Gave it a shot, not sure I got the results you expected. What do you think?

DM, maybe if you posted your sample, I could tell if I was in the ballpark.

jer reacted to Alfred in Vector/pattern fill
You can create a vector fill of diagonal lines directly within AD with the aid of the ‘Power Duplicate’ feature, and then you can clip it to the shape you want to fill, but it isn’t as easily created or as easily adjustable as one would expect from a proper Vector Fill Tool.

Hi everyone been enjoying the new version 1.9  I also enjoy using Filter forge and it works quite well with affinity.  However applying a filter forge texture is  a destructive edit.  In Photo 1.9   I have set up a preset for creating patterns it's basically a 600px square  document  with a transparent background.  What I do is add a fill layer and rasterize it. Then I select all (ctrl +A on Pc and I think cmd +A on mac)  once I have my selection I go to the filers menu and select Filter forge from the plugins. there are a vast amount of texture filters in the filter forge library to choose from  once I have my texture set the way I want it I make sure that seamless tiling is checked on and click apply.  Once the filter renders in photo I go to layers> new pattern layer from selection and boom affinity generates a pattern layer ready to use.  I like to add my patterns to my assets panel for easy access and the great thing about this is you can clip a texture pattern into text or vector shapes and they remain completely editable.

jer reacted to John Rostron in Creating tiles using Affine, especially of Leaves
I originally took photographs of leaf litter on  a woodland floor to use as a background image for one of my woodland websites. Later, I thought it would be nice if I could create a tileable  image for this purpose. This explains the procedure. I am using images of leaves here, but the principle would apply to any discrete image with transparent background.
For this example, I collected about 15 leaves from a Guelder Rose bush in my garden. Now is a good time (November in the Northern hemisphere) because the leaves are a rich variety of colours The Guelder Rose included reds, purples, browns and yellows.
Freshly gathered leaves may well be dry and are difficult to lay flat. My Guelder Rose leaves were OK, but I had curling problems with some Maple leaves (English Field Maple, Acer campestris). To flatten them sufficiently, I soaked them in water for about an hour and then laid them out on and between sheets of tissue to dry. They need some weight on top, but not too much. I used a few magazines for this. Leave them overnight to dry and flatten. They do not need to be totally flat or dry.
The reason for needing them fairly flat is that I create the image using a flatbed scanner. I lay the leaves on the glass plate and cover with a piece of thickish white card. This helps to flatten them and also provides a nice white background. I also apply some gentle pressure on the scanner lid whilst scanning to help flatten the leaves. I use a Canon MP630 scanner/printer and Vuescan for acquiring the image. After the image is saved, it is automatically loaded into Affinity Photo. Here is an example:

I can select each leaf one at a time using the Flood Fill Tool with the Add option and 20% tolerance. Many leaves will be selected at the first click, but a few more clicks may be necessary for others. Once I have a leaf selected, I cut it (Control-X on Windows, or the Mac equivalent). I use Cut rather than Copy since the gap tells me if any significant parts have been left behind, in which case I can cancel the cut.
Once I have cut out my leaf, I then select File > New from Clipboard. This then opens in a new window. Almost always this image need no further editing, but the opportunity is there if needs be. I can then export that image under a suitable name (Guelder Rose 01.png in this case). You need to save as .png  (or .tiff) since you need to preserve transparency.
I do this for the leaves on this scan and then repeat for the rest of the leaves. I am now ready to create my tile.
Firstly I create a new image of 800 by 800px ( more or less if you prefer). I then select the first batch of leaves (six in this case, Guelder Rose 01.png to Guelder Rose 06.png). Each in turn is placed on my image tile (File > Place). At this point I usually rotate the placed image arbitrarily and resize it to about 10-20% of the tile size. After the first set have been placed you need to make  a decision: do you want to proceed destructively or non-destructively? For the next stage you need to create a new pixel layer incorporating the images so far. To do this destructively, just pick Document > Flatten. This merges all your layers into one. Alternatively, you can pick Layer > Merge Visible. This merges all your layers into one, but leaves the other layers below. You may need to hide these. Personally, I use the destructive Document > Flatten.
You are now ready to make the first Affine Transformation. This allows you to to swap the left part of the image with the right part, along a line of your choice. Similarly you can swap the top and bottom parts. To use the Affine transform  pick Filters > Distort > Affine. This opens up a box that allows you to select your division lines as Offset X and Offset Y. I find it easier to select Offset Y first, and then Offset X. You can pick any percentage you like here, but I tend to start with 20% for each. Click Apply. This shows the effect of the Affine transform on a set of six leaves (I cannot remember the % setting here):
    Before:
    After:
Some leaves have been split so that the leaves on the right  have the right parts missing, but they are now seen on the left-hand side. Similarly one leaf is split top and bottom.
We can now repeat the process, adding half-a-dozen more leaves, flattening the image and applying the Affine transform. This time I use 40%. We can repeat this, adding more leaves, to fill in the gaps. Subsequent Affine transformations can be 60% and 80%, but after the first few, I tend to use a split which brings any significant gaps to the centre. Here are a few intermediate steps in my tile:

For the final image, I have enhanced the contrast a bit and added some sharpening. Here is the final image tiled with itself four times:

I will be putting some more examples of this under the Share Your Work part of the Forum.

@BarKeegan Nice. I find it interesting to watch how artists handle the elbow and knee type strokes where the reverse bends happen. I see your style is to create a 2nd stroke for those extension lines and carefully meld it to the main stroke line. I often try and use the main stroke line for the bend also, requiring the node at the end to turn 359.5° back on itself. Depending on the stoke thickness the result can be less clean than your method but it can allow me to have a single-stroke closed shape. The advantage to having a single-stroke closed shape is unclear to me and I wonder why I think I want that. 🤣 An old self-taught AI habit, I guess, that, along with others, hold me back from enjoying many AD super-features. Thanks for sharing your techniques!

@risingkirin  Interesting how you penned the bunny and cliff as the same shape, then used the pen again for highlight shapes to distinguish the bunny. I'm sure I would have devised a whole lot more difficult method, and time-consuming, to accomplish that. 😁 Thanks for sharing this.

    Hey everyone,

I'm back with another video tutorial. This time, I've decided to create a minimalist vector illustration using Affinity Designer (Desktop version). I will be covering a few things in this illustration such as shape tools, pen tool, and geometry functions. Feel free to leave any feedback and I hope it will help you on your design journey.

Hello; the new facebook is annoying me no end so I popped over  here to annoy you
This was originally shared in facebook to help the newbies
Not sure how this will work out for you ---- hopefully you will pick up a tip or trick ; or pass a tip onto me
First SS is how affinity photo stretched the three hand held 24mm vertical files . The camera was basically pointing overhead from the back yard to record this cloud that stretched from the western horizon to around 1/3 from the to eastern horizon.

1-4 screen shots shows how the affinity mesh warp tool was used to save most of the data rather than cropping it off. The more I use the tool the more I learn and find other ways to often fix bad photography

5] making the tree and clouds bigger

    "finished" (never really finished)

    one of the original files

Small warning: not suitable for every photo and you cannot go totally crazy as the image will look real weird. I had to redo this photo as the tree was starting to distort too much.
Tip: click on the icon >you can make square inside the photo and that part of the photo is protected. Doing it will explain it best .
your questions, honest comments/CC, and tips or tricks are welcome
JAMES!! I would love someone to make an advanced ''mesh warp tool'' video as I have not been able to find one so it's been all trial and error
Yep; I agree -- the amount of work done and time spent to this point of typing was not really worth it but all good practise
    Cheers

The Shadows / Highlights filter in Affinity Photo can be applied as a ‘live’ (non-destructive) filter, allowing you to make further adjustments later on.

Further to the last screen recording, thought I'd do another detailing symbols placed inside a data merge layout to simulate vector patterns - for me, it's loads more powerful than the new pattern in photo as I like to work with vectors (although I've not used the very latest beta yet) it also works with photos and brushes

@Chickentikka Perhaps a little late but if you're still tuned in, here are a couple of points you can check:
2:21 notice in Refine the author has changed the Output field to New Layer with Mask before Apply is clicked. While it is just one way to do it, the remaining steps of his video work with that method.
2:25 notice the selection produced is not clean and has smudges around the edges that were not masked. This is common with Refine and the author's new bkgd to be added is busy enough that the flawed selection will not matter. Your particular subject image and bkgd image might require you to use additional techniques to further clean up the selection.
2:36 notice in the layers panel that the author has unclicked the visibility of the original layer (that contains the nested Levels layer) and only the New Layer with Mask layer (named Pixel) is visible at the top of the layer stack. The California layer is being File > Placed there on top of the stack but then needs to be dragged down to the bottom of the layer stack. The visibility of the original layer is still off.
Observation: The author used Affinity Designer for this effect but primarily worked in the Pixel persona. If you have Affinity Photo, you could have easily started there and accomplished the same outcome, but with the advantage of more pixel-related tools at your disposal if you really wanted to clean up the selection. That's a big Affinity advantage, personas and the ability to switch between the programs. Anyway, check the 3 time positions noted above to see if a misstep there is causing your problem.
