I am wondering if any further improvements are planned for the crop tool?

One trick I enjoyed from PS is proportionally cropping by holding the "alt" key, I noticed that as of betas 1.5.x  that this is still not possible.

Hopefully the gif demonstrates what I am referring to.

decimate555 got a reaction from Jowday in Editing text ending confirmation button
Hello, I've noticed the Affinity suite programs lack a dedicated text ending of edit mode button (not sure what to really call this)… for example when editing text, I have to either press the ESC key every time to get out of editing mode, select the move tool directly from the tools bar or select another text box to edit. (pressing the move tool shortcut key while in editing mode will simple input the "V" character)
Something like what Photoshop has works really well and it's more of a intentional action and purposeful function when using a dedicated button on the control bar made specifically for it, with Photoshop, they also have a keyboard shortcut for it if not using the UI (command + enter / control + return)… but for Affinity that keyboard combination instead turns the text in the box into curves which is not the desired result, I just simply want a purposeful action that lets me know I'm out of editing mode and the containing box itself is selected, not the text.
Also I just find it odd when done editing text in a box and I press the ESC key it applies the text changes and selects the container object, when the expected behavior of pressing the ESC key is to cancel editing the changes altogether, however the Affinity programs instead confirms the changes seemingly the reverse approach to the canceling behavior the ESC key was formally designed to do on a keyboard.

InDesign deals with this a whole lot better, taking the unit of measurement into account when working with increments.
For instance, if you are using inches, clicking a down or up arrow on a measurement goes in increments of 1/16 inch. If I switch to Picas, the same function now works in increments of 1 point.
It bugs me right now, for example, in the Tables panel when working in Picas the increments are not even points but like 1.2 points.

    Hello…
I enjoy using the arrow keys to quickly jump numbers on the value fields… however to pick one example, with Publisher the bleed setting default increments for setting up bleed using the keyboard arrows jump complete inches at a time, MOST of the time it's quite unrealistic for bleeds to be whole inch increments unless possibly one is creating gigantic billboard art or something related. I'd suggest 1/8" increments for a more truer default to be more in tune to how most of the printing industry set their bleeds sizes. This would speed up setup for very keyboard oriented people like myself.
Yes, I am aware one can simply use their mouse and click into the field and type in whatever precise measurements… I'm only bringing this up for a better user experience with the software.

Has there been discussion/progress on implementing simple 1 Bit color mode for graphics within Photo? For now, pretty much have to stick with PS in order to convert my art to this mode, as of the latest version of Photo, I'm still quite shocked this is still missing, particularly for when Publisher comes out, using these graphics for certain kinds of graphics are smaller (low memory resource) and great for colorizing the graphic within the page-layout app itself as InDesign and Quark have had for years.

decimate555 got a reaction from predick in "Expand Appearance" cropped vectors
I was looking around and could not locate a way to create permanent vector shapes based on the cropped view of a vector object.

However in my specific case, I have cropped a group of stroked circles made to appear like sonic waves, I want to now make them into a single compound element, to finally round the end caps of each stroke as they should then be free from just being hidden from a crop itself.

Is there an easy way to do this task without a ton of other steps? Does an equivalent function like "expand appearance" that AI has exist for AD?

I thought "convert to curves" was it, seems like the closest thing to this, but that command does not result in the solution I seek.

    Thank you

One feature I use extensively with InDesign is the overall graphic preview while resizing an image frame which is very useful for knowing on the fly how much to shrink or expand the frame or to get an idea of how much clipping is on the image without having to resize everything out. It works by holding down the handles a second longer to activate that mode.

Has something like this already been considered for Publisher? If not, I'd like to at least put it out there as a possible feature that I know many would love.

    Thank you ABC!

That did the trick, basically to affect only the stroke or just the fill to get the see-through effect, the workaround is to treat the gradient tool as if were also transparency tool.

It would be great if the "Context" dropdown box part of the gradient tool was also a native option with the transparency tool. Another thing that would be such a timesaver without having to mess with nodes in the gradient too… although admittingly the gradient tool method offers more control.

    Cheers

I've always wondered why don't any programs implement a feature where the guidelines inverse their colors over an object to guarantee that they will be seen, kinda like the same way when text is highlighted and it auto reverses it's colors.

decimate555 got a reaction from Schubi63 in Need better indicator lock/hide layers
    Hello,

As of the latest beta (Oct 9th) I've noticed there is still a glaring usability issue when it comes to visual layer cues, particularly if a user has not visited a file in a lengthy period of time one would have to expand most grouped layers to remember what was locked or have hidden visibility. Usually when moving or doing some other edit with grouped objects or other selections, I thought this request could help…

How about some sort of faint or ghosted icon that appears to indicate that sublayers exist with hidden visibility or locks that are active when the layer is collapsed?

    Thank you!

I just tested this as of latest beta 1.5 (b2)… does not work yet, although quickly accessing the guides manager this way would be very useful.

May I add that it would also be very useful to include some way to make the guideline opposite orientation (e.g. vertical to hortizontal) by holding down a key (option?) while dragging into a document in real time. This would save some effort having to avoid re-dragging into canvas via opposing ruler side.

    Hello,

Sorry to notice this so late in the beta process, but I'm not sure if this is by design or an oversight, but the line pressure curves control for strokes only seems to work for lines created with the pen tool, I attempted to create variable width strokes from a line created with the vector brush but it has no effect whatsoever.

I thought this would work because on the stroke palette, the option is active for me to do this, it's just non-functional, at least in this latest release.

    Thank you.

Just thought you should know that the tint slider for the colour palette when using spots has noticeably blurry text on the "Edit Global Colour" button.

I am using a non-retina 2012 imac using El Capitan, perhaps, that has something to do with it?

    Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to find the pantone # swatch used within gradients, there seems to be no way to get this kind of feedback anywhere… while you can isolate colors added to an object with a gradient, where is the pantone # info located to find later on once added in?

Also noticed when adding a spot color swatch to a gradient, it's very hard to find a specific spot color quickly within the gradient palette without a list view showing the pantone numbers.

    Hello,

I'm really liking the changes made with the now palette versions of the type features, however besides scrolling to find a font, I often know exactly what font I want to use on a project, is there a way to just manually type in the first few characters and have Affinity auto-complete my font choice?

I tried double-clicking the font selection field to hopefully activate it to character input mode, but seems the only option is to go through the dropdown menu, and find it not ideal in all instances.

I enjoyed reading the points made above regarding Photo's development, figured I'd share some of my thoughts on this…

Raw number in years of development cannot be compared apples to apples with Adobe's considering the resources vary quite differently between them and Serif, all the more reason buying Affinity software with your supporting dollars helps every little bit level that playing field even against a behemoth like PS. This will also continue capturing the attention of the news and creative blogs that helps gather even more exposure and awareness of this great software. Personally I think and I'm sure many agree it's easily the greatest photoshop replacement contender most have seriously took into consideration.

Yes, Adobe does pitch that with renting their software, you'll have access to more updates frequently with the promise of immediate new features, but at the expense of another pricey monthly bill… however what they don't tell you is that it's effectively making you beta testers now more than ever with their now ramped up release schedules as it's easier for bugs to get through (as I've noticed more of nowadays), consequently, they also created a situation where they need to schedule those updates more frequently because the customer has to feel that their monthly costs are justified. Yes, I understand bugs are a regular part of the software world and no software is really 100% bug-free. Heck, they'll throw the whole kitchen sink at you if you want ALL their software…… perhaps there are ideal customers or studios where this is suited perfectly for, but not for the majority of us.

I noticed that with the Affinity software this release situation is similar but without the subscription commitment and without the risk of having your files held hostage if you stop making the ongoing payments… you buy the software and you can "choose" whether you'd like to be a beta tester to get a peek of new features and bug fixes, or just stick with the current version if it works for you just fine. It's great not having something like that annoying (and required) adobe cloud utility using up resources and nagging about updates… oh, and heaven forbid you forget your adobe login on that 11th hour when it has to authenticate or your internet connection decides to take some shuteye.

Photo is VERY impressive for a version 1 release as we all know, the continuing requests from pros to Serif shows that clearly many are upset at Adobe's future direction, but also that the tides are changing for creative software and Adobe's tools while mature are looking tired and many are ready and willing to completely move away from their trusted tools of many years for something that is fresher, works smarter and faster, while not all the features are there yet as many would like, with every release there's a new group of people it will reach where it's finally good enough to make the switch, for others it will take much longer… but for now I like many, are only one major feature or two away from finally pulling the Adobe plug.

There are many other points I haven't mentioned, I agree the Adobe Cloud will continue to be perfect for most people's needs and in it's arena it's amazing in it's own right. With that said, I'm already noticing some of my creative colleagues get excited over the prospect of excellent alternatives for their art/graphics needs from smaller shops… such as Sketch which is more specialized and excellent for it's suited purpose.

    Hello,

One feature request and one usability suggestion for the crop tool in Photo.

    1) When cropping with the tool, I often change my mind and revisit cropping multiple times during a project, I've grown very used to using the escape key for just about everything with Photo (as the deselect command+D is still inconsistent too with vectors), yes you can press 'cancel' to exit operation, and I found pressing a tool shortcut or clicking on a tool will also cancel crop command, why can't escape key also work? Seems to work for everything else? Less mousing, the better, I always say. :)

    2) Can Photo also include a "snapping" option checkbox for the crop tool? This would make things sooooo much faster and precise when trying to trim art with clear boundaries (like a photo with a fake picture frame, etc.)

    Thank you!!!!!!

    Hello,

I've noticed for example that when importing colours and using list view, the names of the swatches are presented nicely, however when scrolling through a very long list of swatches and one does not remember the list order for specific colors, it's quite a chore to scroll up and down long lengths.

Would you consider also introducing a "search" box so one can simply type the swatch name they are seeking?

Somehow I overlooked the fact the mask thumbnail can simply be clicked on to return to the normal view, very good to know!

But as mentioned on my original post, the toggle would be still an expected behavior for a user holding down option-click on the mask thumb, as the option-click key on the thumbnail doesn't have an existing function when in masked view mode it couldn't hurt to implement it anyway?

decimate555 got a reaction from anon1 in Why doesn't mask view mode toggle?
    Hello,

When option-clicking on the mask thumbnail on the layers palette, it takes you to the black and white mask view mode, however this same action again does not toggle you back to normal view, why is that?

To return to normal view presently, I have to use the "escape" key to get back where I was, two different key actions to simply switch views back and forth is a bit of an interruption for working more swiftly.

    As shown in attachment.

    Thank you
