StuartRc reacted to Frozen Death Knight in Spiral Tool
I made a bunch of presets for the Spiral Tool. I encountered one problem where the preview thumbnails are very inconsistent and hard to see:

In my honest opinion, I think that the shape previews should be just shown as thin vector lines rather than fills. All of the shapes I saved look the best when it's only vector lines. The fills just ruin the silhouettes. Doesn't help that the lines are all black and the fills are white.
I suggest just dropping the whole fill aspect and just go with lines. Spirals can be used to build filled shapes, but you seldom make filled shapes with spirals.
Also, after having made so many presets, I think it would be a good idea to make it so that hovering the thumbnail of each preset will actually preview on the canvas, just like how text fonts and layer blend modes behave. It takes a while to scroll through the list and applying multiple different presets, so being able to preview it when having a shape that works with that tool would be appreciated.

Trying out the Photo Beta 2.3.1: plugins are working, assets look wonderful on dark or light background (depending), and nothing seems to crash. This time I have tried using some watercolour brushes, then one sky overlay from the lovely JR Skies 2 assets pack (thank you, @James Ritson) plus levels and curves adjustments, then off to a pastel plugin, then back for another sky overlay reversed vertically, then a tone map. And then some rather clumsy cloning, to create a bit more bank, rather than a spit of land floating in some upside down sky.  All after first  selecting — below — from the print, downloaded courtesy of the British Library (public domain).

I love that idea: taking a child's work and do something from that, either in 3D or 2D.
    Best regards!

I like it! The 3D designs based on these are impressive...but also have a look at this project

    Hi there!
I came across with the work of Drawkman Drawkman, and I wanted to try and replicate one of his Cartoon Monsters.
Most of this is flat vectors with slight usage of gradients in some areas and transparency.
    What do you think?

    Best regards!

PB 31 Base Texture Toolkit for all Brushes
Added some sample of the of the latest brush sets. [improve seamless textures and do a bit more work on re-formatting the original texture paint set]

This one is a bit more complicated as it involves improvements to several existing brush sets and the formatting of 2 new sets
    A. Project Brush 29 Grass
    B. Project Brush 30 Comic Grunge Pattern
    C. Project Brush 19 Inker Base set samples
    D. Vector Comic Dot asset conversions

and Extension of Project Brush 17 Concept Painter

I added a sample brush set to experiment with. This one is a bit different as it contains 20 raster brushes assembled from 5 different sets. But the base textures are included so each brush can be adjusted with a different pattern

    Contents
20 Pattern Brushes (Raster) [Pattern Painter.afbrushes]
25 Additional .PNG files to exchange in a brush (Duplicate the set if you wish to preserve original without re-loading)
    2. Sample Multi-layer symbols (Simplified these as can sometimes have over 20 layers)

This isometric illustration project was probably one of the most difficult I've ever worked on but absolutely worth all the effort in the end. Big shout out to Kevin House for taking the time to provide the walk-through and resources to get it completed 💪

    Apps: All
    Platforms: macOS, Windows and iPad
You can now choose whether you want the background of the Asset Panel to be light, dark, checkerboard or automatic based on your current Light/Dark UI setting. This behaves in the same way as changing the background colour used for layer thumbnails.
This is primarily to be able to switch the background to achieve greater contrast for the particular assets you are looking at.
You can change the background colour from the burger menu at the top of the assets panel.

StuartRc reacted to Ash in "Keep selected" preference now available in Pencil Tool
    Apps: Designer
    Platforms: macOS, Windows and iPad
When using Pencil Tool the behaviour has always been that after drawing any curve that curve is then selected. There has been many requests to add an option to change that behaviour so the newly created curve is not selected. This is particularly useful when you often want to change the colour or stroke width of the curve you create next without changing the properties of the curve you have just created.
You can find this option in the context toolbar of the Pencil Tool (“Keep selected” checkbox, default value is on as per current behaviour).
On iPad the option is represented with the below icon (again it's toggled on by default)

We have also added this option to all shape tools on iPad too. This was previously available on desktop versions only (note we have also changed the name of that option on desktop from "Select new object" to "Keep selected" for consistency)

We have now added a spiral tool which is available from the shape tools flyout. This is something we have had many requests for, but also varying requests as to the type of result wanted. For that reason we have tried to make this as flexible as possible, both offering different types of spiral and variables to adjust.
When you create a spiral you will see from the context toolbar the different options available. Here are some examples of what you can create with the tool:
    Spiral Type: Linear

    Spiral Type: Decaying

    Spiral Type: Semi-Circular
This type replicates the way many people have been creating a spiral in Affinity - effectively by joining decreasing semi circular arcs together.  With this type we also offer a counter Semi-circular option which returns the spiral back on itself:

    Spiral Type: Fibonacci

    Spiral Type: Plotted

StuartRc reacted to Ash in 2.3 New features and improvements list
    Hi All,
Below is the list of all new feature and improvements which are included in the 2.3 beta (bug fix list is available here).
To learn more about these features please click on the link to go to each feature's dedicated post. To give feedback or report bugs against any of these features please reply to that same post (also check out bug reporting and feedback tips).
    • Move Data Entry improvements
    • New tags panel for adding Alt Text to images and objects
    • Spiral Tool
    • Ability to change Asset Panel background colour
    • Fields now available in Find and Replace
    • Pixel grid added
    • "Keep selected" preference now available in Pencil Tool
    • Create and place password protected PDFs
I should say in general we are now aiming to do slightly smaller updates more regularly than before so we can test and release in smaller chunks. This will allow us to get improvements and fixes out quicker, as well as having overall benefit to the stability of the apps.
The beta phase will now be shorter (4-6 weeks) for any update, and for that reason we will be avoiding any significant changes to functionality during beta as we focus on fixing bugs and correcting unintentional behaviour. This does mean that more of your improvement suggestions may need to wait until a future update (e.g. like some of the Move Data Entry suggestions you made during 2.2 beta which have now been added to 2.3), but please keep those suggestions coming!
    Getting the 2.3 beta
If you have not enrolled into the beta program yet and would like to take part, you can do so here. This will immediately give you access to the latest 2.3 beta builds to try for yourself.
If you are already enrolled in the beta program you have two options:
    1. If you still have the 2.2 beta installed, you can now run up those beta versions and you will be prompted to update them to the 2.3 beta.
    2. If you have uninstalled the 2.2 beta, you will need to go back to Your Account -> Downloads and product keys and find your previous order for the Affinity Beta Software Program, and you can download the 2.3 beta from there.
    Thanks,
    Ash

    Hi
I tend to work without it as when I have it active I had a lot of trouble using the brushes. and organising the brush panel...Sometimes it gets re-activated with updates.. but it is the first thing I switch off

NB was just looking for just looking for a set of Geometry icons (Merge Curves | Separate Curves | Fill holes | Remove Inner Curves | Cut Curves with Key object) in the 'Customise Toolbar' that appear to be missing in latest live version but present in last beta...Cannot really create a bug thread as you appear to be about to go to 2.3!

StuartRc reacted to jmwellborn in Morpeth Castle with apologies to Cezanne
One selection later, with the output as a mask, then the color picker to match the background colour in the image for a rectangle under the image layer,  then a white balance adjustment to get rid of almost all of that colour, then a levels adjustment to create a more defined image, then three pixel layers with varying opacity levels to provide some colour with some watercolour brushes, then a merge visible. Then off to a pastel plugin. Then back to Photo for another levels adjustment. Then a vibrance adjustment. The result: Morpeth Castle, "a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building at Morpeth, Northumberland, England ... restored by the Landmark Trust and is now available as a holiday rental home." My source comes from the British Library, digitised image from page 82 of "The Local Historian's Table Book of remarkable occurrences, historical facts, traditions, legendary and descriptive ballads, connected with the Counties of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, and Durham.,," which is in the Public Domain.

    Hi
just thought I would report this one....Been working on a large file this morning (1000 x 500mm 300Dpi) which is multi-layered and consists of a mix of raster and vector elements. It was working | workable fine until the update this morning; where every-time I zoomed/panned across screen I was confronted with large blocks of flashing white shapes!

Added a video below showing the issue.. Hardware Acceleration is off!
    NB
An earlier file with same size configuration and less layers is not causing this issue

I fixed it I think! by:
    1. Setting up an new file with same dimensions and dpi.
    2. Simplify the layer structure
    3. Copy Artboard to holding file

bit strange I think!...I have seen this before but not for a long time!
