Looking forward to vector based brushes

Impressive piece of work!...'pure vectors' can have such stunning results.....like this one

Hi,
There are several methods you could use to re-create distressed looks on lines
1. As Toltec has suggested simply replace the lines with a textured brush from the brush library panel
2, Manual: Create a distressed object line with expand stroke and manually edit vector with pen+node tools
3. Mask to below: Overlay a shape with texture pattern (vector or raster). Make sure layers are 'stacked' [pattern on top] and use a Layer Mask. Activate mask to below in layers panel [right-click on selected layer] and 'knock-out' parts of the image [Adjust for effect]
3. Layer Erase: Overlay texture pattern (vector group) and set layer containing required pattern to 'erase' [layer erase]
4. Mask: Add layer mask to vector object and paint mask with textured raster brush5. Nested layers with pattern object inside line [Thick lines or shapes]

Hi Stuart,
In the video it looks like you were editing 206 originally? There was a bug with the brush duplication though as you said, i've now fixed that. Thanks for the feedback.
Chris
You are welcome...
Wow that was quick...Thanks for that....I am impressed!..a small bug ..but yet another improvement to an already brilliant piece of software
Yes! I edited an existing brush (adding nozzles in this case but also tweaked some of the dynamics for other brushes) but I noticed that the changes didn't always get saved in the edited brush when you closed the panel or duplicated the brush.. The duplicated brush would get the new settings but the original would sometimes revert to it's previous set up..
206?: yep..originally..!.
The video is cropped I recorded the actions...trying force an event on the brush panel to...(where the active brush simply stops working on screen) so I just kept duplicating and repeating process until the brush stopped working/painting on the pixel layer. Changing the active brush in panel can sometimes re-activate a brush that stops working after adding new nozzle/s.

Thanks for the files, and annoyingly it seems to currently be ok for me! Are you using a graphics tablet at all? If so what kind? I've been using a mouse to try to reproduce so curious if that is why i'm having issues.
I have a feeling it might be the same or a side effect of the issue Ladlon reported in your first link.
Yeah!.....

Definitely intermittent!...Sometimes it occurs quickly, or can just suddenly start happening after hours of working in the app...Which is why I was wondering whether it is a cumulative response to constantly changing brush values/add remove nozzles or background textures.
I suppose what I have been doing/working is not common but extreme workflow! so you just would not come across it.
I use a Wacom Intuos 4 (old and now with a smooth surface!) tablet 90% of the time....wouldn't go back to a mouse
Drivers are listed in signature..
It has been happening occasionally through 1.5 and 1.6 and beta versions. and Ladlons issues/comments are certainly similar/same... I have seen exactly the same issue happen with raster brushes where it does not change the 'implied' brush for several seconds.
OK! So trying to force the settings/nozzles not being saved when duplicating brushes:
So recorded screen added for AD beta version. to try an get something to occur.... took over 5 minutes!
1. Create use a brush
2. Edit brush (add remove nozzles/images/exchange background texture/ change scale/size or anything else!)
3. Duplicate brush
4. Test new brush
5. Test previous brush
repeat! as necessary
So ref:video: if add nozzles to a brush 207 (4 to 6 nozzles) in this case, duplicate it. Close dynamics, go to new brush (208) test dynamics=6 nozzles
. Go back to brush 207; open dynamics saved nozzles 4 (even though there were 6)
This also can also happen when you change the dynamics settings

Hi Stuart,
Unfortunately I'm still struggling to reproduce this - I wonder if there is something specific with your custom brushes. Would you be able to try and replicate the issue using the 'Texture' brush (last in the list) from the Assorted category please. If so could you record a video of the process you used to duplicate it?As for the other issue, do you have a link to where you think you've seen it reported? I have noticed that immediately after Duplicating a brush from the Brush Editing dialog it will actually deselect both brushes, and instead revert to the 'Selection' brush - as if you had modified the current brush on the Context Toolbar. However this is not obvious until you edit the size of the brush for example. It is only at that point the dialog heading changes to indicate this. This is incorrect based on the Mac behaviour as it retains the original selection after duplicate. I'll get this reported.
@Sean
It's quite an odd issue I has occurred several times but is intermittent...I was wondering whether it was a consequence of a large brush category...or just something occurring when you get close to the limitations of the app (Do you know whether their is a limit on number of brushes in a category?)
I have sent you the brush file/set (it's sort of my development brush set for some new texture brushes and is still incomplete) but you are welcome to test/play around with it!..
Good news is that the previous issues have been eradicated

Just for info
1. All work for brushes completed in AD. Inc nozzles exported from a file I set up for creating nozzles and seamless patterns.
2. Exported as transparent png
3. Created in category (for testing) as sent file
4. Brushes tend to get duplicated a lot in process
5. Split to categories (renamed)+edited
Took me a while to find the other thread..There are actually 2 but the brush questions thread (in questions) raises some Qu's regarding brush sets and categories...But some of the issues highlighted are similar
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/53262-brush-switches-sometimes-dont-register/
and this ..but with different types of brush...I have seen this occur with some of my brush sets...but again it's not persistent/constant
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/53036-brush-questions/&page=3
As for the other issue ..settings no being saved..I will try and get a video of it...I played around with the default set (texture) but could not get it to occur earlier

Added a new conversion - I had to fight with this one (but it's useful to see how much you can push/stretch the application)

Can you elaborate a little more on this? We can add a "insert node" function - but where is the question? - either at the logical midpoint (curve t=0.5) or at the physical centre point (which will never be precise as it will be achieved through curve subdivision).
Insert node at midpoint /and or add x(nodes) between 2 points would be a really useful feature

Hi Mark
I have a couple of observations/queries rather than major bugs to report so far!:
..you are probably aware of these.
a. should brush size values in px be showing with decimal places?
b. As I have been working with a lot of brush categories I have found that having large numbers of brush categories while renaming individual brushes can slow down operation in the brush library...to a point where you have to restart the application to reset...This would not occur with general use! but it does get to a point where you can see the app building the brush menu
c.You can get 'stuck' in a colour, if using styles. (apply style to object,,then try you change the colour with a swatch...sometimes you cannot change the colour as the style is still applied ..You can get around it simply by clicking on a new colour on the wheel. (to reset to sampled colour/object colour)

Hi Mark
Thanks for the new Beta.. and I appreciate all the hard work that I am sure has gone into the latest updates. Overall looking good!.It has been stable even with large number of vector objects contained in some of my crazy files. There are a couple of things that I have noticed:
1. I am still finding a couple of recurring brush issues. One of which I reported earlier after the 1.6 launch in this thread issue 4:
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/49337-ad-16089-ad-16190-beta-brush-bugs-and-some-weirdness/....but was having difficulty getting it to appear...Until this afternoon (as attached movie!)
I thought it was occurring when I exchanged a nozzle but today I found a similar issue with the replacement/removal of the Base Texture. hence the video. Previously I was able to retrieve the 'working brush'/selected brush by toggling the active personna ...but it appears not to be the case with this issue.
2. I think this has already been reported with the 'live version' 1.6.1.93 that sometimes the settings are not saved with the brush. I also found that if you duplicate a brush the settings get copied to the new brush but not maintained in the active brush after you close the dynamic/brush window. (not frequent in latest beta)...or just ignoring the changes

Brilliant work Francky,

A fantastic example of the potential of these apps!...Clean and polished artwork..nice!..

These last two pieces remind me somehow an old animated movie of the middle '70 named La Planète sauvage.
Great visionary work Stuart!
Thank you! ..I think..that is a very strange movie...I just could not resist looking it up. but i can see the resemblance with the rocket.

Hi Sean,
The Pressure profile graph on the Stroke tab is one way of creating 'wavy' lines.
To get multiple sizes, set up a zig-zag (W or M shape) on the profile to see the effect. then refine as required.
Save the profile to reuse
reset to default.
Can be a pain with a lot of lines!
It's worth noting that you can save the line profile +colour in styles

Hi all
This is a new small sample set of brushes I have been working on for several months with base textures, seamless patterns with mixed vector/bitmap nozzles.
It is a larger single set containing 30 raster brushes I have changed the numeric s slightly on the brush reference sheet (it's just a number!)
Sample sheet is attached
enjoy!
Added A new version of the sample set using AD 1.7 Brush Engine
Used #08 sample set Texture Paint Brush set as latest in sequence!
Added Experimental Set combining 2 brush Sets
1. Project Brush Organics 08 (For AD/AP version 1.7)
2.Texture Paint Special Set 08 (For AD/AP version 1.7)
Added luminosity adjustments for effect

Bonsoir.
Yeeessss!
I know what you mean...and you may be right!

MM..that's a good question....
I like all three applications...and I use them all extensively but it's depends what I am trying to achieve with my general workflow. (I have migrated pretty much away from Adobe over the last couple of years) and now for drawing in particular these 3 apps are my primary tools. (yiphee!)

This year I actually managed to complete the Inktober 2017 challenge (just with a couple of hours to spare) with the creation of a mix of drawings in Sketchbook Pro/AD and AP. It was tending to take me longer to complete daily tasks [word prompts] in AD and unfortunately Inktober is very time restrictive. I used the beta version (1.6) a lot for the project....largely because of the new fantastic stabiliser tool for pen/pencil when I wanted to produce a vector 'sketch'. which left me the options of; rasterize the line art (use the raster brushes) and/or have a vector version for enhancement later. However, Sketchbook has had this type of tool & line adjuster for some time. Used in combination with its mirroring capability it can be a powerful utility.
I just find sketching out, generating ideas, erasing, editing and line modifying etc.. (blue/red pencil ideas) much simpler in Sketchbook Pro. It's a bit more responsive with many additional drawing tools (rulers and guides),the ability (like Photoshop) to grab brushes off the screen where necessary (It's where my crazy Brush Library began!).
The obvious drawback of Sketchbook is that it is a bitmap editor but AD handles importing the PSD output (inc layers) really well. For a number of drawings I simply imported sketches to AD as working templates and re-created an initial vector based version.

It's an impressive drawing....like a lot of the artwork that has been posted in the forum....It's like watching something powerful evolve! over a relatively short period of time.
I appreciate both and actually and like mixing raster and vector together. It can create some fantastic effects. You just need to look at Frankentoon, Agata, Monez, Robert Harris and Paolo for the that. I think the ability to combine vector/raster in the same software is a considerable advantage and adds to the versatility of AD/AP and superiority over it's rivals.
The drawings I have been attempting for the past couple of months have however, been just vector. It's quite time consuming and I suppose in reality just been experimenting with vector textures and patterning. As I just can't leave those textures alone....
It can be difficult to mix complex colours like skin without mesh tools. Vectors alone can be limiting without resorting to effects. Initially (a year or more) I was using Gaussian blurs inside objects to mimic highlights and shadows but I have found..much to my annoyance that you can achieve better results using a combination of layered flat tints (opacity), the transparency tool, colour and subtle graduations. Creating grouped overlapping objects with varying opacity/colour worked well for me..but can be a slow process...but once you have the objects it can be fun to play around with.
It is an advantage for me personally as consequence of creating raster brushes (Texture Painters) I have a lot of seamless vector patterns which have been used a lot recently (like Letracet!....if anyone remembers that!
)
