I would like the BMP export feature also. As it is I now have to use Pixelmator to do this whereas I had hoped BMP which is a standard format, would have been available in Affinity. I left PS for Pixelmator and then Pixelmator to Affinity. Whilst there is no BMP export option, I'll have to stick with Pixelmator to do those conversions (which is a shame).

I need BMP because I have some hardware that uses BMP images in the icons.

I bought the Suite too when I saw that it could import CAD files. I don't understand why you can use the measurement tool to measure the area etc., the measurement is displayed but then it disappears. Not happy.
    Please fix this Serif.

For freelancers like me, I think DCrosby has got to the nub of the issue, I abandoned Adobe when its business practices became fiscally oppressive. I am now retired from commissioned work and pursue my fine art work with the aid of the Affinity suite. This inevitably has led to a drop in income, which only reinforces the decision to move away from a 'rental' company like Adobe was the right one.

For me, and a lot of other people I think, it’s not so much about the money. It’s about a single company controlling my ability to earn money or create art. You become more beholden with every project you create. It’s a new reality that craftsmen never faced before, that your tools could be taken away from you for non-payment, or a computer error, or sanctions against your country. They can raise the price, let the bugs fester, deny your right to use an older version of CC  You’ll take it and like it
You might as well “owe your soul to the company store” like some kind of sharecropper. Pay and pay for decades and when you retire you keep paying just to create a church flyer or a graduation announcement for you grandkid cause you don’t own nothin’. Adobe literally owns “the means of production”
So I’ll go out of my way to avoid that, especially as I reach retirement and look forward to creating art for my own enjoyment and not so much for pay.
If the sub works for you, beautiful, but it’s about way more than cost for some of us.

It would help if you would create a new topic in the appropriate Publisher Beta forum describing your crash. Serif might like to have a description of the problem there, and can provide a private upload link so you can give them a copy of the IDML file that caused it. That will help them fix the problem.

It cannot be better than Affinity Publisher's IDML importer as it must be using that as it's path.

Totally agree that this thread no longer serves any purpose. There is a workaround using pdf that works for some and not for others. I find it incredulous that people are going as far as "demanding" answers or timelines for the developers to provide a solution to importing another company's file format. To my knowledge Serif never advertised that as a "future feature" for their product yet they are being castigated by a few who see that as a prerequisite to using Affinity. If it is a prerequisite, get over it and stick with your current software that can cost you every month what the one off price of the Affinity product costs. You can then leave the rest of the more than happy Serif customers to read meaningful threads on the real benefits and value that Serif have brought to the market. As raised by @Haakoo, Serif probably need another method of responding to feature requests.

I think if you close this thread, people will just keep bringing up new threads, either unaware of this thread or even despite knowing about it.
It would be good for threads such as these (and bug reports too) to have an optional "Official answer by Serif" that features prominently on each page of a thread, so users can see right away what the official position is without having to find it buried among all the other discussion.
That won't stop all discussion, of course (such as the "any update?" requests), but I do think it would cut down on some of the repeats from people who were unaware that a response has been given.

Well to clarify, that is not meant to be taken as INDD and the tech support agent is not announcing that as a future feature. The answer means specifically this
Publisher (Affinity Publisher) should (if our programming is successful) be able to import indesign files (using the format IDML) although not for the initial release (which was 1.7.1)
So in that sentence "not in the initial release" specifically meant the one that you could buy at launch, not the one that comes before version 2. I understand why you might think that it meant "not in version 1.x" but it did not. You should not assume that new features in version 2 or 3 will be announced by QA or Support. If in doubt ask. Seriously, customers telling other customers what Serif will put into our software is just ridiculous. We need a better method to communicate our current thinking on our products, and if it is said by Serif there is has been said, otherwise all is speculation.

I'm surprised that this thread has been allowed to continue. Serif/Affinity are obviously not in the software business as a hobby - it is a business and no doubt like any business is intended to show a profit.
That being the case, there's no doubt in my opinion that the developers will introduce new features, etc on a soon as possible basis as there's every incentive for them to do so. If, although I very much doubt it they manage to find a way of opening INDD files directly with Publisher then so be it although as that file format is constantly, or so it appears to me, to be a moving Adobe target it will be a no go in my book.
IDML - well maybe but going on about it day after day isn't going to make it happen any faster. Publisher is what it is and for now that's what it is.

They specifically said that INDD is not coming, only IDML. So until they say otherwise you shouldn't expect it at all. But as mentioned above, there are ways to prepare for that by converting to IDML using [batch] scripts.

You make it sound like they promised a release a year ago, but the only thing they said is that they are working on IDML support but they can't give any timeline. Also they said it's not a trivial feature to implement.
That's not how software development works. Unless you're almost finished you really don't know how long it will take to implement a complex feature, any "accurate information" would be guesstimates at best. And then there's the whole business part of it, Affinity have to decide what features and development to prioritize over others through a whole series of applications and platforms, depending on God knows how many variables. And things constantly change along the way. So they know better than to give ”accurate info” when there are uncertainties ahead.

Yeah, that was the point wasn't it. Adobe already had the graphics industry in an iron grip but decided that wasn't enough. Any thoughts of switching software is dashed by the fact that giving up the sub means no access to your older files. There's no way to open InDesign for those occasions you might need to while creating new sets of documents somewhere else. Workflows and expectations revolve around Adobe. At this point they OWN your ability to make a living in your field. That's a terrible feeling and untenable from a business standpoint.
I only own Designer at the moment but plan to add the other apps at some point. I'm fortunate to have a copy of CS6 which has given me some breathing room. I've noticed a number of "missing" features and some UI flaws in the various Affinity apps but have no choice but work around them until Serif can add or fix those issues. Our options are few and Affinity is like a lifeboat that can't fit everyone all at once. Hopefully they can come back to pick you up later.

The team have done a wonderful job in creating this software. Users will always seek refinements that their own situation demands but for me there are workarounds that I can get by with and given the cost of the product compared to the Adobe offerings, patience is the least I can offer to say thanks for breaking the mold!
Great job on all your products Serif!

Hello. So the final now has been released, the most important next step must be to get Indesign-CS6-files imported. Or even CS6-IDML-files, which couldn't be too complicated.
Without IDML-import Affinity-Pub may be a nice tool but useless for professionals who are desperately looking for an abo-alternative to Adobe since the next MacOS-Version will kick-of CS6 as 32-bit-apps will be no longer supported on that Macs.
So please, please get this IDML-import first in the to-do-list! Non-perfect-import would do it – format-settings and other finetuning-configurations could be done afterwards.
    Greetings - uro

Just some early results from me and comments after reading some of this thread... having migrated from Quark to InDesign years ago, I found at that time that converters didn't really do the best job. If you are talking about handing files back and forth and you think you are going to do that between different applications, it's a waste of time. Converting should be a one way thing really.
Anyway, what I've found is that Publisher does a great job of opening PDFs. I always had a habit of saving PDF versions of all projects (that's how we would do proofs anyway). Today I opened a 32 page full colour publication from a PDF. It was good enough that I could probably just tweak or make necessary changes and go to press. If I wanted to fully regain layout functionality, I would need to recreate master pages, styles, and re-link columns and text boxes back into stories. Not that hard really.
When we went from Quark to InDesign for our magazines I just created a new template in InDesign from scratch, including master pages, text and object styles. That was a good time to clean up our styles and layout, and didn't take that much time.
So for me I've come to realise that I don't actually need to open my InDesign files. I have the PDFs for existing work, and so far either Designer or Publisher has been able to open them to use as necessary.
