I may be missing the whole point of this thread somehow but, using Designer V1, if I select the Polygon Tool, Sides: 3, and hold down the Shift Key, I get an equilateral triangle.

Hi henryanthony I just opened up Affinity version 1, and no it doesn't create a equilateral triangle with the shift key held down, it creates an isosceles triangle like Aammppaa has mentioned above.

  2. Hi  v_kyr t,
thanks for replying again & the effort in answering.
If I used your triangles in a precise geometric drawing I'd end up with issues as they too are not true equilateral, the first with the protractors is 60.1 & -60.1 degrees the 2nd is 60.4 & -60.4 degrees.

In my (messy) attached image is what I mean.
I took off your red lines & put a stroke on your triangle duplicated it & converted the right one to curves.
I broke the curves using the node tools, then selected the lines to see if it was a true equilateral which it isn't.

This is sort of my point that I want to be able to create a true equilateral from the triangle shape tool panel.
Like shown, my triangle is from existing assets which is a true one but it's a hassle finding it when I need it.
Even locking keys like shift+alt or extra tools would help, but just add the equilateral in the presets or allow me to create one.

  3. Hi v_kyr,
I think the the point here is,
In my original post I presumed it wasn't an equilateral triangle, in my 2nd post I show the description I was referring to which states that an Equilateral Triangle should have equal length sides.
The Affinity triangle shape tool doesn't create that by default, well not for me.

I believe walt.farrel is also saying my description of equal sides is correct too, unless I have misinterpreted what he's meaning (then sorry walt if I've misquoted you).

  4. Lately I've needed to create/insert/make Equilateral Triangles.
You would think you could go to the triangle shape & presto make an Equilateral Triangle.
But no you have to go to a different shape maker than triangle to make a triangle like Alfred has said Here .

You can't even create one and save it as a preset as Dan_C has said Here - Why?
Dan says because you already have the shape so can't generate a new preset, but I don't have an Equilateral Triangle and why can't I make 2 of them anyway? The right angle two tringles in there already are the same triangle in reverse. So they really are two of the same shape.

Why do I have to go to a different shape maker than the shape it is, to make a shape that should already exist?

Come on Affinity fix the "Create Preset" or add the Equilateral Triangle as a default shape - Please.

  5. I'm not sure if this helps or is the same issue.
I too have had issues with what you are saying (sometimes).
I find if I select a different document tab(if another is open) or open a browser or select a different app then go back to affinity the canvas is clipped.
I have this similar issue in the resize document as well, where the resize doesn't happen until I follow the steps I suggested above, even though the resize dialog box is closed & finished.
This only started happening in version 2.

The more you think about the tool naming conventions the less sense it makes, not just for Affinity but for Adobe & others as well.

The silliest tool name by far is the "Magic Wand Tool," which has no magical powers. A few apps & a lot of users call the View Tool the "Hand Tool," but that is the generic name for hand powered tools, so in a sense all the tools are hand tools. The Zoom & Move tools are named for the action they perform but the Node Tool is named for what it interacts with, & the Node & several other tools can perform moves when positioned appropriately on the canvas. The Zoom & View tools only differ in which planes of the view they affect, so both are really document view tools. Users & staff both often refer to the "smart shape" tools but they have no intelligence.

It is all somewhat arbitrary, based on a variety of different metaphors, analogs to physical tools, & historical conventions.

    WHY WHY WHY !
My poor computer just received another load of verbal abuse today. This is becoming a regular occurrence all because of this stupid hand/view tool in Photo. It's driving me insane.

This tool is nothing but an obstruction to efficient work. We should refer to this tool as the 'MOTHER-n-LAW' tool!

The amount of wasted clicks & time it uses is beyond belief.
What is serif/affinity thinking by not addressing this issue urgently? It seems like an easy fix to achieve.
Are you doing this on purpose serif by not fixing this?

The quick temporary fix/answer should be to make the MOVE Tool the default tool!
In the future, developers could make it more dynamic with additional options, such as selecting a default tool or making the first tool the default, as suggested in other posts.

  7. SOLVED

    Thanks for replying Alfred.
Okay now I'm not so stressed, I'm not a photo guy just a quick rough graphics guy.
Where or how would I find the Exif data?

Now you've enlightened me I have rasterized & trimmed the image & it is now showing the correct dimensions.

For anyone who has this issue: Right click the image either on the canvas or in the layers panel & select rasterized & trim & that should correct the image.

  8. Hi,
I've opened this jpeg and copied it without changing anything, then opened a "New From Clipboard " or Ctrl+Shift+Alt+N.
With the new file opened the dimensions are wrong in the transform panel & it says it's rotated -90 degrees.
This is the new copied file but the original is the same with both saying the width is wider than the height, which by looking at the image that is not the case.
I have not adjusted the image in any way, not rotated it or anything.

Am I missing something here as to why it opened like this?

  9. Yes the view tool as a default tool drives me absolutely insane, wasted clicks & time for canvas movement.
It's like a car designer putting the drivers seat in backwards as default because you may want to reverse, then telling everyone they can turn it to face forward when they need.

I certainly like Alfred's option of making the default tool changeable by moving it to the top most position.
We're in version 2 now (2023) & there are some very basic things missing. Bitmap trace/selection & convert to path (curves/stroke) was available in Macromedia Fireworks over 20 years ago, Inscape does it, Gimp does it, Illustrator does it, where is it in at least Designer but Photo too?

I still use Fireworks (Fireworks is a good old friend of mine) to do this then go online to convert it to an SVG to then reimport it into designer, I'm going to London via Mars!
I should use Inscape I know, but old habits die hard, but my point is I should be able to do this in Affinity.

But to stick with this thread MOVE tool not  VIEW tool, Please.
