SuperDuperMax reacted to Patrick Connor in Affinity Photo for Windows Update 1.5.2 Available
Affinity Photo for Windows 1.6.0 is now live.

We are pleased to announce the first update for Affinity Photo for Windows (version 1.5.2).

The update can be downloaded from here. Once downloaded, close Affinity Photo and run (double click) the downloaded EXE to install it.

A list of the fixes this release contains is being prepared and will be posted shortly.

To install this version you will need to have the Affinity Photo for Windows already installed OR you will need to type in your email address and a valid Product key when prompted. When installing on top of an existing version you will not be prompted for the product key. If you need it you can find your product key (and a download button) in your Affinity store account, where you will also find the email address used to generate the key when you ordered the software.

If you have installed any previous beta version of Affinity Photo 1.5.2, that beta can be safely uninstalled before or after installing this release update, they are independent installs. The beta will stop working soon anyway.

Please report any problems you have installing or using this new version in the Windows forum here

SuperDuperMax reacted to dmstraker in 'Luminosity mask' selection macros
Following on from a previous post, I've created three sets of macros for selecting a part of an image based on five Blend Ranges 'luminosity' curves (nominally called Blacks, Shadows, Mid-tones, Highlights and Whites).

You can download the zip file here (the forum doesn't seem to like zip files, so I put it on my website).

A few points of note (more in the included .pdf file):
The 'Preview' set just cuts out the selection so you can see exactly what is being selected. It also lets you inspect the Blend Ranges curves. The 'Select' set turns this into a selection in the image. The 'Blend' set does the same for adjustments and filters. Curve overlaps are deliberately symmetrical so together they should sum to 100%. All sets include all contiguous combinations, such as 'Blacks+Shadows'.

    Hello all,

Just to let you know that I've gone back and updated three older videos to improve them - the Image/Canvas resize video has also now been split into two separate videos, covering document resizing and canvas resizing separately. Here are the updated videos:

SuperDuperMax got a reaction from BatteriesInc in Feedback, AP is a good software
In photoshop you can put sample points in the image and see in the info panel their rgb (or other) values.
If you then open a Curves layer and you ctrl shift click on the sample points, you get the corresponding points in the rgb channels of the curves layer. Then you can adjust "by the numbers" to remove color cast.

SuperDuperMax reacted to drippy cat in New section starting up for 'Affinity Photo: Solid Foundations' at Udemy
    Hi everyone,

Since the Solid Foundations course was launched last year - https://www.udemy.com/affinityphoto-solid-foundations/ it's become a best seller so thanks very much for that and from the reviews it looks like it's meeting a lot of peoples expectations. But there's always ways to make a good thing better. So I've decided to start a new faq section which I will occasionally add to in an ongoing kind of a way. Sometimes I'd be asked a question and sometimes I'd see a question asked on this forum, and sometimes I'd think 'that might make a good tutorial'.

So I've made a start with probably the question I get asked the most which is 'How do I place one image inside another?' and I've made it available as a free to view video, so if you click on the link above and head down towards the bottom end of the curriculum you can view it any time you like.

I've gathered together a list of questions that people have asked me and on this forum, and as and when I can add a question that I feel is of direct benefit to many users I will do so. I guess that's my way of saying that I want to build up this section over time and have it be at least the same quality and relevance as the rest of the videos on the course, but I don't want to get into the situation where I'm disappointing people because I'm not quickly producing a video answer to every question that's asked about Affinity Photo.

As with previous additions to the course (eg the 1.5 update section) this will not affect the price. The price stays the same.

    Thanks for your time,
    Simon Foster

SuperDuperMax reacted to MEB in Beta ..
    Hi DarkClown and others,
Everyone is entitled to his own opinion and we certainly don't mind users express them in the forums as long as we all respect each other while doing so. I believe at this point everyone already made their points clear, so I'm closing this thread as I think there's nothing more to add.

Regarding the issues with the Windows version, we are aware that some users are having problems with it. As stated before the dev team is quite small and is doing their best to fix all reported issues and improve the performance of the program.

We did have a Beta phase for Affinity apps on Windows where we corrected/fixed most critical issues/problems that were reported at the time the best we could before the release, but due to the huge Windows userbase and infinite number of hardware and software configurations out there, a considerable number of new issues/conflicts/problems were reported after Affinity's release. Since then we have been fixing bugs and solving those issues and are still doing so as they are reported.
This is somewhat expected as it's the first time the Windows code is running on a high number of hardware configs beyond the beta test phase. Things should get better as we stabilise the code and fix/look at these new reports. This takes time - specially for a relatively small team - but there's no other way to do it other than releasing the code in the wild (we must do it at some point), facing the new issues reported and work to move the application through this first/initial phase until it starts to stabilize. The Mac version is more mature because we started this same process two years ago. So please bear with us while we work on it.

For those participating in the forums it may look there's a large number of users having issues but remember there's no other place where they can report them. There's certainly more that are not experiencing any issues at all.

Here we go, another 8 videos for you! Apologies, I'll try and get round to replying to some of the queries in this thread as well.

There's a bit of a mix this time - a plugin installation video for Windows, channels work, brush importing and laying images out on a new document:

Installing Nik Plugins (Windows) Importing .abr Brushes Creating Photo Collages Product Shot Retouching #01 Undo Brush with Snapshots Editing Single Channels Channels: Greyscale Blending Channel Packing

    Hi DemPhil,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
You didn't specify which platform you are using. On the Mac go to menu Window and check Separated Mode. On Windows you can simply detach the document tabs dragging them from the top of the working area to the center so each one have its own independent window.

Editing 32-bit Renders OpenEXR: Using Alpha Channels & Association Adding Extended Borders Installing Nik Plugins (macOS) Installing & Using Nik Dfine
So, I'm dipping my toe in the water somewhat regarding plugin videos. I chose the Nik plugins as they're popular (and more importantly, free  ;)) but I'm planning to investigate plugins that might require some more manual effort to get working in the future.

The borders video I believe is long overdue for some; it focuses on extending the canvas rather than cropping into the image with a clipping mask. The two OpenEXR videos are for you 3D render guys out there!

    Hope you find them useful,
    James

Just a quick idea: merge visible, copy that layer and go to "File" -> "New from clipboard"
Now add the soft proof layer there and once done drag the tab out of the Affinity Photo window. That way you can compare them, not with a slider but maybe better than nothing.

On another note: Great videos James. Always interesting to watch. I just wonder how to get so creative to do stuff like the equations with lerp and such and having the result still look good. Perhaps some deeper color knowledge is of use in such cases.

Hot on the heels of the previous update...

I've done two videos that focus on printing your own images with more accurate results - one for Mac, one for Windows (since the print dialog and configuration is quite different between the two). They cover profiling your monitor, soft proofing the document, two ways of preparing for printing, and how to configure the print dialog to use software colour management. Hopefully they'll prove helpful to people who are doing home printing!

Printing on Mac Printing on Windows
In addition to those, I've recorded two new Photo Windows videos that focus on "projects", and so are more of a walkthrough focusing on several techniques:

    Hope they're helpful!

    Hi fteifeld,
The programs were designed to cater the needs of professionals however we can't cover all the functionality you already find on other solutions with years of development under their belt. We are still in our first version(s) and don't have the same resources as the big player(s) on the market. We will get there but this will require some time...

I have produced a pdf version of the Affinity Photo manual that you can read without starting the program. It can be interesting to put it on your phone or tablet to read when you have some time to spare. Since the file is too big to upload here, I have put it on Dropbox for you to download. It is current for the last version of Affinity Photo. Comments welcomed. Here is the link:

if you reopen the develop persona you are not editing the RAW file anymore but the pixel layer #
(non destructive develop layer is on the roadmap though)

thus the R G B pixels have already been merged into single pixels and thus you can no longer adjust the white balance/ temperature in kelvin

it now shows a percentage slider

this is one reason why shooting RAW is better than shooting JPG, if you shoot JPG you only have the option "like re entering the develop persona"

    cheers
