  1. Adobe Fireworks users are desperate for a viable alternative after being left high and dry by Adobe. Affinity could clean up with a few additional features in Designer. A simple non-destructive perspective tool would be a good starting point .... Check out the Adobe Fireworks forum someone from Affinity and you'll see desperate Fireworks users clinging onto the software and trying to keep it working even though Adobe have not updated it at all since 2013.

Overall I agree. I did say “being a more legitimate competitor” with no predictions as to how much the inclusion of the features that are topic of this thread would impact Designer’s standing. Only that it would be positive, and I stand by that. I wouldn’t however say no to those you mentioned either.

Without a even a basic perspective tool its nothing more than a toy ....

Except it's not there (well except basic shear). There is a free trial available, so it's not like this is a secret that people can only discover after making the purchase.

Of course it would be a nice addition for many users, but the complaint that it's "essential" doesn't hold water. If it is truly essential then people would pay the price it demands from one of the "big" players and wouldn't be here.

I'm just happy to have something workable, easy to use and that doesn't cost hundreds of pounds a year.

If you have to pay a sh*t load of money to Adobe because of core missing features in Affinity then that means it's essential to a hell of a lot of people. A basic perspective tool is a no brainer...

Genuinely curious to know why you are choosing to use both? If Illustrator does everything you need and Designer doesn't, why take the pain of switching back and forth? Why even buy Designer in the first place when it lacks an essential feature for your work?

The point is people want to drop Adobe but with essentials missing from Affinity Designer they just can't at this point.

For me - I can knock stuff up loads quicker in Affinity via Publisher and Studiolink which total genius - I really hate having to use Illustrator, it's slow and just not nice to use in comparison, I just need it for a few missing basics such as vector distortions, Blob brush, simplify paths, perspective grid, easily create fancy borders, 3d, real vector brushes, Im sure theres a few other things that I can't think of off the top of my head - I don't want to use it but I have no choice if I need to crack on and get stuff done

We bought Designer, Photo and Publisher in the hope of a few missing features being forthcoming, but me personally I still use Fireworks CS6 95% of the time due to the lack of perspective tool and one or two other missing features in Designer, I also keep a copy of Adobe illustrator CS6 installed because of the great interoperability  between Fireworks, for example I can copy and paste vectors between the two apps if I need to use the warp tools in Illustrator for example. Fireworks has some extensions for opening, importing and exporting SVGs but they are not 100% reliable, so occasionally I sue Designer top open/edit/export SVGs.

A simple skew tool like Fireworks has  that allows you to drag a corner for a perfect perspective effect would be a game changer for Designer IMO, add some common warp tools like arc, arch and fisheye  as well and Adobe would be under serious threat.

Maybe, but do keep in mind that some "under the hood" improvements & fixes apply to all the Affinity apps so they may go unnoticed. For example, for the Mac 1.9.x versions of both AP & AD they claim they made substantial performance improvements in typography & assets, improved PDF import handling, etc.

Yes, but we're talking about essential missing features that people have been asking for for years, a basic non-destructive perspective tool is a bog standard requirement.

That's what this plain vector distortion thread and request is all about, namely keep everything as plain vectors then, also when exporting as SVG/PDF and other supported vector formats.

Hard to tell if that's maybe a reason for it, aka some possible discrepancies in the underlayed vector generation engine. - Though I don't think (hope) that's the reason why vector distortions aren't yet available, instead it may be a matter of missing left time & resources to implement that, so it probably isn't on their first parts to do agenda, so to say in a similar fashion like APub doesn't yet support footnotes and co etc.

For sure Designer is at the bottom of Affinity's priorities, they had the iPad app, then Publisher and the new Studio Link feature. Affinity Photo for desktop has definitely seen more progress while Designer has been neglected IMO.

No, it's not useful at all. Show me how you distort text and export it so I can use it in a workflow for laser cutting or for CNC. Or how you export this as EPS/SVG that way so stockpages will accept it as vector.

If you need vector, you need vector - not a pixel image in whatsoever high resolution.

In some scenarios/uses output to high-res bitmap is sufficient and then you can keep the native Affinity file for further editing if needed. It really depends on the use,  I think what you mean it it's no good for your particular use, some people may not have been aware of the Live Perspective tool and may actually find it useful to retain some kind of editability inside Affinity app of sorts.

I think it's just a misunderstanding, technically it is rasterising the element - you cannot export it as a vector. Behind the scenes it's keeping the original copy which is then re-used for any changes, making it "live".

OK I see, You can effectively retain editability inside the Afffinity app using the Live Filters, but when you export it will rasterize ...

So, if your final export format needs to be a scalable vector its a problem. If your highest quality requirement for export format is as a high res bitmap then it's still very useful to retain editability inside the Affinity App if you need to return and edit further...

I wish people would verify before posting😡. Right..... I guess if they had that function, they would have included it in designer.

I have all three apps Publisher, Photo and Designer and I can use the LIVE Perspective tool in Photo and it does NOT rasterize the object.  One you have all three apps you can launch Publisher and the Studio Link feature enables you to switch between Affinity Photo and Designer features from within the one app, so you get the best of both worlds.

Maybe the person who's calling me a liar is accessing the Perspective tool from the top menu, that will rasterize the object! - However, the LIVE Perspective (note the word LIVE) tool is accessed from the bottom of the Layers panel in Photo and it is non-destructive.

Once you have all three Affinity apps  you can use the combined features of both Photo and Designer and you can use the live perspective tool on text, shapes and vectors and they are NOT rasterized .....

The person who thinks they know better, is actually the person who doesn't know what they are talking about here....

....and yes it's strange that they put a non-destructive perspective tool in a photo editor and did not include it in Designer ....

Here's how you access live filters In Photo:

I think most people here are looking for vector transform. It is a useful feature for raster though 👌🏻

The live perspective tool in Affinity Photo is non-destructive. Text, vectors and shapes and their properties are still editable after applying it - access it from the liver filters icon at the bottom of the layers panel in Affinity Photo.

  12. There is a Live Perspective filter in Affinity Photo that can do this... If you haven't already it might be worth purchasing Affinity Photo and Publisher, then you can switch between Photo and Designer with StudioLink and get the best features from both apps combined... You just launch and work from within Publisher and seamlessly switch switch between Designer and Photo ..
