Not only does Affinity not seem to have them, it won't open them from Illustrator. I opened a design that used them, and it's showing those layers as black! : (  
I was hoping to quit Ps and Ai, replacing with Affinity Photo and Designer. But this might not be possible without support for this. Darn! I was so hopeful.

Illustrator has them, Inkscape has them (free no less), but Affinity does not.  They sure would be helpful in creating depth maps and 3D reliefs for CNC and Laser projects.

As this feature is part of PDF standard and even public domain tools like Inkscape support it, I hope that support comes in the near future!?
The lack of this feature keeps me from switching to Affinity as my only design tool...

I also wish they would implement the gradient mesh feature on Affinity Design. That would be really wonderful!

And this is two screen shots of the actual logo, versus using a larger one resized in html (not ideal). Both come from the same vector file. I don't understand why the PNG looks so bad.

That's unfortunate, I use gradient mesh often, so I'm still using Drawplus X8 and CorelDraw where necessary. 
I think users saw it as a promise because that's how it was worded. 
I mean, that pretty much reads as a promise that you won't start adding new features until a mesh fill tool has been implemented. 
It's a bit weird to portray it as though your users just totally misunderstood your post and that it wasn't intended as a promise. It sounds like you were saying "buy our product now even if these are features you are waiting for because we WILL get there eventually." You didn't use the word "promise" but that was a commitment, let's put it that way, and an unfulfilled commitment. 
Oh well, no matter. If you ever add such a feature, I'll be ready to buy. Without it, I'll stick with Corel. I'll check back in when you hit Version 3 I suppose. Thanks for the quick reply!

Does this product finally have gradient mesh, as was promised in your Version 1 roadmap over five years ago and never delivered? 

Hi guys, we'd love to have a Gradient Mesh or Freeform Gradient Tool in Affinity Designer

+1 for this feature: I could really use a mesh or freeform gradient tool.

There are plans for a Mesh Fill Tool for Designer, however, I don't think it will support the native Gradient Mesh from Illustrator, but I may as well be wrong.

Hope this helps. It will all depend on the image you're working on, but this works for what you had attached. See screenshots to follow along.
 
1. Select layer and chose FX
 

 
2. Choose gradient overlay / Click on gradient
 

 
3. Click on those colour circles at either end to select a new colour

This is my latest poem as a tribute to the late Captain Sir Thomas Moore. The image was turned into a cartoon using the GMIC extension in Affinity Photo. The poem was written in LibreOffice and imported into Affinity Publisher.

I first used Photoshop on 1997.  Twenty five years later Adobe goes to rest while Affinity is rising.
This is my first attempt  to create something in Affinity Designer.
"Darkness"  The moon was captured with a canon camera and edited in Affinity photo. The skeleton was created with an old 3D character design software. The ground, plants, and the clouds created with the Pixel Persona of Affinity Designer. 
I can not tell in a few words, how happy I am using Affinity products!

In order to exchange/import you might try to use the SVG based clipboard copy/paste or the SVG/PDF file format to get things into Designer.
