[How do you connect one 'pencil tool' drawing with another?]

Hello,

 

So basically I used the 'pencil tool' to create a shape, but stopped in between before finishing it- so there are now two shapes. I started the second shape at the exact point I ended the first, and I brought it round so it should be a closed shape, but when I fill it with colour, the colour doesn't fill withIN it, it fills all around it, which means that affinity designer doesn't think it's one closed shape, but instead two separate shapes.

 

So how do I connect these two drawings together so that they are one? I've spent hours playing about with the node trying to do this, even tried grouping them together, but it just doesn't seem to work. I've attached screenshots of an example to explain what I mean.

 

I'm new to affinity designer so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated,
