ChrisP got a reaction from pxlbltz in Drawing (vector) tools like Flash?
I have done limited vector work in Flash and one thing that struck me was how, using "Object mode" or more importantly having it turned off, enabled many functions like booleans, etc... without having to go to a menu. It was very freeing actually. I'm siting work by Chris Georgenes and some others when I say this.

For example, in non-object mode, you can create a shape with the pen tool. Then you want to create shadowing. So you simply drawing a new shape (outline) over the area (say an oval) and click on new area, fill it with a new color using bucket tool, then delete the oval outline. No menus or boolean tools. Seems very "freeing"

I was wondering what others thought of this workflow. I never used Freehand but everyone seems to have loved the implementation of its' toolset (especially compared to Illustrator). I wonder if it wasn't more like Flash.

I can make a couple of short videos showing what I mean if that helps

So again, I got up, got my cup of coffee and for the pure enjoyment (and amusement) I started to read this lengthy thread. Wow, a lot of opinions for sure. Hmm..should I add my 1 12 cents?  Ok...my coffee is making me but I promise when I'm done with my coffee I'll stop typing.

This thread reminds me of the requests for features. We all want what we want which is basically AD to be AI but cheaper, and on all platforms. Personally I switched to Macs in 2008 and haven't regretted it once. PCs dominate for more business reasons than artistic/creative IMO (and if your opinion differs I respect that - so respect mine...which is based on the past 25 years). At my office I still run PCs for the business part but the creative is all MAC. Yes there are other ways to go about this but some business software I use is Windows only. I do what I have to do and don't worry or complain about it. Ok, maybe I complain a little. For instance, I have a 130K CAD/CAM Windows system at my office. There is no MAC version. I hate it personally. I get more hang-ups and crashes than I have ever got on a MAC. The funny thing is most of the developers of the software are on MACs that have Windows installed. Pretty funny but that's life. Am I saying MACs are better then Windows systems - no, maybe, sometimes. It all depends.

I know this thread is mainly about addressing some concerns about Serif's "bad business decision" to not go for the PC market. I get it but it's their business. Your opinion is fine but it is not law, nor is mine. If you would rather go to Adobe, god bless. It just really stinks that when I cancel I have no more software, nor way to open my files. Perhaps that is what other developers need to focus on - being able to open Adobe product files as well as AD opens up AI files. Hmmm...let's think about that one :)

I think most here actually still maintain the Adobe subscription, I know I still do. There are still things I need like AE that make the subscription model still viable for now. My subscription is due to renew in Jan 2016. Hopefully by then I can cancel and stop using Adobe products because I resent the subscription model. Then again, one of my friends who is a popular motion graphics artist loves it and recommends it. His audience is bigger than mine so he wins and so does Adobe :(  What we have to be careful of is the possibility of more companies going to the subscription model. If they do, we are all screwed  and held hostage. The only way these companies will reconsider is if financially they are hurt. That would take a lot of people canceling at once, and companies also. Banning together is the only way to reverse this monopoly. I won't hold my breath...and ooooops... my coffee is done. I have to go reboot my PC....lol

As I was getting my cup of coffee this morning I was just thinking about some things I read on the forum and about my own needs in using AD. I realized we basically all are asking for AI features in AD but at a cheaper price point. Also in a v1 of AD. It know I can be impatient for features to be rolled out, and maybe some of you too, but the developers are very gracious and informative about their goals with this software and the eventual suite. I personally am still dipping back into AI to get some things done but when I think about it there are definitely workarounds in AD if that "tool" is not available. I guess the bottom line, as Quarian stated so well, is that AD will never be AI nor is its' goal to be. AD will be its' own animal and judging from v1 it looks very promising. I do think things need to be added to make it production ready where houses will be willing to integrate it in their pipeline but this will also take a mind-shift. That, to me, will be the biggest hurdle, not the capabilities of AD.

For me, I'm dying to see a viable AE replacement. It gets tougher and tougher, especially with some of the new features just rolled out in AE at NAB. I poured my heart into Motion, starting in v4, but there doesn't seem to be a desire by Apple to really compete with AE. Therefore I am constantly using AE and paying Adobe :(. Yes, Motion is very capable of doing somethings that AE can do, and some ever easier, but if you want to do anything somewhat "interesting" in motion graphics, you will be disappointed. I know that is not really what Motion is for, I understand it's purpose and integration with FCP but I just wish it was so much more. And, the new M5 update, which I haven't downloaded yet seems just about 3D titles so unless that's all you do..... :-(. Again it's wanting M5 to be AE but at cheaper price point.
I just realized I cannot type to a forum when drinking coffee....I just start to ramble......good day to everyone, you are all what makes this forum so informative and entertaining :)

Adrian - iDraw still has a soft spot in my heart but I was having to do too any workarounds for things I could do easier in AI and AD. iDraw does have those nice features like you mention but they should be implemented in AD as they do seem rather basic to have in a competent vector program. If iDraw had a brush panel like AD it would be very interesting......
I am really looking forward to the iPad version as I usually can get a lot done while I'm on the road and them port over to the desktop version of iDraw to finish.
Adobe has recently come out with some apps that can (kinda) do the same thing (Illus Draw or Line to AI) but the workflow is not as fluid. I suspect with the competition heating up that this type of cohesiveness between iPad apps and their desktop brethren will be the norm at some point (or at least I hope so).

Ronnyb - totally agree - with my limited experience with the trial version, Sketch 3 was very buggy. Sketch is no more than a $25 app for sure.

    Hi All,
Not sure if this has been brought up or if I am posting in right place, but has there been any mention of making a version of AD for the iPad? The reason I ask is that I always found myself using the iPad version of iDraw when I was away from my desk. The files of the iDraw iPad version and desktop version sync nicely so I can always finish later on my desktop. This is also true of Adobes Line iPad app and Illustrator as far as I have read. I'm going to try it out later.

    Just wondering...
