  1. Hi
It is really all about masking! and how the layers are organised. Drawing beneath is pretty simple to set up!
Ignore some of the complexity in the little movie but concentrate on how the layers are organised
    1. Top Layer has a mask (which is the solid with holes [punched out using tier panel assets]) ...Which are still stored as a separate layer!
    2. The imported template has 2 layers a. Vector b. Raster (Where you can draw!)
    3. Next is tier or panel storage (Not necessary but useful to have for any edits you need to make)
    4. background Solid.

    Notes
    1. Draw on the Raster layer. You can see that the ink colour is set to black. But the scribbles are orange or blue or black. In Clip Paint you can set a colour for a layer.. useful... So whatever you draw with whatever brush it will always be set to a single colour...You can do this in Affinity by setting the FX of a drawing layer to 'Colour Overlay' and picking a colour. You can have >1 so switching between colours is a checkbox nothing more!
    2. Lock the 'overlay mask'...not the layer itself. make it vector and save as asset then you can have several in one document .... or you can change it!
    3. You can fill in the gaps (Holes with fill holes)..but you need to be in 'Vector Persona' or 'Divide' or 'Separate Curves'
    4. You could be really efficient and set the underlying panels to be slightly larger than the cutters in the mask..It's not vital but may be useful for printing
    5. You can change the colour of the mask...
    6. To get more elaborate you can drag the drawing layer inside a panel and sketch inside the panel. Then the drawing is a bit more independent.

    Hope this helps

  6. Hi, Interesting question!

Works very well if you set up a structured workflow:)

From a personal perspective I would rely heavily on templates and integrate a workflow that encompasses the whole Affinity Suite. Using just Publisher (because it's publisher- Pages + documents!) would be a mistake as you are restricting the application of some extremely useful features that are not directly available.

This is particularly true when you consider the upcoming new features added to Designer 2.04 | 2.1 (Vector Warp | Vector Fill | Brush Panel Enhancements | Knife Tool | Bitmap Fill new options and Style picker etc....) Affinity Apps work very well and closely together.. they were designed this way!

    Considerations
    1. Consider using templates at a Page; Panel and tier level. Also create a valid asset structure that is available to all the apps
    2. Decide what tools are needed to speed up workflow: Pre-define brush categories | Typefaces | Styles | Palettes (Re-usable)
    3. More complex bit -setting up different page sizes U.S and UK Comic templates are different standards!)
    4. Create assets for Panels Tiers and Pages
    5. Define you pages that can be 'pulled as templates from Affinity Designer into Publisher. (When A comic gets larger ..much easier to work on the master document)
    6. It is not just a matter of building a page template with spreads and pages.. need to decide how your panels + Tiers are going to fit the pages (templates inside templates)
    7. Flexibility: the more variation you can add to assets and templates the better
    8. Make use of the most valuable tools. Clip Paint has a lot of integrated features to speed up workflow. Some are available in Affinity but a. Not called same feature and b. work slightly different and simpler in some ways (a considerable advantage)
    9. May need to make a series of structural templates to help you (Sketching | inking | Pencil work) rather than try and create everything by drawing inside spreads of publisher

  7. Sorry could not be of more help!

Did some tests a long time ago with brush settings and dynamics. 'Distance' would have been a good option. However you could check out: Inktober Inker Dynamics to see if you can get a better response on the brush

Adjust the Curve to a convex ''Dome as in the first graphs on the left side of the image (Unfortunately this works well with 'Distance')

Thanks for the link, Stuart. I like his work almost as much as I like yours!

    Thanks Alfred!

I thought it would be the other way around...I was really impressed when I viewed his work....eek! You can easily get swallowed up in the quality of work on that site! fantastic stuff!

  9. Thanks! and...

Yeah probably!...It was supposed to be a distance galaxy bit maybe it is a bit too close!😀

I have a couple of layouts.. might try another version in another drawing (Planetary Toolkit has 14 different planets in several different layouts and configurations)

  10. Hi

Really Depends on whether you want to create a 'Vector' or Raster (Pixel) based brush.

    For vectors:

    or

    or
