Sharkey got a reaction from jmwellborn in Tutorial for total idiots needed
Of little 'help' I know I am still telling myself "just Do It" after nearly 15 yrs. on Macs. Still trying to think of how to do something before realising it just drags&drops DUH!!!!!
Moving to AP from PS5.5 via Capture One, Pixelmator, Silky Pics, Photo, Aperture etc etc etc was a complete "Nightmare" and I doubt it completely ends :-(
As I recall "This is an Illegal Operation", Windows 5 I think, caused me to switch the PC off just incase someone found out ;-O.........
Language, Assumption and the totally misunderstood Intuitive are the most intrusive and destructive forms of torture for the user of any software - beware of them all.
Oh, and age of course (rising 67).

    A contribution.
High Pass sharpening is most useful to me when the 'unsharp' method appears to induce a little too many artefacts (especially when I have cropped harshly).
Yet to try this with AP but my usual method under these circumstances was to only sharpen the mono layer in Labs (PS obviously) thereby creating one sharpened layer without the RGB layers suffering.
I will see if this is possible in AP when next working unless someone else gets there first.
Up until now High Pass on all layers seems to do the job well [perhaps its just I got better with the camera ;-)]
Oh over sharpening for the web with unsharp settings is my norm..
Printing images is (for me) the final product. Usually on my own Large Format Epson for shows/customers (rarely now) or for the wall.

OK. I confess. I have in all my >20years of digital photography ever gone out of my way to use 'layers'. They/it/them may be going on unknown to me but producing good images has always been a matter of Develop (negative/raw), Edit using tools, print appropriately and store/file.
So, as with film I have only ever needed a filing system that 'I' understood and that nowadays could handle the variety of file types that need storing. I admit Large format, medium format and 35mm where put in their own areas but I did not need three filing systems to handle them.
On my machine I have had, Bridge,FRV,Photo Mechanic,C1 and a lot of lesser known products and as yet have not found one simple enough, reliable and capable of handling all of the files types I have used.
Result is - use Finder and Memory (my memory). Multiple hard rives each based on time, content or accessibility.
When I find (not sure it will ever appear-not profitable) I will let everyone know.
Just to put it in perspective, one hard drive has not been accessed this year, only finder can browse it properly, while another is accessed every day with FRV the resulting images are then only viewable in Finder unless I use Photos (not my favourite).

All true the caveat is that you must have an account with Adobe (not that big of a deal I guess) and if memory serves correct there are some libraries/code you may have to install in order for it to work. The latter was the deal breaker for me.
I would say it is a viable alternative to the nothing we have from Serif / Affinity at the moment. Myself I just use the Finder and sort and store my images with my own weird organizational method.

Honestly there is many software already available freeware and commercial which deals in the one or other way with this, that I wonder why it should be that urgent to have then some more or less sort of halfhearted implementation here.
Also IMO there are actually much more important and relevant things to work on, like all the bug fixes (MacOS, Windows, iOS) filed in by various people and the extension of restrictions of already long time available functionality. Would be fine to have first a stable, well working and performing actual base, before diving into other things.

Rafs have always been an Achilles Heal in AP. The new 1.7 seems to have made a bit of a leap in this regard. Give the Beta a try with some old (non critical) files. It may be more to your liking.

Just like to do that (occasionally surprise)
Additionally - tried opening 5xRafs and was very pleased to count only 12 seconds before they appeared. Toggling between them was ALSO snappy!
Sorry to only have Rafs and UI comments but I have waited a long time for this update - just - so I can continue with AP and my old kit. The thought of a another type of camera or hardware upgrade was getting me a bit down as finances would have not really supported either.
Very glad that frustration has seemingly been removed and the future photograph output might actually increase and maybe even the pleasure at doing so.

Have just developed Raf Raw file
Opening time much improves (from external drive) approximately 4xfaster  at 5seconds.
After adjustments including - crop, exposure, vibrance, brightness plus about 10 other minor fiddles.  Develop, again about 4/5 seconds.
As a first time experience this is very encouraging.
Small UI glitches - little arrows used to select strength of change (exposure, brightness etc.) are very susceptible to slight cursor alignment issues. eg. raise when I think I am on lower and visa versa. Just too small-dontknow.
Font list seems not to be functioning correctly with font names and examples overlaying each other.
Snapping and choice of snapping point/lines seems somehow unreliable; I do not seem to be able to allow the script box to align (snap to) the centre of an image?
The Raf development quality seems very good to my eye with no cast or distortion visible.
Sharpening could have a slightly longer scale with harsher results possible at the develop persona.
I've printed the first image produced to customers satisfaction - so - happy bunny so far

Oversharpen for any website posting - rule of thumb.
The back fungus is a bit soft but hells teeth you would need to up the ISO and have one or two f/stops to get that right (hard by hand). Other option is to focus on the back of the front subject which may(?) have dragged the back subject into the depth of field available.
    Like it anyway

S'pose the connection is the use of AP image production for the site.

Others are using Adobe & PCs.

It has been interesting so far, the conversations on relative work styles from the contributors.

My workflow seems to be simpler than theirs and I am able to offer editing to them when they have problems (especially with keeping quality levels up )

I've decided to use Apples Photo for organisation of site images with the AP plugin for rescue and high end production from the original Raf (raw) files. e.g.. print orders.

So far Photos has provided all that is needed for the web images from OOC jpg. without resorting to AP..

AP really shines though for fast image editing for print and display images and returning the output to Photos gives a really secure feel to it all.

    So there is the connection.

These are Phalacrocorax carbo, or so I'm told -- the Great Black Cormorant, and probably the same one you have, jer. (We also have two or three kinds of gull, but not the noisy greedy ones that steal your burger.) They do dry their wings, but most of these must have dried out before we arrived. Just the odd damp one, as you see.

GarryP, there are actually dozens and dozens of the critters, but I felt like being picky when I took that one.

I had the privilege of being given a ride on the Yarmouth Lifeboat last week, and took my camera -- naturally! These photos are small ones I posted on Facebook; if/when I come to print them, I'll re-edit them at full size (and maybe develop them a little differently).

The Needles chalk stacks, and the lighthouse:

    Scratchell's Bay and the cliffs

Cormorants. They very considerately arranged themselves according to the Rule of Odds: a group of three and a group of one. (I wonder what he did to upset the others?)

The Cropping selection/choice has been and is from my perspective aligned with the ppi/dpi question the longest running of requested changes that appear on this and other forum posts.

I have no axe to grind on either subject being sanguine about both, however, given that so many contributors both new and longterm bring them up so regularly (my impression), would it not be seen as a major positive response from Serif to just change them to a more universally recognised methodology?

Terminology has always been the enemy of comprehension and usability in AP and I view this 'beta' as an opportunity for clarity and simplicity to come to the fore.

Perhaps a change of Title IS all that is needed to bring the photographers out into the community, sharing their work. Just a repeated thought.
