I don't think you will see it until version 2.0
This is a major feature request that I keep seeing over and over. There are also good and bad implementations. I would only want it included if it's very good.

You are right. Adobe can only place PDF files, not open them. Of course they can still be vector but that's it. This might be a good opportunity to show your colleague Affinity as it really can do a lot that Indesign cannot, especially if you can show how you can edit pictures without going to Photoshop. Affinity brilliantly opens PDF, IDML, or can copy and paste fairly well from Indesign. It is a shame that Indesign has not had much love in the last 10 years. It's basically the same as CS6 with a few small things added. I have to pay the subscription or I would be locked out of my thousands of INDD files. Show knows though now that IDML is available for import, I think it will change everything.

Bryce got a reaction from Fixx in Why are arcs and radius' based on resolution?
I know I have wondered this before and never quite found a solution but if I copy from one document that's 300 dpi vs another that is 600 dpi the radius' and arcs will all double (or shrink going the other way)? Is that a bug or a feature because it doesn't really make sense to me and I need to understand.

Bryce reacted to big smile in Automatically find other missing images in the same folder
When locating missing images in the Resource Manager, it would be great if the Resource Manager would automatically locate other missing images in the same folder.
    Example:
My document has 4 linked images:
    1.jpg
    2.jpg.
    3.jpg
    4.jpg

They are all stored in the "my images" folder. This gets renamed to the "linked images" folder, so I need to re-link them.
I use Resource Manager to re-link 1.jpg. After doing this, resource manager will display a dialogue stating "Other missing images found in this folder. Ok to relink?" I can then click "OK" an images 2.jpg to 4.jpg will be relinked without me having to do it manually.

Bryce got a reaction from Patrick Connor in [IDML Implemented] How can I open Indesign (indd and idml) Files in Publisher?
Well the conversions didn't go quite as well on other files. I'll post it in the bugs. My newspaper spreads, which are 2 facing pages came in as one large single page. I also get quite a few crashes when trying to open the files.

Bryce got a reaction from Patrick Connor in [IDML Implemented] How can I open Indesign (indd and idml) Files in Publisher?
I just opened a batch of newspaper ads in a file (probably 100 or so) and the conversion took a little time but it seemed to work. Even handling the broken links and fonts similar to Indesign. Great job! We'll be trying it out a lot more in the coming days.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
We are quite proud of the software and will continue to add new features IV future versions. I do not know if this particular one will be included in free 1.x updates or not, sorry.

Bryce got a reaction from Fixx in Publisher: step and repeat
I'm sure a professional printer is not using Indesign to do n-up or Step and repeat. There are dedicated programs out there just for the functions needed press and step and repeat and n-up are just the basics. Quite Imposing is quite amazing - also made by the Brits - and gives so much more that it is worth every penny. Since it works with PDFs you have the functions from any program, not requiring it to be built into every one.

Here is what it looks like on mine:

screen redraw.mov   It looks pretty good here but that's because I'm zoomed out a little. I see that your new mac is running at a lot higher resolution than your 2011 iMac and I think that has to do with everything. The way Affinity handles graphics, is based upon how zoomed in you are to move all of the pixels around. If I zoom in and do it I get the same look as you. So I think it has a lot to do with the  drivers and Affinity moving around a lot more pixels on the retina display. Mine is recorded on an external 4k display since I'm at work.
This is also not lag in the traditional sense but it's skipping frames, giving the jumping look. It's doing that so it can move in real time rather than the 60 FPS and then have lag if it has to display all 60, then it would have to slow down.
It might help to disable Automatic graphic switching in the Energy Saver control panel.

It would help to know what you mean by "simple shapes" & what tool you are trying to use to create them. AD has 19 built-in so-called 'quick shapes,' most of which have multiple settings available on the context toolbar plus modifier key options to constrain their aspect ratios capable of creating a wide variety of simple (& not so simple) shapes.

Select all that text, then look in the Character studio panel (View > Studio > Character) where you may find that you have a white background specified:

If so, click on it, and then click on the circle with the red slash to remove it:

If you find this happening regularly, you might want to reset your defaults. After doing the above, with the text still selected, Edit > Defaults > Synchronize from Selection followed by Edit > Defaults > Save.

Bryce reacted to luketype in 1 bit Tiff Transparency and Coloring
    Hi Tony,
thanks for the prompt reply! Such a feature is a must for us pro workers. In AIllustrator the 1 bit tiff can be imported and colored on the fly leaving white transparent. Being an affinity Designer early and enthusiastic adopter I really think this feature should be implemented as a priority. I am not a programmer but now I am curious about how Adobe did the magic because in the old days also freehand treated 1 bit tiff the same way. Is that difficult to implement that feature?

    Many thanks

Bryce reacted to Nazario in How to colour greyscale/bitmap logos
InDesign if i imported a bitmap TIFF file I could set its colour quite easily simply by selecting the image and choosing a colour from the palette. This proves very useful when working with simple logos and symbols that require being a specific colour. You could also set the background colour of the box the logo resides in just as easily. So with a few clicks a black and white logo could become green with an orange background for example without having to manipulate the original file.
Ive been looking and still not found a definitive answer for doing this in APUB. How does one work with greyscale/bitmap TIFFs and easily convert their colour within APUB without affecting the linked file?

    wonderful.  thanks!
Now I do have a suggestion... there should be a LOCK for column gutters so you can adjust them together.  seems tedious to have to adjust each column space individually, when, in most cases you'd want all spacing the same.
Another note: I think its an AMAZING feature that you can adjust the width of each column independently!  This is something that InDesign is lacking.  great feature!!

Bryce got a reaction from DavidDoesAffinity in PDF woes
No problem. Another solution, that is if the printer supports it, so to check the box in affinity when exporting to a PDF, make sure that overprint black is specified in the export box. The only way this will work though is to be printing using a postscript driver/printer from Acrobat. It will also make your blacks more dense.

We use that quite often to ensure no gaps throughout the print run.

I once made a mistake in a drawing and ran 1000 units. A bit more wasted cost than 209,33€. It was a different mistake in a different software. But totally my fault. The shop doing the cutting's moto is "We make it exactly like your file." And they did. I have always checked my output files before and since...but the mistake I made slipped through.
I don't know why the scale was different between your two files. The only time I have had size weirdness in Affinity software was related to the document DPIs.

I'm not sure why this discussion is in a Publisher Bugs forum.
But in case you're not aware, Publisher can make any character into a faux superscript using the Superscript/Subscript ("S:") pulldown in the Positioning and Transform section of the Character panel:

Had a fun little play around manipulating fire! I think I need to spend a little more time refining the masking especially on the fingers but otherwise it was pretty easy to do!
I used Live Filter > Sharpen > Clarity to get some grungy face texture going on, a few adjustment layers for lighting and then I masked in some flame images from a resource pack I bought earlier in the year

Not, but only because the same sequence of actions as you took in Designer, when done in Publisher, keeps the path fill and stroke. It is the inconsistency in identical actions that suggests to me there's a bug in one of them.
Thanks for the explanation of what you did. There's still an oddity to be explained.
If I use the Artistic Text tool in Design
er and make the letter A, then convert it to Curvers, then convert that to a Text Path, and then type a phrase, I get this:

In the Layers panel this shows up as:
In your file, the Layers panel shows:
So (a) why does it appear to be normal artistic text rather than text on a path, and (b) why is the phrase "Neither Affinity Designer nor Affinity Publisher is Broken" incomplete on the Layer panel?

Bryce reacted to MickRose in Is it possible to disable the movement of selected text?
I like the idea that you can select non- contigeous text blocks - that's good. But sometimes I've found myself double clicking to select a word and then try to select the whole paragraph with the mouse. What happens is the selected word(s) move to the new position, making a jumble. If I could disable the direct movement of selected text that would be good. I know I can press the escape key to deslect a selection but I'd rather have an option to not allow direct movement of selected text. Maybe it already exists but I can't find it.
