If you're asking if manual cleaning with raster tool set of a bitmap image is possible in Designer the answer is yes, it is possible, in the Pixel Persona mode. You also have available layer adjustments and layer blend modes to help you.

I believe you are still too new to AP's brushes system (even if you might be a total expert in Painter's or Photoshop brushes system), as my issues with it are definitely not configuration. If you clicked  the "more" button, or just double click in any brush (which I rather prefer, as it gets saved without problems, etc), you would see there are even graph curves to set very fine tuned a lot of features ,even more than in some top dogs in the industry. My issues, and most painters' here is with brush performance. (lag, accuracy, some jitter in zoomed out, aliasing, etc) . Which are probably going to be solved in 1.6 soon to come version. But seriously AP has a crazy load of configuration possibilities for its brushes. Plus, once the basics are solidly working, one does not need much more, -is saying this to you a realistic, seasoned illustrator, I professionally publish stuff, is not a hobby... - Is not like some super complex brush is going to be critical in someone making much better art pieces... A simple round shape brush is way more than enough to make a master piece, and wont have certain excessive custom brush touch of which a number of artists make an abuse of...

I was just about to recommend that link as a much better test :P, "whacked rgb" displays good to me in a color managed aware app and purple as it should in non aware. That still doesn't explain why the car is purple also in properly color managed apps.

With memory its pretty simple, if your stuff fits in it you're good, if not, it will access the storage disks and you will experience slowdowns and thus should buy more of it; "more" has never been "too much" with computers. ;)

16gb of decent 3000mhz ddr4 goes for ~120 bucks so there is no reason for less especially with content creation applications in these 4K / soon 8K times.

If your data does not fit in RAM it will use the internal disk and things like file read/write, history, backup, saves also use it often, so its also important that what you have there is fast both in speed and access times.

So, basically, what I'm saying is that you have to decide which combo (CPU/RAM/DISK/GPU) you think it will suite your usage best for your budget; and that purchase should be something that is balanced performance wise in all important areas; because the "slowest" part in your setup will be the cause the performance "bottleneck".

For my usual illustration & design work, for now a sweet spot is 16GB RAM, an i7, and average (but modern) graphic card. Other components don't affect importantly my performance. One can go into detail to huge depths there, but merely that's what I need to work well with my usual optimizations.  Of course, the more the merrier, if a family member one day (when cows will fly) give me as a present an intel octa core with 64 GB ram and a gtx 1080, I'll be a  happy camper.  For some one doing this type of work, I see for these days a nice fit the mentioned above. And as a rule, max performance at a minimum cost. And this is not just a hobby... I was for years in a company with an i5 with 4gb.  Often making large print files. That was simply horrid (web work was fine). You can, indeed, do the stuff, with some crazy tricks, but is a royal slow down, and a very limiting problem.  Just like having an i7 is better than an i5, because even if your focus is your 2D application,  you will find your self, in pro workflows -and hobbyist, too- opening as mentioned above, other packages, tools, things being made in the background, even just consider the system tasks (I keep those at a minimum, but there are some you can't avoid) . All that uses cpu, you are multitasking even using only one app, and multi tasking is helped largely with more cores. I mean, not only RAM. But as mentioned, doing illustration and general graphics, with many layers (among quite some other reasons, working wit many layers is a total savior with clients wanting many changes) and usual work flow with a client, that base I mentioned seems to be a nice fit, in my experience. I'm right now with 8GB in RAM, and have been able to check how ram usage is a bottle neck here.  Of course, depends on your type of work, or even your habits while working.

There is no need to say, that's the logical consequence. Everybody in terms of his real needs and available budget here! - Though putting in 16 GB instead of 8 GB RAM on a Windows box shouldn't hurt that much here, it's cheap in contrast to the fruit company computers!

I don't know what to make of that petapixel page -- earlier today I opened it using Mike's link & the car was orange. 15 minutes ago I did the same thing with the same browser (Safari 10.0.3) on the same Mac with exactly the same settings & now it is purple.

Just to make things that much more confusing, the Cameratico link provided by Lojza says my Safari browser is properly supporting ICC 2 & 4 profiles ... but using the Safari Develop menu User Agent item to try to convince the site I am using some other browser keeps mis-identifying it, for example as Chrome 42.0.2311.135 when the User Agent is set to MS Edge or as Chrome 51.0.2704.103 when it is set to Google Chrome Mac.

For the petapixel page I have also tried emptying Safari's caches, turning off all extensions, & opening it with other browsers but the car remains purple.

I've asked because usually manufacturer's own apps use the hardware better, or have more options for scanning; which is a big plus if you ask me.

There is also NAPS2, which is open source, there is also a portable version if you prefer this; maybe you will find it useful.

You will have to open a scanned image file, no option to scan it directly in AP.

pixelrain reacted to dogcow in UI/UX Prototyping and Animated Designs in AD
I'm not sure Affinity Designer needs full animation tools for prototyping -- that is a big feature set, hard to get right, and I feel that it would be getting away from Designer's focus -- but I do think Designer is lagging behind Sketch in terms of UI design workflow, and I fear unless they really target UI design, Sketch is going to be the de facto UI design tool. It kind of already is. And that annoys me, because many of Sketch's UI choices are weird and the app itself feels poorly coded. Not a big fan.

I guess there's more of a general question in my head about Designer's focus and its future. Is it a general vector tool? Is that a good idea when many desktop apps are becoming more focused? If it's a general tool like Illustrator, why are Designer and Photo two separate products? When I'm doing UI design, I often don't know which to pick. In fact, I recently built some mobile screens in Photo. The vector tools in Photo are far more competent than the ones in Photoshop. So why not just have a generalized design app that supports both vector and image editing? I get that Photo seems marketed to photo editors with new features like HDR and 360 stitching, but then why does it even have design tools and vector support? I don't see a clear separation of tasks between the two products, except for hardcore editing needs.

TL;DR I guess what I'm saying is, maybe it'd be better to have a generalized design editing tool which supports both photo editing and vector illustrations. And then have a separate app that is focused on UI design and other layout needs, which maybe full prototyping tools could be added to.

Personally, I'm more than happy with using other applications for "managing" my images so I would rather not bloat the Affinity app with "DAM"; if its is being developed, please make it external and optional; my two cents. Thanks.

    Bridge isn't really a DAM, though - it's just a file manager/browser.

Faststone Image Viewer - or even Google Picasa - would do that job as well, not to mention being much easier to actually get hold of.

pixelrain got a reaction from Alfred in [AP & AD] Use selected brush as an eraser toggle in context toolbar
Hi, i would find very useful a "use selected (active) brush as an eraser" quick toggle on the context toolbar in "pixel" personas.

This would improve painting or texturing workflows as in some cases i would prefer to erase with same brush tip to maintain initial texture & look.

Yes, there are keyboard shortcuts to quick toggle eraser brush but i would still have to reselect the brush i had first, adjust size and settings, also if not careful one can switch between tools by mistake and be forced to ctrl + z after.

AD Beta 1.5.2.56 on windows, file was already created with an older version of AD, did some changes in latest beta, tried to save it and got error.

Also tried save as, and export; both produced a 0 kb file. Same error if saving in different locations.

Local hdd, no dropbox, no AV, no USB stick, administrator account, no blocked permissions, clean installed beta.

This morning tried again and it worked.  -_-

LE: Argh, should have posted in Designer Beta forum, my bad.

You could try to make the edges straight with Mesh Warp tool in Photo, you will have to add many, many control vertices. For the crease in the middle Inpaint Brush tool might work; then fix the distortions with Patch tool or Clone brush. Not sure of the quality of the output though :\ Maybe others could help you more, good luck !

Designer is primarily a vector app, but it has the "Pixel" Persona, where you can find some raster brushes, a mode similar to Affinity Photo, but gives you less options. Affinity Photo is more similar to "Photoshop" style of drawing/painting.

Maybe you would have been better off with Affinity Photo in that case, look at some examples on their Vimeo channel to check thier features.

If you are looking for something even more traditional you should look at apps like Corel Painter, ArtRage, Sketchbook Pro, Krita, MyPaint, and so on.

Its hard to say if AD or AP will include more painting tools/features in the future.

If you feel you made the wrong choice with AD maybe you can ask them to change your key for AP.

pixelrain reacted to R34V3r in Affinity Photo 1.5.0.45 slow and crashes often on Windows 8.1
I wanted to illustrate the severity of the performance issue with a very simple situation. I want to know if this is happening to just me or others as well. I am having performance issue with both Designer and Photo on all 3 machines I have tested it on (Desktop, Laptop, Surface). To illustrate the severity of the problem I tested the following situation on Affinity Designer on my desktop with the following specs:

    - i7 3770K 3.4Ghz CPU
    - 16 GB RAM
    - AMD R9 390X 8GB OC GPU

note that the issue is just as bad in Affinity Photo.
As you can see, Affinity is recognizing my GPU as the renderer and has permission to use all of my 16 GB RAM.

I started by creating a simple 512 X 512 document and loading a 512 X 512 PNG of a box in it. As I rotated the image you can see CPU usage jumped to 100% with a whopping 80% going to Affinity, If I do this on the same machine in Photoshop, CPU usage only jumps to 12% max.

I continued by scaling the image with shift-down (so no ratio lock). As before the CPU usage jumps to 100%, but you can also see fragments in the image from areas that still need to be computed. Photoshop has no issue with scaling the same box whatsoever.

So let's stress it a little more shall we? Masking is something I do every time I fire up Photoshop and Affinity, so I created a donut shape and but it as a mask on the box image, I also put an inner shadow effect on the image (something I use a lot as well). When scaling the image now my CPU level is ... you guessed it: 100%. Fragments are now really annoying at this point and happen a lot more often:

I continued by changing the donut a bit by making it a Half donut, Fragments are now a real problem:

Lastly, I converted the donut to curves, selected all corners with the corner tool, and rounded them all at once, In this operation there is a lot of lag present and if you wanted to reach an exact corner radius on sight, you wouldn't be able to do that:

when scaling the image now, fragments are still an issue but a lot of stutter occurs now as well, this lag is on a level that isn't workable anymore.

I feel like my 2816 core counting gaming GPU isn't used at all here and every pixel is calculated by my 8 threaded CPU. I feel like the only way I can have good performance would be to buy a Intel Xeon CPU with a lot of cores that costs 2K+. Note that in real life, 512 X 512 is a small size for content so the fact it has performance issues with this on a machine like this is unacceptable to say the least.

I don't want to bash Affinity here to be a bad application, because it isn't. It's feature packed and in some ways it does more than Photoshop. I really want to make this my Photoshop/Illustrator replacement because the workflow is much more streamlined and more fun. But as a Windows only guy, I feel like this is a bad port of a mac application and the weak performance is really a dealbreaker for me. I don't know if mac has the same issues but if so, they can't call this the smoothest image editor on the market, not by a long shot. I really want this issue to reach the developers and judging by the response on this forum, this might not be the most efficient way to reach them.
