  1. One thing that has always bugged me about Designer is if I open a different file type, such as an SVG and Save it, it prompts me to save it as an .afdesign file.  No, I'm editing a SVG file, I should be able to just save it without going through Export and thus creating a new file.  Trying to use a pipeline for character creation in a 2D animation application, but cannot get it to work because when I export it, it creates a new file thus breaking the link with the animation application.

The suggestion is if creating a new file, prompt to save as .afdesign, but if editing a file, save should just save it as that file type.

  2. My system is fine, no other errors. I've run every scan known to man, and a few unknown ones too. Every other application I have works fine, and I have many applications. Only these new affinity apps fail. I re-installed 1.10 and they work flawlessly. I'm done with version 2 until they offer an installation other than the MSIX. One that allows the user to pick an installation location, and be in control of our own systems.

When you run the installer, before hitting the button to start, there's a check (if I remember well) to run it just after installed. You can un-check it (in the hopes it's only that link wrecked).

But it shouldn't crash, anyway. Did you get any clue from the Windows Event Viewer ? (Windows Administrative tools->Events Viewer->Windows events-> Applications Or...right click on Start, click "run" (or window key + R), type eventvwr  and hit enter. Look for the red "!" for any recent crashes).

Regardless if the installer tries to start it, or I try to start it via the Start Menu or the desktop shortcut, I get the exact same error.  There does not seem to be anything in the event viewer when it does this.

Your screenshot seems to show that you tried to run the app by running the installer again. What happens if you just run it from the Start menu, rather than trying to reinstall it?

No, it automatically tries to start after installing.  As I said, I had it installed, but uninstalled it.  After it was uninstalled, I re-installed it.  At the end of the installation, it tries to start it and this error appears.  if I attempt to start it from the Start menu or the desktop shortcut, I get the same exact error.

  5. I had it installed and it was working ok, but because it didn't offer any installation options (such as installed location), it installed on my C:\, which was running low on drive space.  I used EaseUS Partition Master to allocate additional space to my C:\ drive, and the applications stopped working.  I uninstalled and re-installed, and now they just will not start at all.  Worst installation experience EVER!  Going back to Version 1.10 until these issues with version 2.0 are resolved, and a decent installation is provided.

  6. I just came to this forum to see if anyone was reporting issues with Booleans (on PC/Windows)...  In the previous version, I was always able to convert my Text to curves, select all the letter shape layers and Boolean them with the Add to get a singular object that I could use in other boolean operations.  But now, it behaves irractically.  Some "curves" it combines, others it does not.  If two letters overlaps, instead of the Add it look like it does an Xor.  Here is an example of a text converted to curves, then a couple of the letters (shapes) re-arranged to overlap and then the Add operation on it.  The first 2 letters (shapes) Xor'd and the S & q shapes did the Add...  What?!?!?!  It's very frustrating...

Do you have Cartoon Animator 5? My CA5 will not open Designer and not Photo. With v1, there was no problem at all.

Yes, I do.  And they open fine for me, but I had to do the registry hack in order to even find them.  Without that hack, it is doubtful it would work for me.

[EDIT] It worked yesterday, but today it doesn't work at all now... Grrrr.....

If I had known this was going to be so problematic, I most certainly would not have upgraded.  The aliases mentioned above do not work.  And while Serif should've come up with a better installation plan, I blame Microsoft.  It is them who are hiding files and folders on our very own systems, and implementing "standards" for companies to follow that propagate that inaccessibility.

For programmes, plug-ins or similar that require a programme path, the following tip may help.

    Third party integrations

App Execution Aliases for all apps have been added (these names will work from anywhere, e.g. Run dialog, command line, etc):
If you need to browse for a physical file, they are located in

    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\WindowsApps

    called:

    • AffinityDesigner2Beta.exe
    • AffinityPhoto2Beta.exe
    • AffinityPublisher2Beta.exe

They can be enabled (default) or disabled in Windows Settings (search for "App Execution Aliases")

Unfortunately, while these will allow the start of these respective apps, other apps that need the path to the EXE will not accept these.

  9. So there are several issues...  These Affinity apps now appear to install into C:\Program Files\WindowsApps which is a hidden folder that we apparently cannot access, not even on our own systems.  Using a Registry hack, I was able to finally look inside that directory to find where the Affinity stuff now installs.  I have been able to successfully add these paths to Cartoon Animator and it will open the apps as expected.

    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\SerifEuropeLtd.AffinityDesigner2_2.0.0.1640_x64__3cqzy0nppv2rt\App\Designer.exe
    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\SerifEuropeLtd.AffinityPhoto2_2.0.0.1640_x64__3cqzy0nppv2rt\App\photo.exe

However, my ON1 apps (Effects, Portrait AI, etc...) no longer recognize that Affinity is installed, and it no longer automagically installs as plugins for Affinity Photo.

And unfortunately, the registry hack I followed to get access to WindowsApps now breaks all my other ON1 apps, and McAfee is now counting them as viruses.  So while the registry hack is my own fault, I still blame serif for making it necessary in order to find the actual executables.

Bottom line, I am greatly displeased with Ver 2.0.

The batch file and/or shortcut does not work for applications looking for an EXE.

  10. I never knew this.  I always just assumed because the stroke and fill boxes didn't show up on the top toolbar when multiple objects were selected, that meant it wasn't possible. But I used the stroke and color options on the left side toolbar and it did work.  So I retract my suggestion, or perhaps revise it to make this a little more obvious somehow.  I've been using Affinity Designer for a couple of years, always frustrated thinking I had to set stroke and fill options individually... My own fault I suppose... heh heh heh

Did you figure this out?  I am having the same issues with my files that I print with Glowforge.  The option right now is to put them into inkscape and delete the extra lines, but I'd like to use affinity.

I use Affinity Designer (Windows) for printing to my GlowForge all the time, and have never seen these double lines...  I export to SVG and color the lines red, set them to 0.8 size and have no issues at all.

  12. Ahhh... Not only an Image, but it also has to be rasterized apparently.  I added an 8bit RGB image, amde a selection, and still nothing.  So an "Image" layer is not quite the same thing as a "Pixel" layer, because to get it to work, I had to right click my image and choose Rasterize before it would work.  But it did work.  Thanks for your help.

Just one more quick question, what is the difference between an image that's loaded in a layer versus an Pixel layer?

  13. Yes, I did check that option.  I see in the list that there are Akvis plugins listed, but you're right, the Decorator plugin isn't listed.  I wonder, if plugins follow a specific interface and implementation, why some work, and others don't.  To work as a plugin, the code has to conform to certain requirements.  So why would Affinity Photo, which recognizes and uses those interfaces and implementations, only recognize some of them?

  14. What is the best way to get a Photoshop plugin to actually work?  I've had one that I have used quite frequently over the years in Photoshop, but now that I'm using Affinity Photo, I'm finding this specific plugin doesn't seem to want to do anything.  The .8bf file is in the correct folder, but still it doesn't show up under the Filter menu option.  Is there something else that is needed to be done to get it to work?

It is the Akvis Decorator plugin in case you're curious...

  15. I see that people have requested a line simplify or smoothing functionality, which I wholeheartedly approve of, but some additional point handling would also be useful.  Such as being able to align selected points, make points equidistant from each other, etc...  If you approve and add the line smoothing and simplification, please add additional point handling as well.  Pretty please...
