  1. Hi Mark,

    Enable Pointer Support active

Using same file as yesterday (mostly raster layers+1 vector)

OK ...1 hour later first crash [same issue previously reported where UI/interface locks up]

    1. Use AD beta version

    2. Paint in layers with numerous brushes

    3. In 'time'....Lost ability to use shortcut (resize brushes); tool icon became horizontal double arrow; pixel brush reverted to arrow with no circle outline.

    4. Tried to quit to restart...couldn't basically...interface/UI locked up had to use task manager again.

Is this what you were expecting?

This has happened a few times with last few betas...[reported back in AD 1.6.3.100 beta release]but yesterday working with AD (as installed [inactive checkbox]) for over 10 yours..no issue at all

    Non Critical

There are a couple of things I noticed..not relevant to this process

    a. Beta version installed with English USA not UK even though was set to UK (I think this was occurring in the Windows Store version)

    b. Annoyance....If you select split screen (used large vector file)...and select the tab to drag to adjust display ratio; any object underneath is also selected (so slider is not fully independent/floating over image) Also if zoomed in and full screen visible display the split screen position can shift to right hand side of image/file...

    Restarting...

Hi @Stuart_R, can you try the new option in Preferences | User Interface | Enable Pointer Support. This fixes the UI stopping responding on Surface Pro devices (assuming you have .NET 4.7.1 installed).

    Yep No problem...

4.7 installed (just checked) only HTTP activation off in features ...ie aS windows set it.

Will run AD today with Pointer Support enabled...will let you know if any issues:)

  3. Thanks for the latest Beta ....I know it's not particularly relevant to my personal hardware set up [Tablet Drivers+ MS surface]..but thought I would test anyway as you have given up your weekend again for this awesome project...

    Looking good so far...checked

    Large files [vector + raster]

    Multiple documents (tabbed)

    Large brush libraries

300 x 600 mm 300dpi raster painting (on going) with multiple layers

even left it sat with many 4+ large docs open to see if it hung up over time.....

    All Good so far..brilliant!

  4. I Have added a limited number of seamless (hopefully) pattern assets (30 in total) (import to asset Library) as a supplement to the Texture Paint Brushes:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/55202-texture-paint-brushes-group-1-4-120480/

and as a working asset library for creating vector patterns. (Found these really useful while working on the on-going Inktober artwork Conversions )

    Usage

    1. The patterns can be complex inside the rectangular containers but they can be broken apart for other use. (Like spreading a texture inside another object/masking/ pattern making)

    3. Tiled patterns (They should snap together)

    4. Re-colouring (select internal groups in layer panel to re-colour collectively) [not 100% success can be a bit of trial and error!]

    4. As symbols should you choose to add to symbol panel

    Hope you find them useful!:)

  5. Evening

    Thanks for the update....

But as with Beta versions odd things can happen.:)..just thought I would report this one..no crash reports/having to closing through Task Manager

The latest beta just seems to hang or randomly lock up...I am sure it's not random; but appears that way....It has happened twice today I have attached a couple of screen shots. for reference.

    A. Full screen as I was working on 4 files simultaneously..all are object heavy.

    B. CPU usage which for AD is active even though App was dysfunctional. (35% to 50%+CPU &12%GPU with over 10% assigned to AD)

NB end through Task Manager:allowed access to save-unsaved docs dialogue box before closing

  6. Hi all

I Have been working on a new set of Raster Brushes for AP +AD following on from the sample set upload over Christmas.

    Located here:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/52527-texture-paint-mixed-nozzle-raster-brushes/

Again represented with  base textures, seamless patterns and mixed vector/bitmap nozzles.

120 Raster Brushes from a set of 4 groups containing 480 Brushes (built from over 350 seamless textures and 220 vector nozzles).

30 Sketch brushes (with/without base texture)...small initial size

Uploaded first set of each of the 4 finished brush groups + 1 Sketch Brush set

    Sample PDF sheets as attached

    Enjoy!

  8. Thanks for the latest Beta Updates...... and I am sure all the hard work....yet another significant move forward....

    Looking good overall.....

Raster Brushes ...behaving much better now!:)..Thanks for the fixes...duplicating improved significantly and so far adding nozzles being constantly picked up...so far!

    But....

I am getting some instability issues with prolonged use.

I have been working with the latest beta since Sunday evening... I am getting the impression this beta is less stable than the previous one (It has crashed without warning at least 4 times this week)..sometimes just stops working locking up the PC and not generating crash reports

So unfortunately I cannot as yet indicate steps to reproduce events other than working mostly with Pen tool to re-trace sketches and using graduations.

However..I have managed to grab this one off the screen before it disappeared..hope it helps...!

Also something 'odd' happened in brush dynamics ...with 1 profile graph (not big issue but thought I would show it!)

If you look at the highlighted profile graph 'thumbnail'...it has appeared outside its container...first time I have seen this one....Been trying to force it to occur but no luck yet!

  9. Hi Meb,

Thanks for picking it up... I was distracted by feathered dinosaurs last night!

I have just been looking at your file example with the stacked layers...It's just a suggestion but would it not be better to create the 'cutter' using just the base layer shape (excluding shadow effects) for the object to be 'cut' and then re-overlay the shadow on top ...if You know what I mean!...

It would keep the final object [layer 5] much cleaner and try to keep the number of nodes down

I have been having a few issues with punching out complex objects with multiple shapes

  10. Hi Kieran

If it is just vector objects as in the tutorial on the specified page:

    Simple route is to

    1. Place the 'distressed' object above your image/other vector object in Layers

    2. Right Click on object/group to use as distress effect (top object) and select Mask to Below

There are other methods you can use: have a look at this thread:

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/54176-textured-lines/#comment-274983

    hope it helps:)

    Stuart_R,

I agree with you, there are some amazing arts posting some incredible pieces of art here. I've seen most of the ones that you listed and they are fantastic, and there are two very talented users that you didn't list that I recommend you check out if you haven't already, IsabelAracama and Retrograde. Very nice stuff.

You're completely right about the gradient mesh, especially if you are working with skin tones. I hope that when the Affinity team adds a gradient mesh it works better than Illustrator's. Illustrator's gradient mesh is okay and I know a lot of people like it but I never could get it to work the way I wanted it to. Maybe I wasn't using it correctly but whatever the reason, I felt it had the potential to be greatly improved upon and I hope that the developers here can offer something better and easier to use.

Pure vector pieces do take longer for me to make too but most of the time when I make a piece I prefer to spend a little extra time and keep it all vector if I can.

    Hokusai

Absolutely!...There are so many it would be a long list...one that I think is going to grow significantly...I have watched some of Isabel's tutorials..the dragonfly on Behance is amazing! and Retrograde's isometrics are outstanding..and the giant blue rabbit!. I completely agree with you:)

Yeah! the gradient mesh was never my favourite tool. It is too 'sensitive' if that's the right word..requiring a lot of patience...and easy to break/destroy your efforts. But it does have some neat tricks of being able to extract the mesh shapes from the parent mesh...and if you keep it simple can be quite useful. AD is evolving into something quite special and looking forward to getting my paws on 1.7.

I am sort of pleased your vector pieces take a long time.. makes me feel better having just spent 5 days working on one drawing.:)
