    Status: Beta Release
    Purpose: New features, fixes
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: Here

This beta version represents a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

    Fixes/Improvements:
Fixed a number of PDF import issues. Fix for Corner Tool error introduced in the last Beta (sorry...)  Fix for embedded documents not updating the host document properly when modified Fix for artboard labels not updating correctly when the names are changed in the layers panel (Metal view mode only) Tweak to the Metal view to improve performance further

    Fixes/Improvements:
Further Light UI improvements Added 'Lock'/'Unlock'/'Unlock All' and 'Hide'/'Show'/'Show All' menu items with shortcuts Fixed many symbol bugs and crashes Fix for PDF/EPS export of large rasterised areas causing visible gaps on occasions Fix for Gray8 format documents failing to draw as intended Fix for crash when copying artboards that contained symbols with text inside Fix for crash when moving compound objects inside constrained containers Fix for slices and guides not drawing correctly sometimes after a pan/zoom Custom pixel brush wet edges Fixed inability to hold shift and click in brush tools to create a straight line Fixed inability to load Procreate PSD files Localisation improvements
    * Please note that macOS Sierra has a bug in Metal with AMD graphics cards which means colour correction will not function perfectly, hence why it is disabled by default. If you have an Intel or Nvidia card then feel free to try it. This bug was fixed in High Sierra so all cards should work as expected  :)

    Status: Customer Beta
    Purpose: Fixes & Minor Improvements
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: 1.5.5 Beta 1 Here

The purpose of this version is to improve the stability of the released product. It contains no dangerous changes, only fixes and minor usability improvements. We would recommend that all users download and use this version. It should be considered more reliable than the current Mac App Store version (1.5.4)

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

    Fixes/Improvements
Controversial change to pixel documents: 100% view now maps document pixels directly to screen pixels. If you have a retina Mac you will now see 100% view showing a pixel in the document on each pixel on your display. Wireframe view mode now allows the user to select locked items by click or marquee. Basically, if you're in wireframe view and you can see it, you can now click it to select it. This makes wireframe view much more useful for toggling on/off to select specific items in the document. With rulers visible and a high-frequency input device such as a pen tablet (or a mouse in macOS Sierra) the rulers would make the document update very slowly, this has been resolved. SVG export of gradients is now more compatible with QuickLook. Stability fixes for text. Fixed bug applying OpenType contextual rules. Fix for crashes with 32bit documents on Lion and Mountain Lion. Fix for right-clicking a text object in the Text tool failing to select the current word if the user is over the caret. Improved PSD import/export of HSL adjustments. Improved PSD import of fill layers with empty stroke masks and also parse line origination data. Import badly-formed PSD files created by Marmoset. Fix for occasional crash with embedded documents. PDF export fix for Overprint flag which was not getting unset at certain times, leading to items unintentionally overprinting. Fix for system chime noise when holding Cmd+Alt+Space. Fix for layers panel showing incorrect document information when changing from Separated window mode to normal mode if multiple documents are open. Fix for some images opening and saying they are 1dpi

    Great work Matt!

One question: I have a MBP with AMD and built-in Intel graphics as well. If I click on Use Only Integrated GPU and restart, I'm still not able to select Metal for my Display setting in AD's Performance Preferences...

    I'm running macOS Sierra 10.12.5...

Besli reacted to kareldries in Affinity Designer Tutorial: centered grid layout
    Hi all,

I figured out a way to configure a centered grid design in Affinity Designer, with a custom number of columns and gutter width.

Below is a spreadsheet to calculate the required values. If you make a copy of the file to you Google Drive, you can edit the values.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1imTD6Ao3OJyS0_E-fnHTr5l9GKG9zulM4uIutVZGAnE/edit?usp=sharing

    Example values for the calculation:

    Grid width: 1170 px
    Nr of columns: 12 px
Column width: 97.5 px (= grid width / nr of cols)
    AD Gutter: 30 px
AD Spacing: 67.5 px (= col width - gutter)
    AD Document width: 1335 px (= 2*spacing + gutter + grid width)

Here's how you would use these values in AD to set up your grid.

Create a new document, use the calculated document width, 1335 px in this example.

Go to the View menu, enable 'Show Grid' and open the 'Grid and Axis Manager'

    Apply this grid manager configuration:

    - Untick 'Use automatic grid'
    - Select 'Advanced' mode
    - Untick 'Uniform' under 'Grid type'
    - First Axis spacing: 67,5 px
    - First Axis gutter: 30 px
    - Second Axis spacing: 1000px, for this example we use the document height but you can use any height you like

Add guides to the left side of the first and last gutter.

Go to 'View' - 'Guides Manager'

Add half the gutter width to both guides by appending '+15' and pressing enter.

This should be the final result.

You will end up with two additional columns on the left and right side of the document.
The reason for this is that there is no way to have a margin on the left side of your document using the grid setup.
By following this tutorial you end up with a document that contains 2 more columns, but you simply do not use them. In the export persona, you can easily set the slice to export only the part of your design you need.   In the screenshot below, I've marked the area you actually use.

Of course there is an example .afdesign file to save you the trouble ;)

    centered 1170 px 12 col grid kareldries.afdesign

Besli reacted to Patrick Connor in Affinity Photo for iPad launched at Apple WWDC
Affinity Photo for iPad – the first fully-featured, truly professional photo editing tool to arrive on Apple’s tablet – is now on sale.

We were proud to be able to launch it during the keynote at Apple’s WWDC in San Jose on 5 June – the highlight of Apple’s global product launch calendar.

If you saw that, or if you use Affinity Photo already, you’ll understand why it’s the choice of thousands of professional photographers, retouchers and editors around the world.

We think Affinity Photo for iPad redefines photo editing once again, by bringing almost all the features in the Mac version to your iPad, so you can take all that photo editing power with you wherever you go.

The new version is tailored to harness the explosive power of the iPad’s hardware and touch capabilities, and is compatible with iPad Air 2, iPad 2017, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad Pro 10.5-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch. Please note this is not the list of iPads that the App Store suggests it will work with, see this post for an explanation.

We expect this to be the biggest launch we’ve ever had and even better, Affinity Photo for iPad is priced at an introductory discount of more than 30 per cent in the App Store – so for now, you pay £19.99 / $19.99USD / 21,99€.

    1) Go to a bank and request a loan to cover two years salary for a developer
    2) Hire a developer
    3) We'll await your finished product in two years time.  Go.
