In Affinity Photo make sure Document > Transparent Background is ticked and you should then see the checkerboard pattern on screen
If so, then export as a PNG file (not a JPG file)
Thanks...that works for .png. Any idea why it doesn't work for jpg?

Following this tutorial, I was able to export as a circle: https://scriptverse.academy/tutorials/affinity-designer-crop-image-into-circle.html
One question I have is: I want to just export the circle, not the white background that comes with it. Any idea how to do that? (see attached image). I have the 'transparent background' box checked in the document setup.
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm using Affinity designer and am trying to convert a photo, which is a rectangle of 4272 x 2878 dimensions, into a circle.
I'm trying to use the donut tool from within the segment tool to trim the photo down to a circle, but can't figure out how to do that. Any ideas? Basically, I want the photo to be in a circular shape, rather than a rectangle.
Thanks.

Looks like tiling of the base texture of an intensity brush. If so, you could change that texture to one that's at least as large as the canvas so it will not be tiled, or use an intensity brush that has no base texture.
That was it - removing the base texture fixed it. Thanks for your help!

I'm using a brush in pixel mode, while trying to paint the night sky. What I'm observing is that there are white 'wavy' patterns that are interspersed throughout that I can't seem to get rid of (I illustrated 3 by the red circles). I'm painting by clicking the mouse; I've also tried dragging the mouse in a line and experimented with flow/accumulation/jitter/spacing...but can't seem to figure out how to get a 'smoother' drawing. Any ideas?
If there's a way to upload a brush, please let me know and I will upload the brush I'm using.
thanks.

thanks for your reply and suggestion. I hadn't thought of changing dimensions to affect the perspective, but that makes sense. Thanks also for the great informative article!

update...just uploaded the afd file as jpg uploads are failing for some reason.
Not sure why, but the jpg file upload is failing with this error on both Chrome and edge browsers; the file is less than 2MB. Anyone else encounter this issue?
There was a problem processing the uploaded file. -200- OK

Hi there,
My question isn't really about AD as it's about how to improve my drawing skills using AD. I'm trying to draw a meadow with a river running through it. I've drawn the left side of the meadow so far. The question I have is regarding the positioning of the meadow. Right now it looks like someone's looking down at it from up above; what I'd like to do is change it so that it appears that someone's looking at it sitting down. Not sure if I'm explaining it well, but I tried playing with the grass on the edges and the shading around the corners but it still looks like it's being viewed from top down.
Any ideas are much appreciated

thanks.

This is awesome - great concept, style, theme and details!

I couldn't figure out how to fade the section of the light curve that seemed to go around the back of the dark. Using the node tool, I moved the nodes. Then I started adding transparency gradients, and saw the overlap. With snapping on using the node tool, I added and tweaked nodes to get the lines to touch. That way as I faded towards the edge, there was no overlap band. Along the way I noticed there was a small stroke on both, so I got rid of that.
I suspect working on the pixel fills by adding light levels of pixel mask would have also been a good approach, but most of the stuff I do is vector work, so that was the direction I went in.
Good idea about using the transparency tool to finesse the overlap area in combination with just having to line the edges up manually as much as possible.

Vectors are certainly "artificial." Not at all easy to work around that unless the vector boundaries are fractal complex.
So here's what I managed w. your file. Thinking it could be better. But for what its worth:
I have a question - how did you get the dark curve (on top) and light curve (on bottom) to get to align their intersection perfectly? When I lay them on, there's an overlap...trying to figure out how you got rid of that overlapping part.

Thanks for your input. It looks much better than my attempt!

Hi,
I have 2 curves in 2 different layers that have a pixel layer under each of them. What I would like to do is to have the transition between the dark curve (in layer2) and the light curve (in layer1) be smoother than it is right now - specifically, the part where the two curves intersect right now looks too artificial.
I tried transparency and fill tools but it's not quite giving the effect I'm looking for. Any ideas? I guess I could make it just one curve and use different shades of colors to create the same effect, but I'd like to learn other ways of doing it, if there are any :)
thanks!

Thanks for your reply. it makes sense that it would show through...I had overlooked the fact that this is a pixel layer, not a vector layer. I 'fixed' it by adding more pixels on the part where it was overlapping to hide the leaf as much as possible.
-
Hi,
I created this design with the intention of the flower being on top of the leaf and stem so that the part of the leaf and stem that's under the flower doesn't show through, but for some reason it is showing through. Any idea how to fix that?
thanks!

It would be nice if the item selected would then highlight the color swatch used, if it's in the recent used color swatch palette.

yes..that would be helpful...or really, any way to identify what color was used.
AD team - any thoughts on whether this is doable? :) thanks.

thanks for the reply. I'm using AD and the View->Studio->Info capability doesn't seem to be available in AD.
Any other ideas on how to do this?

Hi,
In pixel persona, if I use the brush to paint a color (say, color1) for a given shape and later on if I'd like to know specifically which color was used, is there a way to locate color1 in the palette? I know it shows the recently used colors but that's a big list of around 8-10 colors. It would be nice to know which exact color was used.
Essentially the same question for brushes too - it would be great to identify which brush was used.
Thanks!

thanks for the very helpful and detailed reply!

Hi,
Is there a way to group together brushes used in Pixel Persona under one category so I can access them all easily? Currently I use a few brushes from each category (like texture, painting, drawing etc) and it would be nice to have a list of all favorite brushes under one new custom category.
thanks!

Looks like if I open the .eps file in notepad, it reports the EPS version as 3:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
anyone know if I'm doing anything wrong while exporting? Just came across this as well:

thanks for your help.
