Thanks to Alfred's help on this exact same question I set my shortcut to Shift+Esc a couple of days ago.
I also wonder why this simple but useful little feature isn't on the colour picker panel. Maybe make it two little round circles instead though so there is no copyright infringement :P

Well, I wouldn't want to affect a Royal "we", but when it comes to a DAM I must actually agree, there is definitely a "need", also known as a ready market.

There isn't really anything sensible out there that allows you to tag images, manage copyrights (let's not forget that), sort on all sorts of parameters including whatever available EXIF data and even dimensions etc etc etc.  The only other option I see here is some Open Source project which could incorporate things like Graphics/ImageMagick and exiftool for image handling, but I lack the bandwidth to get that organised and keep it from getting mired in pointless politics.

Given past performance of the Affinity team which I enjoy daily with Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo* there is a high degree of confidence that whatever they dream up will be good and innovative too, and they have access to plenty of people here who would love to help with requirements gathering and alpha/beta testing (sticks up hand).  That's probably their only problem: they set the bar pretty high for themselves with AD and AP  :P - my confidence in them delivering something good is only exceeded by my impatience to see it appear  ..

    * They should really come up with some joint license - it's worth having both

For some reason, the ESC key is not associated with the Select/Deselect Layers command.
Is there a way to add it back to the shortcuts? I can't simply press ESC in the shortcut associated field as it simply closes the shortcut preference window.
I tried using an ASCII character, but it seems I can only type ALT+ followed by one character (either 2 or 7) and not two characters (27, which is the ASCII value for ESC).
    Any hint?

    Hi MIchael,

I have W10 Home, up to date (Not much choice!)
It's difficult to reproduce a hung process but my machine is a bit rubbish so it's easy for me to throw AP a task that gets the 'Affinity Photo (Not Responding)' message. Not sure if that's a valid comparison to your issue. Anyway when I Ctrl+Alt+Del while that 's going on Task Manager is slow to respond but it does respond.

My understanding is that it's not APs responsibility to respond to a Ctrl+Alt+Del request it's the OS's. If your OS isn't responding then there is no resource left for it to work with. I have 16GB of cheap RAM and have set AP to only be allowed to use 13, always leaving 2 for the OS and anything else. (you never get to use the full amount. May be worth trying to tweak that preference?

For what it's worth, I've made the switch to Photo & Designer and haven't regretted it yet. I've actually been VERY impressed with the speed and responsiveness of the Affinity development team. They're pulling off a minor miracle with what they've accomplished so far in the time span they've had.

Considering the entrenched lead that Adobe has, to see this kind of software suite come up out of nowhere and provide a very credible challenge is amazing and encouraging. I, for one, plan on supporting Affinity from now on. I've also convinced my workplace to install them both on my work computer and they've been very pleased with the results.

Does either program provide every single bell, whistle or widget that the Adobe programs have? Of course not. That's beyond foolish to expect, given the time span that Adobe has been working on them. However, to claim that the Affinity team has somehow lost enthusiasm or steam is utterly wrong. They're chugging along and are providing a wonderful product that's only improving with every point release.

    Hi Chris,

Untitled.jpg came through to the 'Save As' dialogue for a new file.
I'm pretty sure I've worked out what's going on, it's a bit of an edge case to be filed under b****y users!  :D

Because there was a warning on the latest beta about file format compatibility I take a copy of any file I want to work on so I have the original I can open with the release version just in case. So I prefixed the copy with '.71_' yip the dots the issue. A dot anywhere in the file name truncates everything to the right of it.

Interestingly as I had no idea off the top of my head how office deals with this I checked and it's ok with that char in the 'Save As'

As if characterizing anyone who disagrees with you as having their "heads in the sand" isn't?

Then by what logic do you think posting this thread would suddenly cause Serif to "wake up and go all out"?

Harpy, I could build a very long list of features which Adobe was years, if not decades, behind its competitors in delivering. Illustrator, for example, is over 30 years old and still doesn't provide dimension tools, connector lines, user-defined ruler scales...

You're expecting Serif to have matched, feature-by-feature, in 4 years what Photoshop took 29 years (after having initially been acquired by Adobe from the Knoll brothers) to become?

How long will it take? When will it happen? Nobody knows. Not even Serif. Your blustering won't make it happen.

Unless you're privy to a full accounting of its resources, you have no idea whether Serif is already "going all out" or not.

What I do know is that the Affinity applications can already serve for a lot of what I do, and I've never considered graphics software an either-or proposition anyway. There's nothing saying I'm required to use just one particular raster, vector, or page assembly program, and I don't. It's how I've always avoided mission-critical dependency on a single vendor.

But that's just me. If you can't make productive use of any raster program until it matches Photoshop tit-for-tat, well, don't. Good things take time.

harrym reacted to ms.fuentecilla in How to tell AP the images belong to ONE panorama?
Similar problems have occurred for me in the past but in the new beta the accuracy of stitching is much better. At that time the advice was to ensure greater overlaps in frames. In general it seems better to use a uniform exposure (that is manual) across a panorama sequence to avoid creating complications for an already complex process. It doesn't however eliminate problems as my post this morning under panorama artefacts reveals. There remain problems with the gradated screening and its processing out of RAW format. Apart from this AP seems to make what was once a time consuming procedure (in PS) fast and simple.

Don't overlook the importance of MEB's comment about the huge variation in the number of hardware/software configurations the Windows versions have to support. On the Mac side, there are at most a couple of dozen different hardware configurations they have to support, & most of them are limited to the old "cheese grater" Mac Pros that can use a limited number of non-OEM graphic cards, which still use the same or very similar software drivers as the OEM ones.

On the Windows side, there are hundreds if not thousands of different hardware configurations to support, plus all the different driver softwares that might be installed from various sources. So in effect, there could be hundreds of bottlenecks, each affecting some but not other Windows systems. It seems likely that it will not be a quick or easy task to find & eliminate all of them!
