous project, I recorded the entire process, but I have to edit the video first. I wanted to share with you my result, so I'll post the video as a comment, when it's ready (I'll get right on it).

    Thanks for having a look!

Always wanted to try a bit of underwater baby photography but none of my cameras are waterproof.

So rather than invest in a lot more expensive equipment I had an idea to nip round to a mate's house and use his tropical fish tank.

This is one of the test shots.

Really need to find a way to clean the inside of the glass before the next session.

    Introduction.
Since some 10 days, I'm going around (not fast nor far!) with
a set of crutches after a severe fall in an icy outdoor stairway
that twisted my left ankle. —"That 's a good one"… said the
surgeon, "No need to operate though that will nail or slow you
down for some time, I'm afraid!"

Yesterday, I couldn't stand it anymore. I asked a friend to
help me put the wildlife gear in the car and drive me to
the marsh for a couple of hours.

Do you remember this girl (young female Mandarin duck) who grabbed
my heart in the middle of December?

Though I was hooked in a rather platonic affair, she broke my heart… but
I'm happy for her… I had the feeling that this romance had no future.

    Followed in the next post…

    Hi,

My next personal challenge (to learn AD) was to recreate a sports car. The Lamborghini Aventador is just so beautiful, so it had to be that one!

All work is done in Draw Persona, no images added or "pixels" used.
Really miss possibility to curve the gradient line, but I think I managed to find ways around it, where I needed soft surfaces :-) .
Used a couple of images as reference.

    Hope you all like it.

Amazing things can be done with AD, I just love it more and more. Having so much fun, just creating, not having the software being a limiting factor!

I'm impressed by your opened attitude!

I'm also impressed by instructors omitting to
mention the great importance and limitations
    of CMYK.

As most my work (65%) is directed towards
publishing/printing, the ins and outs of CMYK
are an integer part of my workflow.

A 4 rotating cylinder machine that prints 4 colours successively and very quickly!

Maybe. In my office, I do have a colour jet printer for CMYK. But I think the printer dri-
ver converts the RGB files on the fly prior
    to printing.

The CMYK style is for printing greater quantities of copies
in the shortest time… like books, magazines, flyers etc.

Jet printers do a better job at printing when in 4 colour
separation. Don't forget that this implies a substrative
light viewing as RGB is additive.

As said, inkjet printer drivers can handle both so no real
    need to conversion.

Last December me and two colleagues were featured in a newspaper article about calligraphers, type designers and letterers in our town (Florianópolis, Brazil).

The editor also invited us to create the cover for the art supplement. Each of us took a word of the title and did it according to our speciality.

Then, I've assembled the three contributions in Affinity Photo.

Here's a machine translation of my blog post detailing the process:

Attached is my first Affinity Photo project. I made a rendering using Rhinoceros w/ Vray plug-in. The post production was all done in Affinity Photo. Things I had issues with or am working on :

    - Panoramic Tool? I had to use GIMP.
    - Skew / Image Perspective tool? Has this been added?
    - Grass brush? Where is it?
    - The lasso tool is a bit odd for me, still. I can't get the hang of it. Adobe's was more user friendly.
    - The wand tool is choppy, regardless of how much time I spent changing parameters. I don't have time to select everything with the lasso.

All in all, awesome work Affinity Team! The interface is really nice. I am still learning and am excited to watch this develop.

I'm quite jealous as I don't get to see such perching birds
at the marsh… and this is a cute one!

Do I see that you've been a little large with the blacks re-
covery brush on this one too? This a perfect shot where
the Auto-mask feature could have performed wonders.
I like bird shots but visibly close to a feeder… not really.
I took the freedom and 5 minutes to clean the take… if
you don't agree with this, I will respectfully remove it.
I think you should have a look at you sensor as I did not

I'm pretty good friends with the vector side of AD, but recently I've been spending some time getting to know the raster side. I also got a copy of Affinity Photo as well, and so far it's really good. I spent my lunch breaks last week making and playing with brushes, this is the first thing I've used some of them for. Not quite 100% finished I don't think, but we'll see when I get round to doing any more on her.
