  1. Hi,

I've been successfully uploading jpg illustrations to shutterstock but am curious if anyone has successfully uploaded vectors (.eps files) to their site. For my first vector, it got rejected with this error:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/38847-vector-is-too-big-or-too-small-for-the-artboard/

I changed it to be an artboard instead, exported as an .eps and now it got rejected again with this error:

EPS Format -- EPS file must be compatible with Illustrator version 8 or 10.

I must be doing something wrong in the export process, so thought of checking with someone here who has worked with SS. What settings do you use for vector export? (document size; is it placed in artboard or not etc)

    thanks.

  2. What export options did you choose?

Not that it should matter, but I notice the diagonal line is at an angle of -48.5° and the donut is wider than it is high. I would expect the diagonal to be rotated to exactly -45° and the donut to be circular.

thanks for your reply Alfred. I exported as .eps since that's what's required by SS.

Good points about the sizes/angles. I fixes the diagonal line to be at -45; how do I ensure the donut is circular? When I created it, I enlarged its size by doing Shift and extending it, but maybe that distorted the size a bit...

  3. Hi,

I'm submitting some designs to stock sites like shutterstock. So far I've submitted them as JPGs (not vectors) and they were accepted; a couple of days ago, I decided to submit as vector. I've attached the design (noleftTurn). It got rejected with a "vector is either too big or too small for the artboard" error. I looked up similar errors on the SS website and it seems like people are suggesting to make sure the design doesn't get clipped off on the sides... I'm not sure what's meant by that as I didn't have any artboards in my design and the design was centered in the page.

Here's a sample comment posted by other users when they got a similar rejection:

    https://forums.submit.shutterstock.com/topic/87326-too-big-or-too-small-for-artboard/

Any idea what changes I should be doing? I tried making an artboard of size 400x400 (as recommended in the post) and placing the design in it. Would that help? See 2nd attachment (leftSignAB)

    thanks.

    Hi kufloyd,

You are exporting the image at the same size as the document so there's no resampling going on. The Resampling algorithm only matters when you are scaling up or down the image on export.

JPG is a lossy compression format. It loses quality every time the file is saved, even when saved at 100% quality. You are simply saving it with the least quality loss possible. So if you want to provide a version in JPG for a stock site use 100% quality as you are doing. To keep image data without any compression you have to use a losslessy format like TIFF, or PNG.

    thanks for the clarification.

  5. This is an odd question, but a few weeks ago, I made this pattern (attached). I remember doing power duplicate to create multiple shapes. What I don't remember is how I progressively changed the colors so that it becomes lighter with each duplication. I didn't change the colors individually; it happened automatically with each power duplicate.  Any thoughts on how I might have done this? :) thanks.

  6. Hi kufloyd

I believe you are talking about the banding/pixelation of the gradient itself (not the edges of the objects).

Go to Affinity Designer Preferences, Performance section and make sure you have Dither gradients checked. Changing the Colour format in menu File ▸ Document Setup, Colour Tab, Colour Format dropdown to RGB/16 may also help. When you export as JPG are you compressing the image? What's the compression value you are using?

thanks MEB. I tried both those things; it seems to help a bit. question about exporting as jpg - right now, I'm not compressing the image. I export at best quality with resample set to Bilinear and quality = 100. Are those the optimal settings? I will be uploading to a stock site. The document size is 4242 x 6000 pixels.

  7. thanks for your replies Mithferion and MEB.

MEB - I've attached the jpg with an arrow pointing to the pixelated area. It shows up when I zoom in to the jpg. I personally don't care about it, but I plan on submitting it to a stock site and I think they get picky about stuff like that. Maybe it's expected with that gradient? thanks.

edit - looks like it fails to upload (error 500: upload skipped). It's a 1MB file so should be under the 20MB limit? Not sure how to fix that, but maybe you could export the .afdesign file (attached to the original post) as a jpg?

  8. I'm designing a sign that has some gradient applied to it (see arrow in attached file). When I zoom in towards that part (in AD), I can see some pixelation; it's not present in parts where I don't have a dark gradient.

If I export it as a jpg, the pixelation is even more pronounced. Jpg will compress it to a certain extent, but this is at 4242x6000 pixels, so I wasn't expecting it at that resolution. Is this sort of thing expected with gradients (both in AD and in the exported jpg)?

    thanks.

  9. Great work, noor! I especially like the cherry blossoms.

For sales: have you considered FAA? It's a print-on-demand website: you upload your work (can be photos, paintings or illustrations), set your prices and they take care of printing, shipping etc. I use it for photography but am considering using it for designs/illustrations also, as I continue to learn how to use AD. You have to do all your marketing but at-least you don't have to worry about the logistics of printing etc.

    Here's FAA's website: https://fineartamerica.com/

  10. Hi, I had the same issue. I just ended up buying illustrator and just use Affinity Designer to do my design work and export as PDF /SVG and then use illustrator to do the final EPS 10 /AI output for stock sites.  I'm about to start uploading to stock sites, so lets hope they get accepted or else I will need to learn illustrator and use it as my software for creating  stock images

wow...so you have to pay whatever AI charges per month ($20?) just for EPS exporting? I'm new to design and stock sites, so just learning to do this, but it seems like a lot of overhead just so we can deliver files that are accepted by stock sites. Looks like almost all stock sites need an EPS. by the way, when you export as EPS10 in AI, do the transparencies/gradients etc work ok? (i.e., not rasterize)

  11. just went through the search and came across this:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/9479-want-save-eps10-file-type-for-microstock-contributor/?hl=eps10

so it looks like eps10 can't really be exported to by anything other than AI? I don't have AI, so are there alternatives to doing things like transparencies and gradients in AD that won't rasterize? thanks.

  12. Hi,

I'm looking into submitting vectors to stock sites like shutterstock. One of their requirements is that the file is saved as AI8 or EPS10: (tip #1 here: https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/6-tips-to-follow-when-submitting-vectors-for-the-first-time)

My question is - what EPS version does AD export? I'm asking because apparently, using things like transparencies, gradients etc results in bitmapping with AI8, based on what's mentioned here:

    https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/bitmapping-101-troubleshooting-eps-files-in-illustrator:

"When exporting to EPS-8, you will most certainly get bitmapping if you use these effects and techniques:

    1. Transparency 2. Opacity Masks 3. Radial Gradient 4. Linear Gradient, sometimes, not always, depends on opacity masks used, or if output Transparency setting is not 100% Vectors on the Raster/Vector Balance (in the EPS Options window, see below) 5. Drop Shadow 6. Gaussian or Radial Blur

When exporting to EPS-10, most of the problems encountered in outputting to EPS-8 are eliminated, except bitmapping will still occur with Drop Shadow and Gaussian or Radial Blur."

    thanks.

  13. I'm encountering an odd behavior with this design. I created the lotus' first 3 petals (starting from left), applied a gradient to the left-most petal, duplicated the first two petals on the other side, added a stem on the left side (layer4, side1), applied the transparency tool to side1, duplicated side1 and moved it to the other side.

The problem is that side1 is not see-through under the left-most petal (which is what I want) whereas side2 can be visible from under the right-most petal. All opacity is 100%. Any idea?

    thanks.

  14. thanks for all your replies.

    reglico - that worked.

gdenby - I think it's because I've applied transparency to each of the leaves. If I remove the transparency, the stem is opaque. I guess there's no way to have it be partially transparent and not have the stem show through. Like you said, I might have to choose lighter colors. It would be nice though if I could have transparency applied, as lighter colors aren't quite the same as a transparency gradient.

  15. thanks for the reply, Hokusai. I did the divide operation and it worked for those 2 simple rectangles. Now, I tried it with a slightly more advanced set of objects (see attaches leaves document, layer 5). I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of that white line...not sure I understand your suggestion about extending the object to create a "bleed". how would I do that? thx.

  16. I have a question about opacity of objects. In the attached file, object 1 has an opacity of less than 100% and is on top of object 2 which has an opacity of 100%. The problem is that object 2 starts to show through anytime object1's opacity is less than 100%; if object1's opacity is 100%, it doesn't show through.

Is there a way I can reduce 1's opacity and not have 2 show through? I tried changing 1's opacity in both the color panel and the layers panel.

    thanks.
