I wouldn't have heard of either VivaDesigner or PhotoLine if it hadn't been for forums like this one.

    For me it ist.
I never had thought to leave Adobe if they haven’t changed to a license model that becomes more and more like 1984 (if you know what I mean : )

I want to own my software, not rent it. I want to sell it, if  I do not need it anymore.
And, I do not want to pay 700 Euro a year for software I never user.

There should be four 'slides' on the left of the Mac Welcome screen, that show in sequence a 'See what's new in 1.5.4,' a promo for the Designer Book, a link for getting the Grade UI, & a promo for Photo 1.5 slide. There should be a row of four dots at the bottom indicating which slide is shown & "<" & ">" buttons on the left & right sides of the slide to manually move among them.

Some users have reported that the Grade UI slide does not appear if a firewall or a privacy blocker like Little Snitch prevents the app from "phoning home" -- perhaps that is what is happening for you?

Geez, give it a rest. Commenting in 172 threads (I'm exaggerating. Slightly) isn't going to push this further up the ladder.

I just received your workbook - shocking quality out and in.
A piece of art in itself ripe for the MOMA
     - every penny well spend!

I'm certainly not trough this excellent publication until the next pope will be selected ...

Sir!With all due respect - your absolutely wrong.
One lives today - and this book, an excellent piece of art in itself tackles all the problems a new or advanced user may find a solutions for - easy to follow. Brings a willing layman to an expert level or so. TODAY!
And that is what counts - compare the book to a few draft beers (about same price): When consumed both bring cosiness & joy but beer goes rather fast down the way of nature - thats natural. At least with this very well crafted publication it stays longer in the system and will not so fast go the way of nature - that what counts - and is remains useful even after leaving the pub. eg when version 2.0 will be out.
What will not be the case for the beer leftover...

I've just bought a copy of Affinity Designer (I'm moving away from Adobe Illustrator) and am going to work through these tutorials. Thank you very much for putting them together here. From a quick play around in AD, everything seems very intuitive and I'm sure I'll feel right at home very soon.

Relative to the current status, a 1.6 beta would be to test new features and not for production. With a 1.5.x beta, an expected stability improvement, Serif encourage the use of them over the current official release.

The 1.5.5 Beta is a Customer Beta - so it needs to see your installed 1.5.4 from the Mac App Store in order to allow it to run. If you remove 1.5.4 then it won't run anymore... :)

Valuable review. AD is not just a clone of AI. Each tool has a specific way of working, and you showed how AD got the same job done. By your account, faster and easier.

If you get around to it, I'd love to see a tute on how you did the face shadings.

The masking features in Affinity replaced any need for wanting the Appearance Palette like in Adobe Illustrator. The book was a quick was to ramp up and understand the full power of Designer and I haven't tried everything yet!

Looking forward to a book for Affinity Photo!!!

    Great work, Affinity team!

i would love to see a Affinity Photo Workbook to accompany this one, and maybe even an Publisher book when it becomes available
    lets face it
your products are just amaxing (yes i spelled that right) and they should have equally amaxing books - like the workbook - to accompany them on any creators table

My self-indulgent Christmas gift just arrived early.  :)

The ADW is a gorgeous publication, jam-packed with ideas and well organized information. My wife picked it up and could hardly believe all those glossy pages and hard backing weigh so much. The workbook is a credit to you all--so much hard work and thought went into this and it shows on every page.

Just for the record: I was forced to order mine from Amazon USA, after Serif accepted the order but it got kicked out of the system once they saw I don't live in France, but part of France in the French West Indies. They cheerfully refunded. So Amazon sent the ADW to Miami, Florida, and instead of ocean freight, I had it couriered to the airport and it reached the island the following day. There was no chance of it reaching me until mid-January otherwise  :(

As a few commented on shipping damage. :( This publication should be packed in more than a close fitting cardboard box. I expect more from Amazon, but after couriers get their hands on them, hurling them like frisbees crashing into container walls, not many items can survive that treatment. So if you got Amazon to test slightly larger boxes with some bubble wrap to protect inside, that should foil most wayward package loaders. The corners of the spine were damaged and it has a dent on the front--not really bad, but if I was buying it in a book store, I would expect a discount. You may want to look into this, as it is a beautiful publication and seeing dents in the cover detracts from the beauty of your product.

I will do a review of the contents as I work through it. Suffice to say, a quick scan reveals a very comprehensive project-based book, which teaches all the basics and is quite a worthy addition to my reference shelf.

    What are your thoughts...

    Hello !

I am a fine art photographer with a long history using Adobe products. I have always disliked their products. The CC cr** was the last straw. Thanks to Affinity for an alternative. A DAM product from Affinity would make me ecstatic.

    Hi QueenBee Debbie,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
To access the brushes in Affinity Photo go to the Brushes panel and click on the dropdown on the top of the panel. They should be listed on the bottom.
To access the brushes in Affinity Designer, change to the Pixel Persona - because these are raster based brushes - (menu File ▸ Personas ▸ Pixel on Windows or menu Affinity Designer ▸ Pixel Persona on a Mac) go to the Brush panel and click the same dropdown to access them.

Michael, I just updated my AD and AP. The downloaded file from @Yannik worked fine for me, except that when I imported the two afbrush files they are not showing up in my brush list on both AP and AD.  So now you've got me wondering why! The UI swatch imported beautifully on both programs and is working great. It's only the .afbrush files that are not showing in the list, even though i got a popup that said the brushes were installed.

    Yannik thanks for these files!

    QB Debbie
