  1. Or is it that my PC is not powerful enough? - it runs Photoshop without problems.

Software is not similar under the hood even if they produce the same result. If your computer specs are powerful enough depends on the size and the complexity of the documents you're working on. More cpu cores at a higher frequency and more ram never hurt anybody. Your gpu is more than enough. :)

  2. Think it would be much more simple to just cut the desired portion and sun on new layers, then rescale it, on the background you could use a large inpainting brush to fill the cut or just do a gradient between color samples from top and bottom. Then you place the sun where you want it and play with blends, inpainting tool or clone tool brush.

Mesh warp tool starts with a whole layer selection with 4 points, double click anywhere in it to add more points.

  3.

First is the font options. Is there was to add more fonts to designer?

You don't add fonts to Designer; you add fonts in the operating system you are working on. Software uses only what is installed in the OS. :)

Also when I create a design and it has numbers and I print them off a lot of times the numbers print out with vertical and horizontal lines around them. How do I go about getting rid of that?

You should provide an example for this.

Finally, I was wondering how i can cut and crop things outside of just squares?

You should provide an example for this too :P This could mean vector crop tool, export slices, document export ...

You can create a shape with the pen tool or compounds and transform it to mask for what is beneath. (Select it in Layers panel, right click, "Mask to below").

  4. Free trials are available, best course of action would be to just test the apps yourself and see if you can work in them how you want or if the output satisfies your quality requirements. :)

LE: Currently there are no vector transform tools in AD other than flip, rotate, skew. There is a mesh warp / perspective tool in AP but that works only with raster layer content. Technically you could create a perspective plane in AP and apply an image to it, which will inherit those perspective settings.

Depending on how complex your scenes are, that could work, or not. Furniture details would show through depending on layer alphas and blending mode, i guess ...

  5. New to AP or new to photo manipulation / raster graphics editors in general ?

Start with the basics: what raster means, what is color, what are layers, adjustments, blending modes, effects, brushes and so on.

After that you'll have a much clearer picture of what the app can do for you and you'll know how to use them to create whatever you have in mind.

  6.

It might be Affinity is relying on CUDA acceleration at the moment (as most macs are on NVidia) for hardware acceleration.

Affinity does not use CUDA. If it would, a nVidia gfx card would have been a requirement.

I think this problem occurs with AMD RADEON video cards after testing Affinity Photo on 3 different systems

Mac Pros use Radeons, and they were primarily developed for Macs, so doubt it is that either.

  7. While it doesn't have background patterns function yet, maybe you can replace that with the following steps: create a shape, select the Fill tool, in the Type category drop down on the context toolbar select Bitmap and load an image and use the handles to scale / align it. You will need to have an tileable image similar to your imported background pattern from Ps.

  8. Hi, i would find very useful a "use selected (active) brush as an eraser" quick toggle on the context toolbar in "pixel" personas.

This would improve painting or texturing workflows as in some cases i would prefer to erase with same brush tip to maintain initial texture & look.

Yes, there are keyboard shortcuts to quick toggle eraser brush but i would still have to reselect the brush i had first, adjust size and settings, also if not careful one can switch between tools by mistake and be forced to ctrl + z after.

  9. Last night got this error.

    post-44528-0-84085000-1486460687_thumb.png

AD Beta 1.5.2.56 on windows, file was already created with an older version of AD, did some changes in latest beta, tried to save it and got error.

Also tried save as, and export; both produced a 0 kb file. Same error if saving in different locations.

Local hdd, no dropbox, no AV, no USB stick, administrator account, no blocked permissions, clean installed beta.

This morning tried again and it worked.  -_-

LE: Argh, should have posted in Designer Beta forum, my bad.

  10. Designer is primarily a vector app, but it has the "Pixel" Persona, where you can find some raster brushes, a mode similar to Affinity Photo, but gives you less options. Affinity Photo is more similar to "Photoshop" style of drawing/painting.

Maybe you would have been better off with Affinity Photo in that case, look at some examples on their Vimeo channel to check thier features.

If you are looking for something even more traditional you should look at apps like Corel Painter, ArtRage, Sketchbook Pro, Krita, MyPaint, and so on.

Its hard to say if AD or AP will include more painting tools/features in the future.

If you feel you made the wrong choice with AD maybe you can ask them to change your key for AP.
