artofmtl reacted to DWright in 4k Monitor and Affinity Photo (Windows 10)
Hi artofmtl,
I use both Photo and Designer with my Samsung Ultra HD 4K 28" LED Monitor on Windows 10 with the scaling set to 175% and I am having no issues with either of the apps.

Hi GoRdo_loves_CaTs,
Welcome to Affinity Forums
You can install it over the 1.5 version. It will remove/update the files as necessary.

I saw your question yesterday, Jacques, and I'm sure I answered it! As @MBd has said, soft proofing should be the last step (because the idea is to get as close as possible, subject to the limitations of your hardware, to the way the image will look when printed).

artofmtl reacted to rmar in New video Installing & Using Nik Dfine (macOS) - Why use Nik Dfine?
You probably can use AP for noise reduction but you can do that in Photoshop, Lightroom, and others. Even so, a lot of people will still purchase Topaz Denoise because it just works well. NIK Dfine might not be the latest and greatest but it's completely free now (I paid over $150 for the NIK suite a couple years ago and still use Dfine).

artofmtl reacted to Sean P in AP 1.5.1.54 Windows, Video Clone Source 1.5, Error Messages
Thanks for the files Jacques and the extremely detailed steps. I've followed them through but have been unable to reproduce the crash. Had you opened multiple raw files when it initially crashed at all? It could be actions prior to the cloning that caused a knock on effect.

Hi Artofmtl,
I've just followed through that video using AP 1.5.1.54 and the original images James used for the tutorial and I didn't get crashes what so ever.
Would it be possible for you to attach the files you are trying to use and roughly at what stage in the tutorial (as a time code) is it crashing for you?
Thanks.

Hi, I was following the video https://player.vimeo.com/video/192599318/and when I was cloning from different images following the same steps in the video I've receive 2 errors messages. After those messages I've retry and still did not work. I've rebooted my PC and still the same messages. Thank you

I have produced a pdf version of the Affinity Photo manual that you can read without starting the program. It can be interesting to put it on your phone or tablet to read when you have some time to spare. Since the file is too big to upload here, I have put it on Dropbox for you to download. It is current for the last version of Affinity Photo. Comments welcomed. Here is the link:

artofmtl reacted to R C-R in AP 1.5.1.54 Windows, Difference between a New Pixel Layer and Duplicating the original Background
Initially, the new pixel layer is empty -- there are no pixels in it. That's why in the video, Edit > Fill was used to fill it completely with 50% grey pixels to give the Dodge & Burn brushes something to work on.
When you duplicate an existing pixel layer (like the Background layer), you are filling it with the same pixels as the original.

Hi artofmtl,
The installer removes the previous version automatically and then installs the new one.

The link from within the program has now been fixed and takes you to the updates page as it should. Sorry about the confusion. Also the patch has now been announced in the News & Info section. Thanks for the prompt prompt ;)

artofmtl reacted to MEB in Seeing the mask in red or other color
Hi artofmtl,
Sorry the delay getting back to you.
As i said earlier there's no way to see/edit an existing mask as an overlay unless you use the Refine Mask functionality. In this case you are not painting directly on the mask but instead telling the software which area to process which i believe in not what you were requesting. If i understood you correctly you wanted to paint directly on an existing mask using an overlay which isn't currently possible (directly).
Picking your third test as an example:
- You have added a Denoise filter and adjusted its value - all adjustments/filters have a built in mask which is all white be default meaning the filter will affect the whole image
- you have inverted the filter's masks turning it black - now the image in not affected in any place
- you painted the sky with the Paint Brush Tool with white - the filter is now affecting the areas you painted with white, that is, the sky
- then you clicked on the Quick Mask - the quick mask will create a totally new independent selection here. It will NOT pick the existing mask and use it - that's the issue i was referring to. If you want to use an overlay at this point using you existing mask your only option is to refine the mask. To do this select the mask in the Layers panel, go to menu Layer ▸ Refine Mask then use the Matte Brush (button) from the Refine dialog to paint over the boundaries between the land and the sky - the software will process them and will generate a clean selection from them -, and the Foreground button to add/define elements that belong to the sky (what you are actually selecting) and Background brush (button) to define what belongs to the land (which is not part the selection).
