penwiper got a reaction from David in sktchy portraits
A few more sktchy posts . . . I have been busy with my garden lately and working with markers more is my excuse for being away for a while! I find myself missing AD so I need an excuse to play around more . . . fortunately I have a couple more drawings to render that I could work on today!

penwiper got a reaction from David in sktchy portraits
So I joined an app on my phone called sktchy where people submit photos to provide inspiration to others, and members also draw from photos submitted to the app.
Here are some portraits I have drawn of people there in the last week with Affinity Designer. It's a neat idea! There's obviously a wide range of talent there, but that is part of the fun.

My girlfriend took a picture of me and I created a vector-based portrait from it. It looks simple but it wasn't for me. I'm still getting used to vectors.

I think it's a great illustration! I like the detail at larger sizes, but it gets lost and somewhat "noisy" at smaller sizes... Perhaps exaggerating some features and simplifying others for smaller applications might improve legibility at that scale. I would try a simpler version with a relatively larger mouth, and much less textures for the smaller version. Remember a logo is not an illustration; ideally a logo works first as a one color design; once that is working well, start judiciously applying colors and if necessary textures. Instant legibility and identification is the goal, as well as communicating the brand's DNA, of course, so anything excess is what one of my design professors would have called "ketchup." Ketchup and watermelons don't tasty yummy :P
Great design/illustration and concept!. Hope that helps... :)

Even tho I came up in Industrial & Graphic Design, I currently do software design and development (mostly Mac & iOS).
Here's the logo for my consulting company (and self-tutorial to learn AD), Hungry Melon Studio, LLC.
I definitely got carried away with the texture layering ;)

Hi everyone. I am new to Affinity Designer. I really love drawing in flat color vectors at the moment, so this is my first attempt at using AD. I didn't realize there was anything in the help files at first so it's mostly just trial and error. The interface is fairly intuitive but I admit I am having some challenges figuring out how to keep line & fill colors consistent.
I'd love to be able to select a line or shape and simply eye-dropper from an existing one. And I can't seem to figure out how to drag colors into my swatches palette and there are a few things I'd love to see added but I'll look for a suggestion thread here :)
I really love the software already. I hope you like this. Thanks for looking!

Interesting. It's very hard to see this for me now. :-) It is like editing your own words. I will look with fresh head in morning and see, you might be right. I appreciate your feedback greatly.
When something is out of proportion I like to turn it upside down and around to see it. Even if something is physically possible and correct, doesn't not make it artistically correct. The flow of the eyes and what draws attention are very important, so this kind of thing carries weight. :)
Edit: I was thinking about shoelaces too, but the white color drew too much attention there. I still can't see it, but maybe it will be like the white and gold dress that turned blue after 15 minutes.
Edit 2: I think it can be retouched. You are correct!

penwiper got a reaction from My Strawberry Monkey in NEW! Affinity Tutorial - How to create an email signature
So, there you go. I tested it and it works brilliantly. Can one do the same thing with Outlook Express proper? I often use it online rather than with apple mail and while I was able to put in a signature image it didn't save it or show it at the bottom of a new email. :-/
But on Apple Mail this is quite frankly brilliant.
Thanks for the tutorial, it was a lot simpler than I would have imagined!
Yes, I need to update my portfolio...

penwiper got a reaction from MattP in Some random people. :-)
Here are a couple of new images I made this week.
I borrowed the pose of a celebrity and designed a new outfit for her and a new environment earlier in the week. I love this one. :-)
This evening I also redrew a previous sketch I made during a Sunday service of a woman and her child who sat across from me at the time more than a year ago. (I often stealth sketch people Sunday morning while listening to the sermon because, well, we're both sitting in the same place for an hour and why not?... it keeps my hands occupied, anyway, and they're too busy to notice.)

Oh, I like the textures on this quite a bit! Excellent job there, your character is lovely and I like the torn jeans also.
One critique: I might raise the trees (bushes?) a little bit in the middle so there is not that white-ish contrasting area underneath her crotch which I find a bit distracting and not in a good way. I think that simple correction would make this a top-notch illustration.
Also, not necessary, but might make a good addition: a bra strap sliding off one shoulder. Normally unless they're pinned to the overall's straps or they're VERY tight you can see them, esp. since the neckline of her t-shirt is so low.
Good job, thanks for sharing!

This looks great, good job! :-) You should see my first illustration in Affinity ^_^ ... the whole process gets easier with time. I've been working with it since December and I at least am much faster than in the beginning!

I really love the image of the woman at the bus stop. It is an easily recognizable scene with a strong character. Very well done!

Hi all,
as I've been quite taken by various jobs I haven't posted here for a while Besides being invaluable for everyday commissioned jobs (e.g. quickly creating assets to be used in Flash animations), at the time I did a couple of more illustrations in Affinity which I haven't shared yet (I was kind of reminded by the fact that I'm doing a new - slightly more elaborate - one at the moment)
Here you go, back for more soon

Yep, Affinity is great for a lot of things. I often forget about the pixel aspect though, because I'm so happy with exploring the vector . . . :-) Also I really like the pen tools and pencil effects in Art Rage so I tend to use that for a hand-drawn feel and then work on those drawings in Affinity on a separate layer. Which is not to say the entire thing couldn't have been drawn in Affinity!

Hmm. Okay, I LOVE the texture and lighting. This is a great image! Now I'm not that great with drawing cars myself (never something I have actively pursued drawing) but I can see a bit why you might find the angle of the front bumper wonky, and it might be a fairly easy fix depending on how you've set up your image. :-) It does give the car character so it's not a bad thing (push it even more!), but here we go . . .
*cough*
You're going to think I'm crazy after seeing my markup. I hope you don't mind that I traced lightly over your image in another program to do this.

Hey that is cool looking. :-) Maybe I will have to try that out. Of course I am not sending very many emails right now, but oh well!

Yes, The mistake I made was not to put in those lines in to begin with and went full freehand which works for monsters. Anyhow why use another program ;)
