Create a rectangle using the rectangle tool, go to Fill -> Swatches and select 'Gradients' in the drop-down menu. Double-click one of the gradients. Designer will crash (single-click works).

Rick G reacted to dominik in What's the difference between Layers & Overlays?
    Hello Nick Trieu,

Overlays are available only in the 'Develop Persona' of Affinity Photo. Layers are a way how it works in the 'Photo Persona'. An overlay is more like a mask while a layer can be an adjustment, a pixel layer or even a live effect layer.

    Quote from the help file:
Overlays are elements within Develop Persona which are placed on top of an image. Any adjustment applied to an overlay affects the image below.
However, overlays can have a varying level of visibility, which varies the impact its adjustments have on the underlying image. In this respect, Overlays in Develop Persona act in a similar way to masks in Photo Persona.

I hope this makes it a bit more clear for you

    Hi Huang888,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
All native Affinity file formats can be opened in any of the apps of the suite. You may not be able to edit everything since some features are exclusive to certain apps but you are  also able to easily switch the document between them going to menu File ▸ Edit in Designer/Photo etc if needed.

It would be a lot easier to use the blend modes if there were separator bars between the various groups (light, dark etc.)
    A small cosmetic tweak
    Thanks

Hi Halo, Thanks for the feedback. Be sure to check out the next beta as I have been working on improvements regarding straight lines on the tablet and the history tab.

    Cheers

The problem is pretty sure a software / threading problem.
Because the lag is creatly reduced when you close the history tab. I have tested it on three systems.
And all have that problem (A Ryzen based AMD System with AMD Graphics, a Surface Pro 4 and my own PC).
If you have a Mouse with a high polling rate you can also observe this behaviour easily - history tab open, make fast curves -> no smooth lines / "edgy".
Close the history tab - problem greatly reduced. I think the app used the same Thread for undos and the event manager for input device listening.
If you use Affinity Photo only for light retouch, then you might dont notice this. But if you draw, expecially fast curves, like hair, then it is really annoying.

True on that. Affinity has proven to be much more convenient than Adobe in many areas. I guess I'm just curious with the solution after all the inconvenience I had with InDesign, but I ain't worried.

I was going to answer until I realized you received one, but heck, I would love if Affinity makes a website creation app in the some time future. Affinity Web maybe? With a red icon? I admit, I started working on a logo some time ago but never finished.

That's what happens when you are as wise as you are, Master Yoda! You see other people's common dilemmas.

I don't know if it's still the case, but back when I was in college, one of my professors told me that the industry standard is moving away from Dreamweaver because the ways of website creation has changed. There is also a program called Adobe Muse for web creation.

Am I getting off topic again?

    Hi Rick G,
No, If you need a previous software as a reference it would be PagePlus not WebPlus.
Affinity Publisher is not designed to develop/build websites.

Digital publishing, which is what you are referring to from this thread, is not a web site. Specifically, Tony seemed to indicate the possibility of an eBook format (and hopefully they would be flow or fixed layout eBooks). Neither are HTML5 publications a web site, though who knows what the future would bring. QXP's HTML5 publications can be quite nice.

Think of HTML5 publications as a responsive (or not) web publication that can be (or not) derived from the print version of a QXP file. You know those Flash-based flipbooks? Those are also not a web site, but live on the web.

I really don't see where the confusion lies.

I would like to see Publisher have the ability to create html5 flip books.  Like those flash based ones but fully html5. Yes they would need to be published on the Web but they are a publication.

So... gather the funds to contract 20 extra ninjas, graphic programmers to code 14 hours a day, they'd love some help, surely
Geez.... just be happy they are indeed working at it, plus a ton in Designer and Photo, that the suite will be complete, and meanwhile, just use Quark, InDesign, or if the project's complexity allows it, their PagePlus X9. (not gonna mention Scribus, as while I finally kind of like it, as it has quite more depth than I thought, but a lot of ppl around here (not so in many other places) dislike the UI and stuff.). The ideal situation (even while a lot of us are used to use a very heterogeneous mix of tools and brands) is a suite from the same company (great advantage on working with same UI AND (biggest advantage) files full compatibility ), and that's where it is heading with the pace they CAN given the human and money resources they have. Their only sin is to be very enthusiastic (so evil ! ;p ) at times, making a bit too optimistic plans, but in my ten companies experience I yet to find ONE where plans go EXACTLY as expected... And to be brutally honest, now that I am a full time freelancer, really, sh1t happens, in every color and flavor possible, all sort of stuff. And projects expected to be two months extend to years (and not my fault, just customers add stuff, increase complexity, or simply, needs vary, and so projects size increase. )

Heck, they are not coding a notepad alternative, Adobe took eons (I mean, decades) to reach their today's brilliant status, these are really complex applications, of increasing complexity and market/user demands. The "give it to us now" (dunno why it reminds me to the "all your base are belong to us" from that Japanese company's game) is so funny for that, and as reminds me of kids when making the Santa's letter. Dear Santa, I've been a good kid, so...I want... EVERYTHING, NOW.

IMO, the correct, practical, sensible, positive, constructive reaction here is to be excited with the new developments... And use whatever you need meanwhile... Well, what I've done all my life since stopped using traditional paper and cardboard for illustration and design and started with computers, in '91. (or could count from '85...) Back then you wouldn't think to blame Staedtler for not releasing their 1.6.3.78 beta 6B pencil...

I don't think that there are plans in this direction in the near future, because on the Mac there are FCP X and Motion - so this would mainly be for Windows. I think a DAM (as a replacement for Lightroom) has higher priority.
