  1. Hi, I was under the impression that I could draw a shape with the pen tool and then convert to curves so I can adjust it better, but it seems like the convert-to-curves is only available for built-in shapes like eclipses, rectangles etc. Is that correct or is there a way to have convert-to-curves available for shapes drawn with pen tool too? thanks.
  2. If I do that, I don't see any difference when I align the shape stroke to inside. It doesn't get darker like it does for you. Or maybe you chose a larger stroke width? I tried that as well and if I follow that with a Layer --> Expand Stroke, it doesn't do anything...maybe I'm missing a step?
  3. Hi, I'm trying to learn AD and would like to make something like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=gt+dave+kombucha&safe=off&espv=2&biw=1536&bih=759&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjd1OmT-dnRAhVNHGMKHexqCjMQ_AUIBygC#imgrc=5xsFObRwEudFtM%3A I made an outer design and would like to make an inner purple design (the one where it says synergy organic & raw). I could trace the inner shape and have it match the contours of the outer design but it wouldn't be exact as I made the outer design using the pen tool. Is there a way to make the inner shape have the same contours as the outer one? thanks.
  4. thanks for creating the design MEB. Question - how did you create vector masks? I created a rectangle, applied transparency to it, but not sure how to make it a vector mask?
  5. thanks for the quick reply. I'm actually new to drawing too - did my first 'drawing' on paper yesterday. When you say that AD with tablet might not be as smooth as other software - you mean there might be a lag between drawing on the tablet and viewing it on the screen?
  6. Hi, I have a basic question about using graphics tablet with AD...I'm trying to understand the workflow - is the idea that you connect the tablet to your computer and then draw on it while viewing the drawing on your computer in AD? If so, how do you get the drawing to show up in AD? Also, do people typically draw on tablet and then scan it into AD or is it more efficient/helpful to draw on the tablet and edit/view/draw on the computer's screen in AD? I'm considering something like this Wacom Intuos: https://www.amazon.com/Wacom-digital-graphics-drawing-painting/dp/B010LHRFYU/ref=dp_ob_title_ce Would it be a good fit for someone who's just starting out in design? thanks.
  7. thanks for your replies. I'm not at my home computer right now but will try your suggestions soon.
  8. I would like to apply transparency to an object in more than one place. For example, I have a group and I applied transparency to the entire group. This works for the top right part of the image. I would like to do something similar for the bottom left part too, but can't seem to find a way to add another transparency selection. When I use the transparency tool, it always takes me to the one I already have. Any ideas on how to do this? I also tried to apply the transparency to the individual curves that make up the compound but it doesn't do anything. thanks.
  9. thanks for the reply. I don't have a bitmap image to start with so I made a pattern and then applied it over the finger and then did the transparency.
  10. I'd like to do something like this where a pattern (dots in this case) is gradually overlaid over a pen drawing shape (fingers in this case). What would be the best way to do this? thanks.
  11. I've drawn a wine glass and need to fill it about half-way with 'wine'. I could draw a shape inside it and try to fit it to the contours of the glass but are there more precise methods of doing this? I tried the boolean add/subtract methods but it didn't work. thanks.
  12. I think what I'm looking for is called status bar. This post has info about how to get it back: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/30287-windows-affinity-designer-missing-status-bar/ However, I can't figure out how to do the part where you're supposed to press the Ctrl key and start the program. Does it mean I have to quit AD, press Ctrl key and then double-click on the desktop shortcut to have it restart with default settings?
  13. that animated gif is really helpful...thanks. I did the best I could so far. Not completely happy, but will continue to learn. Meanwhile, another question: I did the arm and hand as two separate pen drawings and then placed them next to each other with snapping enabled. My question is: how do I get the border where they meet to disappear?
  14. thanks...I'm getting more comfortable with the pen tool. Made the feet but still not sure how best to draw fingers. Any idea - pen tool or use shapes? I tried pen tool but it looks very odd and unshapely. http://tinybuddha.com/blog/7-ways-decluttered-life-can-result-decluttered-mind/ thanks.
  15. thanks for both the links. Pen tool is tricky to learn but those videos are helpful. I will continue to experiment with it.
  16. I used to get AD to display tips like "Click or Drag to Extend" or "Drag to constrain" etc at the bottom left of the software, especially while using tools like the pen tool. Now, it doesn't show up anymore. I'm guessing that it got turned off somehow. Any idea how to turn those tips back on? thanks.
  17. hmm..when I click on the link, it says the video is unavailable.
  18. thanks for the tip but it doesn't look like Youtube videos are permitted here? It's just showing up as blank pages. Maybe message it to me? thx.
