  1. I did somewhere on the Forum...I will go find it...but it is just simply that if you have a px object like a raster drawing you can drag a vector inside. Here is an AD file vector in raster.zip
  2. Ah! you are correct... but you can have a blank px layer and a pixel object. Into which you can add a vector. I have used this quite a bit!...but I only found it by accident! Hope it's not a bug!πŸ˜€
  3. I come back from the 'Paint Festival' and my notification are full of responses to this thread.. Wow!πŸ˜€ I had a look into the original question raised by @awakenedbyowls over the weekend and largely believe that I stand by my original comment. There simply are issues with workflow that do not adhere to the way Affinity apps comply fully. 1. Don't believe that the approach of adding a transparent gradient to a shall we say Layer and subsequently dragging objects inside will function. It is obvious really in that you are attempting to apply a tool (transparency or gradient) to something that does not exist because a layer is just a container. If it is empty then there is nothing to apply the gradient to. As discussed earlier layers groups etc are containers not vector objects as @walt.farrell in his usual effective and precise responses has pointed out. The same functionality applies in Blender where a shape object is just a container but the mesh holds the content data. I actually tried it. So what is implied by the question does not explain the result; only the reasoning of an idea. Oddly though If you apply a gradient colour to a pixel layer that is or contains an object i.e is not just a blank layer a gradient is applied but the px object disappears (this I could see as a potential bug in that you should not really be able to do it!). 2. @walt.farrell is absolutely correct when describing the differences between objects and other representative items. I am surprised that no one has mentioned the really useful ability to be able to drag vector objects inside a raster object and add colour to the parent this way 3. If you process workflow in a logical fashion i.e adding raster images into a layer then apply a gradient or transparency effect.. then it works exactly as you would expect. This apples to whether you use FX or tools. I still cannot see any real issue here with the app (bug) it is just the method being attempted is flawed 4. Even though AD is incredibly flexible and offers some brilliants px Vector integrations there are sometimes limits. This is probably just one of them. Personally I would not attempt to set up workflow this way. It is an interesting idea (pre-styling a layer) but you can't as it stands at the moment!
  4. really! Transparency is a vector tool function NOT a raster tool. Therefore you cannot apply it to px. It is not a bug.
  5. You can create a grid with lines (Pen or Pencil) and fill the interstices using the 'Vector Fill Flood Tool' . This will create vector squares of any colour you choose.
  6. Ok Well AD does not really have true vector brushes So even if you used a 'vector' brush it would actually be raster Pencil Brushes.. Well I can sort that out!: An overlaying vector texture is a good idea!. If you are looking for some type of grainy appearance : a. you could add noise from Palette b. Use a scalable vector pattern | texture and edit | experiment with the Layer Adjustments | effects to get a different result There is also the new functionality of dragging assets from assets panel onto the Colour swatch and use a pattern (seamless if organised correctly!)...but this would also be raster.
  7. Hi You can create large illustrations in Affinity Apps. I have worked on 2 x 1m images (300dpi) previously without any issues and mixing both vector and raster components. The brushes are also 300 - 400 dpi raster nozzles. Sometimes have had issues scaling back down in export persona! What you are suggesting is around 3m. As previously suggested you could scale up or use a lower dpi. What kind of texture are you using in the image? Could it be a vector representation?
  8. Hi This look strangely familiar but with a different process. I have had a lot of issue recently with brush selection and editing that is causing crashes. I logged it here If you get the time to have a look. Eventually I resorted to re-installing the apps and then clearing out all the brush sets. Only re-installing the sets I was using!. It worked but has started to occur again! ..including today. I am not sure whether it is to do with older brush sets and | or new functions added to 2.1 upwards. In essence the selection of brushes or repeated selection can cause a crash!
  9. Hi Had a look in the brush sets. For the brush you are describing have a look in PB 28 In Stipple and maybe 'Fine Grain' and 'Irregular Dust' PB 03 Big -T has similar brushes. This one is old but imports into AD 2 upwards (Working on updating this one!) Also For textures generally and brushes PB 31 Base Texture Patterns If you want overlay patterns try dragging seamless patterns as assets to the Colour fill swatch the Context menu. (You can re-colour using Adjustment Layers or change the colour of the asset in the first instance). Been using this a lot recently to get a quick texture overlay on a drawing. There are some assets in Resources that you could use for this here:
  10. Just an update This has started again today! I only have 8 brush sets installed. All older versions were removed so I could do some drawing. So with brush editing panel open and swopping brushes in the brushes panel locks up AD 2.1. The strange thing is that when I closed down 2.1 and opened the latest beta 2.2 selecting a brush in the brush panel crashed immediately...was not expecting that! didn't even get a chance to touch the artboard!πŸ˜€
  11. Hi Well as @walt.farrell has indicated they are just assets. You can use them as you wish. That was the point of adding stuff to resources.. I did put together some time ago!.. For the Camouflage drawings I believe, (Must get around to a new one!) a set of basic instructions on how to assemble vector drawings using the textures and assets: a. Camouflage I (Assets samples and construction) b. Camouflage II (Layout and asset construction) and how the patterns are assembled c. Camouflage III Use of assets to build objects and full asset and toolkit examples For Bindweed as above the assets are slightly different in that they are assembled from 2 primary elements (a overlay raster Ink outline and a vector coloured base with container vectors for details). Well with the exception of the background which is not really that visible but composed of Planets from the Planetary and Galaxy toolkits (not completed! yet!)
  12. Well! The short answer is not at the moment. There are no pure vector brushes in AD at the moment The long answer is maybe: a. You cannot expand a stipple brush like the ones indicated above but you can expand the basic brush to be vector. You can also apply pressure settings to distort the shape of the line (make it wobbly!) but this is about the extend of the brush - vector conversion b. To get the kind of effect that you are looking for; manually created lots of compound vectors (Meshes) to produce overlapping the patterns. It is time intensive but it is much simpler once you have a large collection!πŸ˜€. While working on the 'Comic Book' Template a series of vector sheets were built very similar to your brushes above so that I could used as a textured overlay on the panels. If you didn't have an issue or concern about using vector; the new Asset to Fill swatch tool can be also used to create stipple type patterns quickly. Added a lot of vector assets to resources but not the comic book stuff as it's... well not finished! I did create a small asset library of repeating textures (Mostly irregular dots) but it is not installed at the moment! Some of the resources below may help you quickly construct the effect you are looking for! Resources 1. Repeating vector texture assets here 2. Grunge Vectors here 3. Camouflage II assets have a limited collection of meshes here 4. Rock Monster World also has a small collection of vector grunge to enhance the rocks here 5. Planetary Assets here (have a lot of overlaying textures that you could mould into the vector patterns that you require) 6. Poison Assets here old but has the dot patterning Samples no available a. Comic Dot Brush Set here b. Large Vector Grunge Patterns here (These are raster brush patterns | textures converted to vector assets. They are square on the sample sheet but much larger in reality. Sized to the width of Panels or tiers in the current template) c. Comic Book Splat assets (vector) can be manipulated to create the above effect here
  13. No Problem! you might find these a more up-to-date version:
  14. Yep that's the one...I thought I was being thick! and missed something!...However! I am sure you will resolve it...it's still a good feature to include in the apps!
  15. Thanks...! FYI: I switched off: Auto-scroll | Auto-switch Category and Enable Associated Tools. but reactivating them did not have any effect. The brush set is new in 2.1 not an import from 1.10 or 2.0. The Category list is quite small in live version but more extensive in beta. I also noticed last night that sometimes adding base textures can get 'stuck' i e when you delete it from a brush: a. The red outline appears as edited b. The Texture has not been removed and you have to repeat the process.
  16. A bit of a time saver. Useful addition! Not seeing any issues with the Fonts The Grid Preset leaves me with a question! Been testing it today.. exploring an area that I admit ; have not been using (Usually set up a grid when I need it!) I have a question though. Created 2 grid presets in AD. They appeared OK in other apps. I created a category in Publisher and then dragged the 2 new presets into the new Category. Leaving the original blank...(Which was not a Category I created) but it appears I am unable to delete it!. The sub menu is dimmed out
  17. Hi I am having trouble creating a sub-brush using drag and drop method from an existing category to the sub-brush panel. The brush just gets stuck a the edge of the Brush dynamics panel! It works in 1.10 but not in 2.1 and 2.2 Added little video! drag brush.mp4
  18. I make a lot of use of object libraries and re-usable elements. I thought this chat was getting a bit off topic about Greyscale and FX so I sort of responded a with an outline of current processes in the Bindweed thread..
  19. Processes Added a Method image after discussion in new Beta 2.2 update Use of recent tools added to Affinity Apps and mixing raster + Vector Graphic elements to build re-usable structures The combined use of Knife + Style Picker has really improved the process of constructing these type of images. 1. Couldn't really use Vector for the outlines as would simply take too long So opted for a Comic Book Style using Raster Brush Outlines and backfilling using vectors flats and infill blocks (I have a new Brush set called Comic Blocking!) 2. Once the objects are separated out and created inside the solid outline it is much easier to apply flat fills in a vivid colour (So you can see what you are doing! + So if using grouped [Raster | Vector] to build larger combined images you have base to obscure any background elements) 3. Add Vector details inside solid shape 4. Select the Style Picker and load with the required style | Colour 5. Apply to target objects (much quicker than filling by hand) 6. Set up a previous drawing as a style palette to easily select what you need (So objects can become quick palettes) Much Much quicker!πŸ˜€
  20. I tend to assemble objects for a final drawing these days!...each element can get a bit complicated. The process works well! and I can control them with layers and groups. I could have embedded the files but it sort of became less necessary. Coupled with the fact that my initial drawing can be a bit weird! I like the extended with mode. with greyscale it can show instantly how the image is balanced out.
  21. Oh!...thanks!.... Much appreciated! The praise really should go to the Affinity Team and established Beta Testers for developing and supporting it's rapid evolution in the first place... I would not be able to produce these drawings without it... Frankly the overall the direction and development of these apps is absolutely fantastic!...I don't have any major issues with them and I am pretty confident that this Beta will go the same way... I keep having to change my work flow. Using the pen tool inside vector objects to draw as flat colours and styling using the Style picker tool is really efficient and much faster. Many thanks for that I am using it all the time!πŸ˜€ ..yeah the artwork is pretty complex..πŸ˜€which is great for testing.. speed and lagging is much less of an issue. NB I just playing around with the raster brushes. There are a couple of new features exposed that I did not see listed...Rename Brush + save as!)..Just thought I would let you know!
  22. I did originally. Yes! The first couple of vector drawings I worked on relied heavily on embedded files to get the speed up. These drawings are very complex. I was impressed how affinity handled them with 1000's of vector elements. I believe I commented on this in the original thread. Oddly I converted 2 versions of 'Poison' yesterday (didn't want to use the original file.. bit risky!) to test the new greyscale feature and FX removal. I meant to do a bit more testing but was a bit distracted!πŸ˜€ I could not find any initial issues..But i Have not been through the new 2.2 features in more detail yet! Poison is very complex with I believe all the mushrooms and background layers embedded Rock Monster World used the same technique a sort of multi-layer embedding 'Untamed' + 'A Stand of Trees' Do not use this method. They are single files with even more vector elements and I can work with them without any issues which is great! and lastly: 'Bindweed' is yet another method mixing raster | Vector elements on a relatively large artboard. (Raster Comic outlines + Vector colouring) I also tried the Greyscale View + FX with it yesterday again with no issues that I could see. But Affinity has seen significant speed improvements up to its current development. I find it no longer necessary! I used to create a master file of same resolution and size to embed child elements in separate layers. handy for shading and FX tweaks.. It is rare that I use FX in my drawings as I prefer to shade by hand. The newish and very welcome 'Style Picker Tool' + Knife + Vector Flood Fill Tools have also significantly changed how I create the vector objects. This was really a result of the number of vectors and nodes where the > the number the slower the app would get...but we are talking about a lot! possibly 10's of 1000's. I just used is a a technique for controlling the issue...and was 2017-18 I think! I could not see any issues tagging the top artboard with View>Greyscale or removing any FX effects in the original file. It would be interesting to test it with Data Management and linked | Data image files. I was surprised that the options were not added as buttons in the context bar.. but it's early days with this beta!
