  1. Hi Guys Many thanks for your replies. I have now reset my permissions using this method https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203538 which involved typing this into terminal: diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u` The one that you mentioned R C-R doesn't appear to be possible in Sierra Unfortunately I am still having the same issues. I have also checked the files that I am trying to open using get information and they do show that I have 'read and write' permissions it seems strange that all my other software is working just fine. I am only having issues with the Affinity ones!! I have tried the latest Beta and thats not working for me either Any other ideas?! Cheers Dave
  2. Hi there, Now I am having the permissions error when opening files. I am currently resorting to logging in as another user which isn't ideal Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance Dave
  3. Hi just bumping this in case anyone has any suggestions Many thanks in advance Dave
  4. Hi MEB, I have just tried logging in on as a different user and all is working just fine. Do you have any suggestions of thing to try on my regular user account? Many thanks in advance Dave
  5. I will try running it from a new user account at the weekend... I've had a little too much excitement for one day ;)
  6. Woah that was scary! I ran first aid, it discovered some issues so I ran it from recovery mode. First aid failed and told me to back up my files. I then tried restarting my mac and it wouldn't restart, then tried restarting in recovery mode and it didn't recognise my hard drive only the boot camp disc! So I shut down my laptop and had some lunch and restarted and thankfully it started up. So now I have just saved my work files onto a portable hard drive (they are now backed up on crash plan, time machine and a separate hard drive). AD is still not working...but...that's fine I'm glad I didn't just lose my hard drive :) I've just ordered disc warrior so I'm hoping that might help. Thanks for your advice Dave
  7. Hi There, I have posted a few comments recently about issues I'm having with Affinity Designer, but I thought I would put them all in this post: --------- Can't Save - Error Message - You Don't have permission to Save in that location Can't import brushes - Error Message - Unexpected Brush Format I have made sure that I am importing the raster brushes in the pixel persona and have tried right-clicking in the finder and choosing open with Affinity Can't place Images - I go to File / Place… then choose an image and hit ok but the image doesn't load and I am unable to place it -------- To try and remedy this I have done the ol' restart and shut down and re-set the p-ram. I tried resetting the preferences and re-installed Designer and even updated to the latest version of Sierra. My system specs are Mac OS Sierra 10.12.3 Macbook Pro Retina (mid 2012) 2.6GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024MB Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 I'm not sure what is causing any of this I'm sure it can't be happening to too many people because this is making Affinity designer unusable for me. If any one has any idea what is causing these problems please let me know Cheers Dave
  8. I am having the same problem, I can't import any brushes I have tried Daub brushes and Frankentoons, in both Designer and Photo. I have made sure that I'm importing raster brushes in the pixel persona. I have done the ol' restart and shut down and re-set the p-ram. I tried resetting the preferences and re-installed Designer and even updated to the latest version of Sierra. Any ideas what could be causing this?! My system specs are Mac OS Sierra 10.12.3 Macbook Pro Retina (mid 2012) 2.6GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024MB Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers Dave
  9. Have you guys tried hej stylus. It's pretty neat and adds system wide smoothing to mouse/stylus movement which makes it really useful for drawing apps. It takes a couple of minutes to get used to it but it works really nicely for me and is a handy workaround whilst we're waiting for the affinity team to implement it in the app. http://hejstylus.com Edit. Hmmm now that I'm playing with it more it seems not to be registering my strokes 100% of the time... but when it works it's great ;) maybe best to wait til the a few of the bugs get squashed.
  10. Still having some issues with this. It's definitely not an Affinity issue as I'm also having the same problem with Numbers I tried the Font trick without success but I am now trying 'resting Home Directory Permissions and ACLs' using the instructions found here: http://www.macworld.com/article/2978282/os-x/when-save-as-says-you-dont-have-permission.html Seems to be working so far… so fingers crossed :)
  11. hey there, grrr… still getting this permissions problem. If I do a Parameter RAM reset it starts working again for a while, but then in eventually craps out again and I have to restart my laptop which is more than a little annoying ;) Any solutions or ideas would be much appreciated. cheers
  12. Hi There, I managed to find the solution. I have Reset my Parameter RAM (by restarting my mac and holding CMD-ALT P R) and that seems to have done the trick…PHEW!! I hope this helps someone else too Kind Regards Dave
  13. Hi There, Please help. I can't open any of the Affinity Designer files that I have created or save new ones I keep getting Permissions errors (see attached screen grabs). I've tried opening them in both the latest App Store Build (1.5.1) and the latest Beta (1.5.2 beta 3) I am running El Capitan 10.11.6 I've attached the errors that i am receiving I have tried pressing Control whilst opening and clearing everything but that hasn't worked. And I have restarted my laptop multiple times. I've currently got multiple live jobs that are using designer that I am currently unable to work on so it's very urgent. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind Regards, Dave PS I can open the dowloaded sample files from the intro screen
  14. I really don't want it to seem like I'm not a fan of Affinity Designer. I love it. It makes vector work so much quicker. But I really want/need to be able to share the vector graphics that I create in it as vector graphics to people still using illustrator :) So… I have kinda given up on .EPS and have just tried exporting a test file as a PDF and the good news is that it seems to allow blending modes to stay as vector when opening in illustrator. Transparency is still rasterised, though, when exported from Affinity Designer BUT if I export a pdf with an alpha mask from Illustrator it seems to import ok into Designer. But it might be a rasterised mask. here is a link to the test file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/b14zdgolgzgbh7r/transparency_mask_ai.pdf?dl=0 So… would/could/should it be possible to export as a pdf and retain transparency gradients without rasterising? If so that would be great!! Many thanks for your thoughts in advance. Dave
  15. Hi Dave, Thanks for taking a look at the file. I have also done some more tests the issues that were catching me out were the transparency and the blend modes. I was a little confused because when I export an EPS from illustrator and reopen it in illustrator the transparency and blend modes are still vector, but I am assuming that when illustrator exports EPS it does it in a way that enables the transparency and blend modes to be only reinterpreted in illustrator? But when opened in another package these effects are not supported? So… to ensure that a recipient using illustrator will be able to receive purely vector artwork the artwork must only be created using flat colours and gradients. Any usage of transparency or layer blend modes such as multiply, add, screen etc will cause that section of the artwork to be rasterised.
  16. Hi Dave, Yep the eps opens fine in Designer. But If I send the file to anyone not using Designer, which unfortunately is still the majority of the design community (for now ;)) , they will be opening a version with rasterised gradients. I have uploaded a test file here https://www.dropbox.com/s/a7xikihqqw26iib/head_test.afdesign?dl=0 It is part of a larger illustration that contains gradients and transparency gradients. When exported as either a SVG or an EPS there is a fair amount of rasterisation that occurs. Any thoughts would be most welcome. But unfortunately i'm headed off on for a few days. Will be back onwednesday. Many thanks in advance Dave
  17. hi safoster71, I think that the reason that you can't edit the gradient is because it has been rasterised and is now a bitmap image. It does still look like the gradient but if you scale it up by 300% you will see that it gets pixellated. So imagine if you sent a client a logo with that gradient and they need to increase it to the size of a billboard, then the pixellation would become very noticeable. Yes, you or the client could redo the gradient in illustrator in that instance. But if you have created a complex illustration featuring many gradients it would soon become quite time consuming to update your exported file in Illustrator to convert it back to a 100% vector image that your client can then rescale without fear of reprisals. I have tried exporting as a SVG which seems to handle gradients a little better but there is still rasterisation of some elements and I don't have time at the moment to investigate further I am going to be away for a few days, but any input would be most welcome Dave.
  18. Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply. But as a freelance designer I work with agencies on a daily basis that only use Adobe products… so… it would seem that I can't create artwork in Affinity Designer and supply it to my clients in a format that they can use as 100% vector artwork. This would be especially problematic in corporate identity work where I would expect to supply my clients with a set of vector logos that they can then use for a wide range of applications from business cards to billboards without worrying about any image quality repercussions. If I understand you correctly I could not do this from Affinity Designer because any of my clients opening the logo in any Adobe products would receive an essentially rasterised logo? And therefore it would not be advisable to resize it? Is that the case? many thanks in advance Dave
  19. Hi There, Just wanted to check that I'm not missing anything here. I have just finished an illustration that is to be used on the side of a van, and the printer has asked for an eps so they can resize it as large as they need. Which in Illustrator wouldn't be an issue but I have just discovered that Affinity Designer will rasterise my gradients to ensure image fidelity. Which means that I will need to supply the artwork at full size in this case approx 1500mm high with rasterised gradients @ 300 dpi which creates a huge file. So… in this case is I am assuming that it's safest to supply the artwork as a bitmap (png or jpeg)? Obviously the beauty of vector graphics has always been that you can supply a file that can be scaled up to any size without any worries about image quality!! So in illustrator I can create logos and illustrations with gradients and save them as .EPS or .AI and release them into the wild, safe in the knowledge that my clients can blow them up as large as they like without there being any issues. In my experience that isn't the case with Affinity Designer and means that it's essentially vector until export at which time all of that vector goodness gets rasterised. Which means that the exported files have the same size restrictions as a bitmap file. Please someone tell me it ain't so :( Dave
  20. i can't believe i didn't try that first :)
  21. Just a quick note to say that you don't need to use two paths for this. If you type it all on one path around the circle and then drag the red triangle back over the text it will split the text into the top and bottom half automatically. You can then drag the baseline slider to adjust the baseline shift which will snap nicely to descender, baseline, x-height and ascender. It's great!!!
  22. Cheers matt, Re bake corners, it made sense to me, but I do dabble with some 3D packages so that might be why, but I'm figuring that "freeze corners" might work or "convert to curves" the same as in your smart shapes (?!) options. in the meantime on the selection outline hiding front I've just figured out that if you press space at any time you access move mode and the selection outline disappears. You can also do that whilst messing around with the effects sliders, which is quite a handy workaround :) thanks again Dave
  23. Really great job on the text to curve implementation. i love how you can easily split text into the upper and lower sections of a circle… and how you can resize the circle (by clicking and dragging a corner point) without rescaling the text… both are fantastic timesavers :) Also really liking the corner tool. I noticed that you can bake all corners on a shape but wondered if it's possible to just bake selected corners if necessary?! One final thing… is it possible yet to switch off the selection outline when adding an effect. For example when I add a drop shadow or an inner shadow or a blur it would be really handy if the selection outline disappeared whilst i am moving the sliders so that I can see exactly how the final effect will look. The same way that changing the stroke colour is currently implemented. once again fantastic job everyone
