  1. 1. Use the appearance panel to apply a series of strokes to an object…

    For example: Black 1mm, Red 3mm, Black 5mm

    2. Ensure that Scale with Object is turned on for all of the 3 strokes.

    3. Copy and Paste Style to a number of target objects of varying sizes.

    Result: Only the stroke which was selected most recently is scaled in the ratio of the source object to the target object.

    If the inside stroke was selected, it can grow so large that it covers the other two.

    Conversely if the outer stroke is selected, it can shrink so as to disappear behind the middle stroke.

    If the source object is a line, then the scaling factor can be huge: in my GIF 5mm -> 1635.7mm


  2. 1. Create a new document and add 100 pages.
    2. Expand the Pages panel to fill the entire screen.

    Result: On the default thumbnail size of Medium, the pages are shown as a grid, filling the whole panel.

    3. Change the thumbnail size to Small.

    Result: The pages are shown as a column, filling only a narrow slice of the available space.

    This was mentioned way back during beta testing, but didn't get comment from Affinity developers…


  3. If you expand the Pages panel to fill the whole screen it will list the pages as a grid (rather than a single column). On my modest screen I can view ~130 pages with medium size thumbnails.

    That should make all but the biggest moves doable without scrolling.

    Unfortunately there seems to be a bug: if you switch to small page thumbnails they are always shown as a list, even if the panel is wide enough to show multiple columns.

  4. There is currently no short convenient way to do what you are asking.

    The workarounds in earlier posts are useful to know, but dragging a freehand lasso (or clicking a polygon lasso) is the tool that is available for now.

    Wrong wrong wrong - ignore all that!

    Select a node on the inner circle of the O and hit Ctrl+A to select all the inner nodes.

    A second press of Ctrl+A will select all the nodes of the entire shape.

  5. From previous conversations with Ben, who developed the feature, I can say that it is not possible. 

    Affinity is not a 3d program, and has no understanding of the objects created on the isometric grid. It merely applies the distortion when the fit to plane button is clicked, and assumes that the user knows what they are doing. 

    I asked whether Affinity could record which plane shapes were on, so that changes could be made, but it was pointed out that a single shape may be drawn so that it lies on two or more planes. So what is recorded in those cases?

  6. I don't know why I enjoy these as much as I do!

    • Why did you start doing this?
    • How many have you done?
    • How long does a map like this take?
    • What are the different stages? I guess there is some research and planning before you even hit Affinity Designer?
    • What tools in Affinity make this easy / difficult?
    • Do you work on a grid? Is it square or do you need custom angles?
    • What do you do with the finished maps? Nothing / Print them (really big?) / Send them to the appropriate authority?

    Feel free to answer all / some / none of the above :)


  7. Fire is generally bright - often very bright! Your fire falls in the mid range of values in your image.

    Fire is also a light source, so to paint it realistically you need to light everything that the fire would illuminate, and cast shadows across the object too.

    Fire is also translucent, as is smoke.

    Painting realistic fire is very hard!

    Painting realistic fire into a daylight photo of a complex subject like a deer is very very hard!

  8. I can think of 3 other ways, but they are all work-arounds which are a bit clunky…

    1. Expand stroke, Boolean add to merge the 3 pieces, then use any method of obtaining transparency.
    :( No longer a path with a stroke, but a shape, so much harder to edit.

    2. Add a curves adjustment and set the max value of the alpha channel to 50%

    3. Use a pixel mask filled with 50% Grey

    Personally I'd use Alfred's method and just group the line!

  9. Hmm... fde101 don't think you are correct about this.

    Usually you can use the width value in the Transform panel to set the length of a horizontal line (or height for vertical). But there is no way to easily set the length of a diagonal line.

    So in isometric mode this doesn't really work either since 2 planes are generally on the diagonal.
