I vote for keeping them as separate, focussed apps.

I believe that if one app did everything, it would become a consumer product.

A designer is a bit of a vague term and covers so many disciplines, but professionals are largely specialists in their fields. If you imagine ADesigner as being aimed at illustrators and creative conceptualisers, and APublisher being aimed at layout, DTP , then you understand why ADesigner doesn't have drop caps, master pages and paragraph styles, and why APublisher probably won't have the artistic brushes and warp mesh tools – they're just not used by the same disciplines.

I'm a bit bummed by the current poor PDF exporting of ADesigner, but I realise that it's aimed at exporting images to be placed on websites and in brochures – not actually exporting complete websites and brochures. I'm quite certain that APublisher is going to have awesome PDF export abilities because that's the tool to create print-ready documents that will need soft proofing, bleed & cropmarks, custom compression and so on.

Sure you can make a simple z-fold flyer in Illustrator because it supports multiple pages, but have you ever tried making a 16 page brochure in it? It's possible, but it will drive you absolutely insane, guaranteed! Adobe has lost it's "tool for the job" focus and has left us with over engineered "Jack of All Trades" that have us all so desperate for new alternatives like Affinity's products.

Let's not drive Affinity in the same direction as Adobe – it will only hurt us when we [again] find ourselves looking for fresh new products in 10 years time.

Rest assured, we are reading all the posts, we are taking on board everything that is being said and we do care an awful lot about how you feel about the program and about the direction we're going in.

We've tried to be very honest and upfront at all times about what's coming - the only thing that we can't do is put set dates on things because as soon as we start saying 'before Christmas' for features (for example) then it starts down a road of problems:

    - If the feature is definitely not going to be ready, then the user gets let down and feels disappointed that their expectations were not met, especially if they see some other feature they felt wasn't as important getting finished.
    - If the feature is nearly ready but not quite then the developer feels under pressure to release within the time frame given and then we get a suboptimal version of the feature or tool, which is not what we want to release to you, and is not what you wanted to receive either!

We've got so many ideas in addition to those on the roadmap document and all of them will come over time - and we'll be trying to make them all reality as fast as we can :)  As Miguel correctly says, some features actually rely on others, some require one piece of technology to be in and working before work can start on them. Sometimes you may be surprised about the order that features appear in, but there's usually a very good reason behind them - and it's not that we've picked some crazy order, it's just that they were dependent on each other. For example, in order to get multiple pages/artboards to draw on screen we need to do many things, but one of them is that I need to make some changes to the OpenGL presentation layer that gets the rendered document image to appear on the screen and in doing so, I will end up with a working canvas rotation feature as a by-product. You may well find therefore that canvas rotation will appear in a beta version before artboards appear, but that doesn't mean we prioritised it - it's that the order of things is not always as clear as it may seem. My personal list of things I'd like to see next is: Corner Tool, Artboards, Symbols, Distances and Snapping improvements, SVG slice export, Mesh Fills... so yes, they're very high on my own list...

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi!

I want to share with you this small set of pencils.
Some of these tools feature Angle (Tilt) variance but you need a tablet that support it.
Don't have so much inspiration today to add some samples, but will do it for sure later

This set doesn't work on iPad because required settings are not yet there.
It will work with proper textures once the matching of iOS/Desktop version has been completed.

    Hope you'll enjoy it!
    Happy sketching!

    UPDATE

Just uploaded a v1.1 with these two new pieces

    Some things to know...

This new release works with MAS versions of Affinity range, but to have proper tilt dynamic latest Beta of AP or AD is needed.
Special thanks to Andy Somerfield for custom ramps...

Paekke reacted to William Cartwright in Hide Mask Selection (aka Hide Marching Ants)
First let me say how impressed I am with Affinity Photo. I have been a Photoshop user since it was released about 25 years ago. I'm happy to have explored the beta and be among the early adoptors of Affinity Photo.

Getting used to interface difference is always a part of migrating from one software to another. I understand that.

One feature I use constantly (or would were it available) is to hide the mask selection (aka hide the marching ants) when image editing. In Photoshop this was easily done hitting [command H]. I gather this command is used for other purposes in AF, and there is not current keyboard alternative.

Adding this feature would rank very high on my list of feature requests.

Thank you for all the work making such an outstanding and exciting product!

    All the best,

    Bill

Paekke reacted to Ben in Designer Vs. Sketch and Photoshop: Article by Tom Koszyk
I'm wondering how the snapping and distance/measurement features hold up when your design gets complicated.  I've used similar looking stuff in Pixelmator and Photoshop, and it quickly becomes a hinderance as soon as you have a few objects on the spread.

So, while all the videos I've seen show wonderfully simple examples of using the snapping and distance tools in Sketch - they only ever show three or four shapes.  How does it scale when you have 100, and you want to move something accurately?  Is it just as good then?

We've tried to be more restrictive with our snapping features to stop them fighting against what you are trying to achieve.  I'm also going to look at the distance/measurement tool very soon, and this will work closely with the snapping logic.  So, my real question is - are we doing the right thing with our snapping candidate approach, or has Sketch solved all the problems?

He mentions he's using the transparency tool on images - that was broken in the released Mac App Store version but fixed by the first beta we released the other day... :)

I read his article and thought it was very good too :)  We've got a long way to go, but it's important to note that Designer was built to do everything really well - but we only had time to fully develop the illustration tools prior to launch and we're now trying to move on to developing the UI design tools and professional print capabilities now - so we'll get there :)

Some applications display the glyphs only for Normal/Regular font or better said -- non-italic ones. It would be very convenient if Affinity software displays the glyphs from ALL members of the typeface family because, especially for Macedonian users, there are some specific glyphs for our language in italic fonts.

    Hey guys,

I tried the dashed line technique as well, but I could not overcome the problems. Better dashed line support was already requested here:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/6973-dashed-line-update-post-12/

But here’s another idea. Go for the Text on a Path option:
Create a circle. Use the Artistic Text Tool to put text on the circle. Select a font and type <Bullet Glyph> <Space> …, until you have the desired number of circles on your path. Then select Justified All, adjust the red wedges and the baseline offset. I used the bullet glyph of Arial in my example file, but be aware, that these glyphs are usually not perfect circles. For perfect results you may have to create a custom font of your own. Copy the circle, scale it and remove unwanted glyphs. Repeat and adjust. When you’re done, you can convert your text to curves. Not the perfect method, but the only one I can think of …  :)

    Cheers,
    Alex

I was curious about what the difference might be between the Gray option in PS and the Master option in AP so I did a simple test.  I stress that this is a simple test and does not allow for the more complicated use case you are dealing with.  Nonetheless, I concluded that, within the parameters of my test, the two options are essentially the same.  I'd be interested to know how your needs differ to try to isolate what the differences are between PS and AP.

Here is a link to a document that explains the test that I did.

Paekke reacted to MattP in Precise Clipping
    Hi Paekke,

It's a setting I added because something was annoying me... In a lot of vector editors (try this in Illustrator, for example), if you make a red circle then draw a yellow circle inside it (i.e. the red circle clips the yellow circle) you'll get a little bit of red showing through on the antialiased edge of the yellow in the areas where it is clipped by the red circle. The option to enable 'precise clipping' was added so that we would not produce this visible artefact, but it is slightly slower to composite than the traditional method, so is disabled by default but available if you ever want it. At export we always go through the 'precise clipping' code path so that the results are always as good as we can manage, irrespective of what the view drawing setting is.

In normal use, it's not something you'd normally notice - unless you knew to look out for it - but take a look at this (admittedly rather extreme) example to see the difference:

Paekke reacted to Dave Harris in Publisher hope release 2016
That reaction is why we try not to give out dates. Although I don't think we ever said Publisher would be launched this year. We did say the public beta would start towards the end of this year, with the product available to buy from the Mac App Store next year. That available to buy is what I was referring to in the post you quoted, and hasn't really changed: it's still next year. Whether the public beta makes this year remains to be seen; it's still possible, but time is ticking away so I am no longer saying this year for that, even tentatively.

I used the word "hope" in my post out of habit. Our policy is to avoid giving, or even implying, guaranteed release dates.

Whether Designer is usable for professional work depends on exactly which features your particular professional work needs. Everyone has their pet must-have features, and they aren't the same features for everyone. For some it's printing, for others it's multiple pages, for others it's art boards, for others it's better guides and snapping, for others it's arrow-heads, for others it's vector mesh warp, for others it's Pantone colours, for others it's PDF/X, for others it's customisable shortcuts. On the other hand, some people are using Designer professionally right now, and have been for months. What we do, we generally do pretty well, and over time we will cover more and more use cases.

No-one from Serif is thinking 2017. We need it earlier than that. That said, we've been actively developing PagePlus on Windows for over 25 years, and I expect we'll be adding to the Affinity apps long after 2020. We're in it for the long haul.

Meanwhile, we'll release Publisher as soon as we can. We know some of you are waiting eagerly (if not always patiently).
