Fahad Javed got a reaction from Bynah in What brush am I using?
    Hi everyone,

I have faced this issue especially when painting in Affinity Designer. If i am using multiple brushes in a single painting i cannot select them by sampling them from the paint on the canvas. Lets say if i have utilized 7 brushes in my painting, then there must be a way for me to select any of them by sampling them. This mechanism is actually available in the mypaint software that i have used a lot. In order to select a brush from a painting in my paint, you move the cursor over the brush stroke and press the 'w' key to sample and then select the brush[along with its settings] without selecting and remembering the brush from the brush panel. Here is a short video demonstrating this feature as i do many brush strokes and select those by sampling them. A similar feature should also be available in affinity designer and photo,as if we are using close to a lets say 25 brushes in a painting,do we need to remember each of them?. This feature will boost our productivity.

    Hi simgonzalo

Make use of the 'Selection Brush Tool'[] to roughly highlight the Hair and leave the strands of hairs outside,as they will be selected using 'Refine'[] option on the toolbar. Now click the 'Refine' Button and use the brush selection to highlight strands of hairs outside to apply the edge refinement algorithm and switch to 'Black and White' overlay option in the 'preview' dropdown to see how much strands of hair are selected and repeat it to get the result you want. Here is a screenshot of the selection i was able to make using this. White Color Shows the selection you have made and black here indicates unselected areas.

I have also attached the editable affinity photo file[File Name = Perfect Hair Selection - Tip.afphoto ] with the selection saved as an Editable mask. Go ahead and open and experiment with this. I Hope this is helpful for you.

Fahad Javed got a reaction from ashf in Multiple Layers for each stroke using Affinity Designer's drawing tools
Currently in Affinity Designer, when we draw using drawing tools such as Pen Tool,Pencil Tool and Vector Brush Tool, each stroke creates a new layer, which can be quite cumbersome, especially when you have a more elaborate drawing. This issue could be catered by creating a layer group and then create a stroke and then select the first layer in the layer group. Now every stroke will be drawn within the given group.

It would make an excellent productive feature if their is a preference provided for enabling or disabling this feature for drawing strokes on each separate layer. Like switching it on would allow allow all strokes to be created in a single layer and disabling it would allow the default behaviour of drawing each stroke on a separate layer. It could reside in the menu path:

    Preferences > General

the name of the preference as a sample could be 'Draw strokes on a single Layer'.

    Best Regards,

Most of Data Designers use Illustrator to create charts… except that the chart tools in Illustrator haven't been updated for 27 years!!!

There's a huge gap in the market for a chart designing tool, that is powerful, up-to-date, and easy to use. I'm fed up with Illustrator for that matter, as you really can't create anything (dynamic) except pie charts, line charts and bar charts…

We need flow charts, treepmaps, etc. I know a bunch of designers who'd switch to AfDesigner if there were chart tools included.

We don't ask for a Excel replacement, but we need/want a not-stuck-in-the-past vector tool!

    Hello everyone!

It will be nice to have some charting possibilities in designer.
I'm working in economical newspapers, and we rely on illustrator due the huge amount of charts we need to do.

    Our basic workflow is:
Excel, OpenOffice or Google Tabs -> export data to CVS or just copy paste -> illustrator
or using some web tools like http://rawgraphs.io/ to generate svg and then back to illustrator for finishing touches.

Sometimes we use D3.js (https://d3js.org/) to generate our custom charts to svg and then jump to illustrator again.
I think using some library like D3 could be the way.

It would be great argument for us to switch to Designer if we can do some better charts than in illustrator.

    Hello,

I am a graphic designer in the financial services industry. We regularly create charts and graphs for printed materials. We are stuck with Illustrator since it is the only tool we know of that will generate a chart from data that stays intact for updating and provides us with a vector final format.

Now Illustrator is okay, maybe even good. But the chart/graph tool hasn't changed much since 1990. Really. I do know. There are other programs that can make charts but that don't provide the use of Pantone colors, easy updating, and that vector format plus will easily import data from Excel or other spreadsheets. Designer looks like it can take the place of Illustrator in most cases. Why not take Illustrator's place as a charting tool too? Or you could go the extra mile and create a vector chart making application that ticks all the necessary boxes.

    Thanks.

I am really loving all the Affinity applications in including the Publisher Beta.
But what I really miss is a true full-screen mode in any Affinity program for a preview without any distraction that hides all tools, toolbars and guides with a single tap of a button(s).
It would be great to have a full-screen mode for all Affinity software, preferably with the same keyboard shortcut.
    What do you think?

By the way, Is there any reason why a true full-screen mode is not added to Affinity?

Inno setup, is one of them they can only take BMP (since that is the native Picture format on Windows). I am software developer and use the Affinity Photo to make the Inno setup page screens. (among other things). (Though PNG is getting to be the standard in most development but not all)

I am stuck on this as well, having to resort to other tools to generate the BMP. Many things still require files in BMP format which cannot be avoided.

I would like the BMP export feature also. As it is I now have to use Pixelmator to do this whereas I had hoped BMP which is a standard format, would have been available in Affinity. I left PS for Pixelmator and then Pixelmator to Affinity. Whilst there is no BMP export option, I'll have to stick with Pixelmator to do those conversions (which is a shame).

I need BMP because I have some hardware that uses BMP images in the icons.

    Ken,
What I'm doing for now is using the free Paintbrush App:
    http://paintbrush.sourceforge.net/
It's old and hasn't been updated in a while, but it works.

Export from Affinity (8 bit tiff), then open and save in Paintbrush.

    It's a hassle, but doesn't require PhotoShop

Exactly, this.  I'm creating an installer for a 2D game and it requires .bmp.  It's all challenging enough without having to stop what I'm doing because some old standard [obviously still being used] isn't supported by Affinity.

Considering how unreliable/unsafe free software can be, I don't want to have to worry about some random software with the potential for malware and corruption because Affinity isn't interested in doing something simple enough that "plenty of free tools" are giving it away at no cost.  Especially when a well known competitor on the market is capable of doing it.

I suppose saying it's not a priority irritates the $&@% out of me because, it's sort of obvious the feature you haven't included isn't a priority.  Also, the point of requesting a feature is to suggest that it's priority level should maybe trend in an upward direction.

BTW, I already owned Sketchbook Pro which is capable of exporting to bmp, and Krita (free) is also capable of exporting to bmp.

There isn't a file path for them as such.  You'd need to save your .afdesign and .afphoto files from the Home screen of Affinity using the Save option as outlined in this video: https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/tutorials/designer/ipad/#/video/272724251
As for sending a file via Bluetooth from iPad to Windows, i'm not aware of a method to do this, it might be possible with a 3rd party app.  I'm sure if anyone knows of a method they will post it

    Hi Fahad Javed,
Yes you can share a Affinity file between IOS, Windows and Mac.  You'd have to have the external drive connected to load the files and i'm not sure how external drives work with the iPad.  While wouldn't advice saving directly to the external drive (this is the same for Desktops as well). You could save the file on the iPad and then move it to the External Driver with the Files app (hopefully someone with more experience of this setup will comment).
You can't sync affinity files using iTunes, so you'd have to look at either saving to a Cloud service like iCloud and then opening the files from there or going the external drive route.

This is an excellent Resource covering affinity products and beyond. I just want to suggest that since this is the beginning of curated content on Affinity Spotlight and the content provided here is likely to grow, would it not be nice if an additional feature is added in the future where in we can download Article(s) by categories,Month, year wise etc. in to a single consolidated pdf file for offline reading?. Keep up the good work.

Yes indeed, you can open .ai files and then you have to save them in the affinity formats for this to work,we cannot save to the .ai file. You can download a sample .ai file(url = http://all-free-download.com/free-vector/download/water_color_codes_samples_colorful_grunge_brush_icons_6828859_download.html) and check the feature out. Once you open that in Affinity Designer, you get a pdf options dialog box and once you set the options and press the 'ok' button, you can edit the vector graphics and save them in a native file format like '.afdesign'.

You can also download  a sample .psd file(url = https://www.graphicsfuel.com/dload/?dlink=2017/04/3D-Comic-Text-Effect),and once you open it,notice the text is indeed rasterized. You can also open the pdf file in this zip file, and notice the text from the pdf file can be edited, the pdf file needs to have text in the first place not images in order to edit it.

Yes there are also some common features in both the apps as well like pen and node tool, shapes,Export Persona, Layer effects, Raster Brush Engine and brushes, swatches,Navigator etc.

Certainly AP is far better for photo editing. But AD does much better for vector. In addition to what has been mentioned. the vector brush used with custom textured image brushes can produce  remarkably varied and adjustable strokes. The pencil tool is quite nice for creating freehand vector shapes. While I do most work in AD, I find the few things I need from AP are worth the money I paid when I need the capabilities. I suppose you will find the same is true when you need Designer features.
