Some people mistaken "alternative to..." with "cheaper version of...". Affinity is offering software in its own rights. Publisher is not InDesign in disguise. Also - do you think Adobe is gladly offering specification for their proprietary file types? Thats why we cant import .ai files to Designer if saved without pdf component. Not because Affinity team was lazy but because Adobe is guarding their secrets that would make you use their software.
Perfect example of what I am talking about. Just start doing new jobs natively in Publisher. You will not need old files indefinitely, do you? I migrated this way from both Photoshop and Illustrator to Affinity. It took some time, I had to re-save some ai files etc. But if you are actively working then after few months all new files are native. "Alternative" means that you are using it instead other software, not that you are "kind of, sort of using new one but really mainly to open old files made in another software". That doesnt make sense and indeed is useless. You jump from one ship to another, not standing with one leg on each board, hanging between them. And if Publisher does not suit your needs yet - give it some time. Dont expect beta of totally new software to beat or match functionality of something that was being polished for 2 decades...

You are too dramatic. Just use the software, that is migration enough. Ability to open InDy files is just a bonus when it comes.

I can't give any timelines for this (IDML import, not INDD). It's being worked and will be in an update when it is considered working and relatively stable. But I would be talking more than a few weeks in not months, It's not a simple thing to just implement
(edited by Patrick Connor for clarity that this is a statement about IDML and not INDD: 08 July 2019)

    Hi ch1ptune
We do not support packages for this initial release. It may be something we look at doing in a future update. Current if you want to send the file you just need to send the afpub file, or export it to something like PDF if it's just for review.
Our reveal in finder is currently only for the main document itself rather than a resource. If you were sending files they can use the resource manager to replace the files but they would still need to search in finder for where they placed them
These two things are not bad feature requests so I;m going to move this post to that section

We've been "bearing with you" for quite literally 4 years for a planned feature. This is absurd.
If I didn't give a rats about Affinity Designer (or Serif in general) I wouldn't be here badgering you, but I do care. It's not only impossible to stop using Adobe products for missing features like this, it's also impossible to genuinely recommend to serious users.

I'm coming back to see if there had been any progress on this issue. But no.
You have limited resources, right, but also wrong priorities I'm afraid. This is perplexing to me. You are probably catering to your existing user base, but you should understand that adding basic functionality would expand that user base significantly.
    Anyway, still on AI CS6.

    Hi,
I was very excited when I heard Affinity Designer was in the works as I thought it would be the perfect system for me. However, the lack of DXF export makes it useless for my purposes. I have an art production company and 90% or our work is setting up 2D cut files for laser cutting and cnc milling.
I am stuck with AI even though I loathe it and even have a legacy copy of DrawPlus X8 which I regenerate pretty much every dxf file I produce BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MOST RELIABLE CROSS-PROGRAM-FRIENDLY DXFS I HAVE EVER USED.
Soooooo frustrating I can't take combine the streamlined workflow of Affinity AND output files I can actually use for something other than print.
If you share my pain please pitch in! I know so many people who won't make the change to AD for that one reason.
Any feedback from Serif on this??

It's very quiet here in 'Designer' development for Mac last months.
I understand you're focused now on iPad version and on finishing Publisher beta.
But can you inform us what are your plans for 'Designer' in 2018/2019?

    Not even close.
The only option in the market seemed to be affinity, but for me it doesn't cut it: crashes, half- baked features, missing features, no way I can replace PS or AI at this stage.
Considered they're now focusing on more products on top of the limited resources they have, it's obvious for me that it doesn't make any sense to hold my breath.

+1 to this. I really need this feature for complex illustrations. Having to select each individually is a chore. I like AD a heck of a lot more than illustrator for most things, so having to fire up my old illustrator CS5 again to do this is disappointing. It has been in the pipeline for so long now, but I consider this one of the basic for a good vector program. I know you have limited resources, but this one has more practical use than a line stabilizer, for instance.

+1 and then some. Joined the forum just to post this.
I downloaded the trial version of Designer and within a short space of time I knew it was a good enough product to buy (especially on sale). During the trial I just created my own documents and played around with the different tools. I was impressed.
After installing the purchased version, the very first document I opened up was an existing document I had been working on in Ai, a map from a GIS program. Went to try and "select by lineweight" and realised I couldn't. Nor by color, or or any other attribute. Ain't no way I can click-select thousands of objects by hand! I am not a programmer, and have been blown away by what your team has done at this price point, but this feature just seems like a very simple sort and select algorithm to implement even in a rudimentary form? I agree that basic functionality like this is an absolute must for any production or even casual environment and am surprised and dismayed to find it absent even after years of asking.

Yeah I usually have a time-frame in mind when completing these, which is no more then 1 hour. Some peoples set a time limit of 17 minutes like STUDIO-JQ recent poster design project (Made You Look). Why the time limit, to eliminate paradox of choice, and just get the job the done. Granted these are all abstract stuff most of the time, so I just load up the canvas and put shapes on it till I start seeing a scene on the canvas.

Actually, I was not referring to that. Specially as I try literally [ that's why despite knowing that 13 inches is too small for a screen for my graphic needs, I spent almost an hour drawing with the iPad (the Mac guy in the store was super kind) ]  every new thing and approach I can access to.  IE, I'd be just sticking as well to modeling with 3DS Max, after all is the easy path for me, I not only learnt that in a master, I worked at 4 companies were its use absolutely essential to bring the plate of food. Yet though I went the hardest way -imo, by then- and learnt Blender till fully replaced my workflow with it. And PS workflow is often criticized ...by people who was never able to really master it. As otherwise would know how extremely versatil it can be, even with its disadvantages.  I can be one of the guys around that has used more varied set of software tools in 2D and 3D, and have used almost any brand of drawing device sold in the market since the Kurta in 1991...

I don't let pass a day without trying a different technique that helps me speeding up as I have no shortage of gigs, but of time ! So, that matter is indeed absolutely vital to me.  So, I said that knowing the deals...

Probably you understood not very accurately what i was referring to with workflows. I was thinking in what each one needs for the actual task to be done, deeply independently from whatever the software. Is very different to draw a comic line art (you need really a non jittering device, probably some stabilizer), than do its coloring, than do digital painting illustration (where the issues from firm line are not so critical and the versatility of the software application is more crucial) , sculpting (again, it IS different), or retouching. You will hear, or I did, from a bunch of very pro photo retouchers (people working for some high end magazine/company)  how they discard any tablet size bigger than small! Simply, their retouch action works better if they reduce movement to the wrist, while a traditional painter, or charcoal illustrator painting in a canvas will normally prefer the movement  of the arms as, ironically, can be more precise, and for large surfaces, faster. These all are different, by all means, workflows. And to that i was referring, not to sticking to Photoshop or Wacom. So, my point was, that for some people, some loosing of response due to wireless device comunication might be critical. Some others, wont ever notice that. And that's to be expected as every type of task is different. A great example of this -if any of you has played Quake (1,2,3) when being younger-  is how quake players would prefer in its day a mechanical ball based mouse over an optical, and definitely most would laugh if heard some new player asking in the middle of the match if a wireless mouse could do... While it would never matter for playing Sims or Age of Empires... Is the task, where I emphasize the workflow makes a difference, not the software which determines it. In co mpanies I have been forced to use almost everything that has been invented, so, probably one of those persons you cannot expect to have resistance to try sth new to see if it works better, lol...

And trying for a second time, more "seriously" than the first,  iPad Pro + Pencil, having quite higher hopes for its specs, videos, advice from colleagues, etc, etc... So is not that I was against it... if anything, biased in favor of it... I wanted it to be great ! I was totally heading to purchase it !   :)
I made all sort of critical tests... And I ended pretty convinced : Is not much better  than a wacom of the past generation or even Intuos 4 (my XL) , and even if slightly better, the advantage is lost with the accuracy lost when dealing with a  smaller drawing area. Not to mention that Wacom has improved greatly the new pens and tablet technology. I would LOVE it to be different, as I don't believe in monopolies, is bad for us artists... but had to surrender to the evidence.

Also, with workflows I also was trying to refer to habit connected to how each one's brain iterate with creation, how you even grab the pencil, what is you artistci process (ie: some people start with a detailed drawing and do their digital painting over it, some would paint a full finish-level greyscale painting and color on top of that; some would do a more alla prima style, laying strokes in an impressionist style, building shapes by sculpting planes of wide brush strokes (blocking shapes, they call it) These are totally software independent. They are artistic workflows. I even don't always use  the same ones ! But even so, for the mass of work, and speed's sake, in professional work you end up trusting in a workflow and system that works, even if moths later you move to re-invent it and use a cleverer approach.  But sticking to a dominating a system, is not necessarily a bad thing, all the opposite : Can be what lets you keep at it in the professional field. As after all you need to consolidate workflows (1 or 100) , convert them to solid system that output quality and fast. (again, at least if working in this for a living) . I have seen certain pair of guys that do stick to Photoshop. And heck, are they magic with it. That's what counts. Like Harold foster (Price Valliant comic penciller, inker and colorist), it is said that it was like magic seen him ink at light speed very complex drawings, with absolute perfection. You do not have to focus so much in novelty and innovation as in the maximum efficiency and control (even while for that you need to constantly research methods and applications). I can tell you he did stick to a workflow, and just perfected it to crazy levels of excellence.  So much I am interested in innovation, that I though no device has reached our hands accuracy and perfection. So, I know that moment is still to come, as I know we could be drawing much better, in better conditions, and we arent.  This is why I did dig a crazy lot about iPad Pro + Pencil for months.

hehe, c'mon... most people (even those wanting to convince themselves that this is not the main reason) is here due to the excellent price and to avoid subscription like a plague.   ;)

That's true. Designer is lacking in those areas, but if you have a broader view, you can see that the Affinity range lacks in more areas, like Format support.
That's also another feature that's being asked for. And I'm confident that the folks at Serif took notice of it.
I'm sure internally they have something like that. Why they don't shre it with us... well, maybe the dicussions would be even more passionate about why something goes first that the other, and they Devs would spend more time here answering (because people demand answers) than developing.
So, I know how you feel, and things could be made better, but anything they do, it won't be enough.
    Best regards!

    MEB,
I don't want you to think I'm being antagonistic here, as that its not my goal.  I'm taking my precious time (and yours) to exclaim a real shortcoming/need with your program. Most people won't do that. They'll do a drive-by complaint and move on to another product.
I applaud your company's efforts with this product, but feel you are not seeing the end user's perspective.  I fully understand all of the things you want to do to make your product work better and enhance it, but that's from your (the designers') perspective. To put it another way, you've created a Ferrari.  It's shiny, sleek, and runs really fast. Your staff is always looking at the Ferrari on how to make it better.  You LOVE that Ferrari.  It's your BABY.
But there's a problem that's apparent to a whole lot of people, but maybe not you. Your Ferrari has no doors.  The only way in or out is through the windows.  Now, to a younger user or someone who is accustomed to get in and out that way, that makes perfect sense.  But most users like doors. Not just like them, but in most cases need them. Until you add the "doors",  the people who NEED your Ferrari won't buy it because they can't  get in or out efficiently.  That ability outweighs ANY other enhancement you may make. Anything else is cosmetic.  You need to focus on function.
Those are the ones you really need to address here. It's really that important. Thank you and Best Regards!

    MEB,
What I saw on the specs mostly was that it opened .AI files (especially needed if you no longer have Illustrator), and exported into all of the standard "vector" formats out there. The program is good, but it lacks an ability to interact with the industrialized world, where basic CAD files exist. I've been using commercial vector drawing programs for over 30+ years. Even back then, they all had the ability to  import .dxf/.dwg.  This is not new, and can't be that hard to implement.  In the industrial workflow space, precise, accurate drawings are made in CAD, and then transferred to vector illustration programs like Designer (mostly Illustrator or Corel Draw) for artistic enhancement everyday. Whether that be straight artwork creation on top of a drawing or die line, or just simple coloration treatments.
If you want this product to succeed, it must at least be able to do this. The applications and sales potential for your program that can do .dxf/.dwg file interchange, far outweigh any "purely artistic" oriented need.  There are thousands of users out there that feel abandoned by Illustrator, only to be stuck with them because of Designer's inability to match that simple capability. I know I'm not alone.  I don't want my money back. I want you to see the potential to make your good product great, and unlock it's full potential.
