I am Adobe-free since december 2014. I keep Photoshop installed just for checking .psd files exported from AD, and for the ocasional warping. Once in a while I need to do basic video editing work (like adding a gradient map to a bunch of stock videos to make them homogenous and on-brand), but since Photoshop can handle that, I really don't need After Effects / Premiere.
Back when Macromedia was a thing, I was 99% pro-Illustrator, mostly due to FreeHand's poor interface. I guess I couldn't wrap my head around the notion of creating things with a tool developed with such disdain for aesthetics. But then when Adobe acquired Macromedia, I was really mad at Adobe for letting go the opportunity to blend both vector apps in what could have been the best vector software ever. That feed my fear of being dependant to a huge monopolistic company that seem to believe it is ok to purchase something just in order to shutting it down. Both from a market view point and an ethics view point, it was bad news not only for FreeHand users, but for Illustrator users likewise, because it gave as a glimpse of the tyrant Adobe would become. Not just a tyrant, but a lazy one too.
Good soil for the Affinity seed to grow. I was so eager to escape that I gave Pixelmator several opportunities, with no success.
BTW, I feel the same way regarding Apple. A gorgeous jailhouse, but a jailhouse anyway. I'd love to see a rising competitor make Apple focus once again on the Mac, and that can only start to happen if they stop taking users and customer for granted.

Hey everyone! This is my first post here.

In less than a year, Affinity has changed my workflow in ways I couldn't even imagine some time ago. Here it is, my first project developed entirely using Designer.

I've been thinking about what to do do that I'd want to have printed and framed and wasn't sure. But I was looking for some icons, as I'm retro-fying Mojave, and came across an Adobe Illustrator 10 icon.  I'd almost forgotten that from v1 to v10 they used Botticelli's Venus for the splash screens, icons etc. Then from CS3 onwards they thought they'd improve on Botticelli by putting the letters Ai in a square! Think they were the first major company to dumb things down. Anyway I wondered if you, rather I, could redraw the whole painting as a vector, not low poly or anything but "properly", or my version of properly.
It's probably/definitely a dumb idea as there's so many difficult parts any of which might not work. I don't know how to do half of it, plus there's so much much of it.
Anyway that what this is going to be about, a vector Botticelli's The Birth of Venus. We'll see if I manage it or make a mess of it. I'm sort of betting the latter at this point! I figured posting progress means I'm less likely to give up
I spent of few hours trying different tweaks of photos to try and come up with an OK one. I'll be changing the dirty and faded colours, hopefully a bit closer to the colours it had when new especially in places like the foliage.
I didn't really know what to start on so thought the background. So I've been working on the orange trees. You think you're doing well then you zoom out and see that you've hardly made a dent. But it's going to be like that.
Along the way I'll share any resources that I create, so here's the first one. It's an Orange tree swatch palette of 80+ leaf gradients (you'll still need more but a good start, base new ones on them as you need them and add/save those) and some orange blossoms that I put together today.
I'll post updates when as and when it has progressed enough.

    @Michelangelo_
The fact that the words "meritocracy" and "democracy" are being used here blows my mind. Even talking about what is "fair" and what is not, in this context, sounds a bit out of touch for me.
This is not a contest, neither is a competition.
    Furthermore, I would argue:
Single thread means less exposition, not more. You won't flood a forum if all your stuff is kept together, right? @BrianHermelijn creates flawless artwork across many styles, and engages in conversation with those who have a question or a comment. That is what give him whatever amount of visibility you may think he gets. Nobody "gets visibility thanks to Affinity". Is the other way around. We the users help by using it, talking about it, sharing our work and using the right hashtags offsite. Passive aggressive rhetoric rarely works.

I've been playing around with pip arrangements for the number cards. The last row in the picture is really rough. That one is me trying to experiment with an asymmetrical layout of the pips and also have different sizes. The rest of the rows are variations of cards that probably already exist in some form. Row 4 is essentially the layout a deck of bicycle cards has. Rows 1-3 are just something I quickly came up with when trying to keep the pips symmetrical and on a grid.
I'm leaning towards trying to make the last row style work since the asymmetrical aspect of it would make it easy to tell the top from the bottom of the cards. Being able to tell if the card is "upside down" would help with them being used as a tarot deck and also be fine for regular card games.
Heart, Spades, and Clubs are pretty easy to show upside down but the Diamonds are symmetrical so trying to portray them upside down would need something like the last row in the picture to convey. Or I could change the Diamonds shape to being asymmetrical too but I'm not sure I'd want to do that.
    I'll stop ranting now.... Lol.

    Really nice work.
The detail on the court cards is very nice - especially the way that the two halves are different and not just flipped - and I like the way you've grouped the symbols on the '7' cards. The use of two/three shades of colour for the suit 'pips' works well too.
I realise that this is still a work-in-progress but I have some suggestions:
    * The Spades and Hearts symbols need to be different from each other. I realise that they are a different colour but the shapes - regardless of colour - should be easily differentiated (what if someone is colour-blind?).
    * I don't know about Tarot but to use these as a normal pack of cards you need to have two colours, traditionally red and black. If you have four colours then, if someone is using them in a normal card game - e.g. solitaire, how do they know if green goes on blue or red or black?
    * Is the Fool 'flipping the bird' when upside down? (Might cause offence to some people.)
    * I think the card value text needs to be larger in size. It's just a personal thing but the text seems a little small to me.
    * Only the Hearts court cards have an extra 'splash of colour' in them. It might be nicer if the same is true for all of the suits.
All that said, it's shaping up to be a lovely set of cards. It will be interesting to see what you come up with for the card back artwork.

    Hey all,
I've been working on a deck of cards. Still trying to flesh out the main theme I want to go for but right now its sort of based on Tarot cards. Spades, Clubs, Hearts, and Diamonds are also Swords, Wands, Cups, and Pentagrams respectively like in a tarot deck. There's also 4 colors instead of 2. The idea is for this deck to also be the minor arcana of a tarot deck and later I can design a "major arcana expansion" deck that when combined with this deck would make it into a full tarot deck. The major arcana card in a tarot deck are the ones with names like "The Magician", "The Fool", "Death", "Justice", etc. The minor arcana are the 4 suits with the Ace, 2-10, and the court cards so that would be this deck. Maybe even will include a couple Major arcana as the Joker cards. Like "The Fool" and "Death" cards since most playing card decks have 2 jokers anyways.
I'm also playing around with a duality idea of each of the court cards having slightly different sides. One being normal and the other side being a bit rough or unkempt. This would make them not perfectly symmetrical which would also be good for using them as Tarot cards since a card being upside down means something different than if it is turned right side up. Most number cards can show upside down except for the diamonds so I still need to figure out that for the 2-10 of diamonds cards.
Anyways, I'm rambling on now. So what do you think? Any critiques or suggestions on the design?

TL;DR - I'm designing a deck of cards. What do you think?
