  1. Hi MEB Ok, after testing various things I have discovered what I believe to have created the problem. What I hadn’t realised was that my right hand was allowing my pen to make contact with the tablet while I was looking at the screen. It appears that if you attempt to rotate the brush while you’re pen is in contact with the tablet then the app is likely to crash. Keeping the pen away, the brush seems fine. So, problem over I think. Worth noting if this ever pops up again as a problem.
  2. Hi MEB Well they are third party hair brushes. I have to admit I need to test more to see if other brushes do the same. I will try turning off metal compute as well and see where I am then. Will come back to you in due course and let you know if the problem persists.
  3. Using brush rotation with version 1.7.1 crashes app. Using either left or right arrow keys rotates but crashes if you try to rotate too much or too fast. Don’t think it’s me, needs sorting soon please.
  4. I have been calling for the ability to create more than a 2 page spread for some time and the ability to individually set page size. I’ve heard all the arguments about using guides etc to achieve fold outs etc but it’s not the long term answer. Affinity has yet to acknowledge the benefits of the above in out of the ordinary design work or that in the future development of the program it will be considered. We can but hope though. Now that a lot of the major restructuring of the software is, as I understand it complete, more time might be available to consider expanding the use of Publisher. As it is, Publisher is pretty damn good and studioLink is superb but it still can be even better with a small number of improvements such as this. In my mind I feel a lot of professional designers will not switch to Publisher from InDesign while it can only produce a 2 page spread.
  5. Looks like the “shape builder tool” in illustrator is similar to “smart tool” you are referring to which has been requested many times. Maybe something similar will be added in a future update. Affinity are, or should be well aware of this feature request so hopefully it won’t be to long coming.
  6. Ah well at least I know it’s not me. Still until a fix comes along I can still use as a standalone if necessary, not that I use HDR everyday.
  7. As far as I understand the new version of CorelDraw is also now for Mac.
  8. Hi Kirkt Are you having any trouble with HDR Pro2. At the moment it opens up but there is no image. Maybe it's something to do with me. Everything else works just fine.
  9. Yeah kirkt just got the notification and bought so hopefully all will be well with the world. Thanks for posting though.
  10. Oh ok. Look forward to the new update in due course then. Thanks for clarification.
  11. HI Kirkt I'm a little confused now as I have the latest version of NiK Collection V1.1 and am running on iMac with Mojave but still cannot get passed this Fonts Updating and locking up issue. I have left a topic on the DxO forum to see what they say about the problem. I'm assuming windows uses have no problem as it appears to be an Apple code issue. I am also running the latest version 1.7.0.130 of Photo. What version of Apples software are you using? Can't get my head around how you now don't have a problem on Mac. I'm also intrigued by when you say upcoming version of Nik Collection, the latest version I know of is NiK 1.1. I don't know of any other.
  12. Kirkt Are you using windows or Mac because I still get font update issue with version 1.7.0.128. I just tried it. I’m on Mac.
  13. Hi Kirkt Did you download an up date from the DxO website or did your version update automatically, or do you mean Serif have fixed the problem with this version update? I could never ascertain from either Serif or DxO who the problem really was with. Sounds promising though, great if fixed. Thanks for the update.
  14. Ah great Alfred, yes of coarse. Why didn’t I think of that. It’s that question where you know the answer but you can’t quite think of it. I’ll add that to my knowledge base.
  15. Thanks MEB for your response. I can always use as a stand-alone for now if necessary. Hopefully it will be resolved soon. Showing my ignorance, what’s COP Red Angel? Haven’t heard that one before.
  16. Simple question. Has anyone managed to get DxO Nic collection to work in Photo 1.7 beta without the "updating fonts" keep popping up and locking everything up. On DxO website it appears to say they have made it more compatible with third party (Affinity) software but I'm not sure how old the info is as it shows the logo for version 1.6. I can only assume no further progress on this issue has been made between Affinity and DxO at this time.
  17. Hi Patrick I’m not sure I follow you as you said you envisaged adding tri-fold, Quad- fold and Z-Fold etc and you add ( I.e menu). I assume you mean then that you intend to add a few more presets (templates) to the existing drop down menu when choosing new. That’s not at all going to help creatives who like to decide on the the layout dimensional process. It would appear that Serif are, at least for the time being, going to concentrate on no more than bog standard design work. What you have illustrated if I have read you post correctly is a standard gate fold. I have said that creatives need freedom of expression when designing and that means being able to choose the layout to suit there vision. InDesign provides this and has done for some while. Why would any designer push to one side an established piece of software which has given them flexibility and has worked well for them for some years suddenly choose a new software which takes them back in time and restricts their creativity. From your post Patrick it comes across that Serif does not recognise or even accept that there is a need to expand the page layout tab I.e being able to shuffle pages and choose different dimensions etc (see post by Mark Oehlschlager and the illustration). In my time as a designer, I have worked on brochures, leaflets, exhibition stands, building wraps, vehicle graphics, packaging, In store displays and merchandising. I believe I am qualified to raise this issue as a genuine concern and can only hope that Serif looks again at its approach to page layout as there are a number of other posts here echoing the same thing and I’m sure there are others in the design community that will be looking closely at whether Apub is a serious option for them or not going forward into the future. Can you just confirm Patrick, is it just you that sees these posts or are they generally viewed for comment and consideration by more senior staff. I apologise if my post is a little tiresome as I know you are often all hammered from all sides but the layout tab itself needs looking at sooner rather than later, not expanding the new page layout menu. Fortunately I have CS6 so I don’t have a subscription to worry about so I can carry on with that perfectly well for the time being but I had high hopes for Apub as It is potentially a good program and it is very fast and efficient.
  18. Thomaso I don’t think I can help you much more here as if you don’t even know what “ design industry standard” means I suggest you do some research on the internet.
  19. Thomaso, I already have designer and have had since its release so I do have knowledge of it’s working. QuarkXPress, InDesign and Publisher are not dedicated vector programs although I will give you that they do handles vector. They are first and foremost page layout programs. Illustrator, CoralDraw, Affinity Designer and Freehand (now defunct) are dedicated vector programs. Why do you think the design industry standard Is either InDesign or QuarkXPress for page layout. Do you not think the design industry would have adopted your approach for page layout if that was the best way. I can see you are convinced your way is the right way and as I have said before, if it works for you, fantastic.
  20. Patrick I think you have contradicted yourself. You say no not templates. Pre determined trifold, quad folds etc as a menu are exactly that, they are called templates. You can download any of these “document models” as you call them as templates and more from any good prepress printer and in a number of formats so I can’t see what real benefits this will give to creative designers who do not need bog standards templates. Would be more helpful to follow a similar approach to InDesign and allow creatives to work their own layouts out according to their specific design needs.
  21. By the way Patrick, what do you mean by “document models” do you mean “presets” because that’s not what is needed. Designers need to be able to choose there layout as they see fit according to the design they have in mind. Presets is not what we need.
  22. Hi Patrick in response to your post, I understand that it’s not straight forward to code something like this but that surely doesn’t mean you put it off incorporating because it’s difficult. Publisher is entering an established professional market, least ways the professional market is what I understood Serif to be aiming at. To release a professional program like this has to be able to appeal to creative designers not just publishers which is where Serifs focus seems to be at the moment. It strikes me Patrick that if you know that implementation of this function will be difficult from past experience then forward planning for development of this program incorporating this function should have been considered at an early stage of the programming process and allowed time for it to be an integral part of the program on launch. I’m not sure it is a clever idea to launch a supposedly professional piece of software with such a restrictive glaring omission bearing in mind how long it will be before your next update which I assume will be many months away. I can’t see many creatives hanging around waiting in anticipation of when you will get round to implementing a better page layout function.
  23. I’m not wholly understanding you Thomaso. Firstly, I’m not overall unhappy with Publisher, on the contrary, it’s essentially a very good program. It’s just that it’s not catering at this time for creative designers and seems to be focused fully on the publishing market. Publisher is first and foremost a page layout program similar to InDesign in its context, it’s not meant to mimic Microsoft Word. In all my years as a designer, never have I seen any professional designer, of which I have seen many, use a vector dedicated program to layout pages, although we know you can to a degree. I say with respect I have not a clue what you are referring to with regard to “emails to client project and accounting/writing bills to client etc ”, what is all that about? What on earth has that got to do with page layout and design. Publisher is there to be able to layout images, text and colour in a coordinated way as to produce a variety of design ideas and projects, it’s not there just to produce large numbers of text pages. There are many posts on this forum with regard to this issue, maybe reading some of those may help further to explain the virtues of page flexibility and using a dedicated page Layout program. I get the impression you may think Publisher is for long text application like Microsoft Word which of course it is but it’s not solely a text program, it’s a page layout program. I don’t know that I can enlighten you further on this subject as you seem happy to produce your design work in a vector program. If it works for you that way then that’s fine. I can’t really add any more to this Thomaso.
  24. Hi Thomaso I have had many unusual requests for brochure design over the years, to give you an example, I was asked to produce a brochure but the client didn’t want a bog standard design. I created a brochure with three full size pages(allowing for fold) folding in on themselves. I also created a further 2x one third pages which also folded in on pages 1&3. This is just one example of why you need to have page spread flexibility as a creative design. As I’ve said, if your main function is that of a publisher, a two page spread is sufficient. If you are a creative then your remit will likely often require something out of the ordinary. In the case of a book jacket I would create this separate from the book pages but I would not want to keep switching from on program to another in the typical cases I have outlined. If this is such a minor issue as some believe it is then why do I read so many posts raising the same issue with publisher. Personally, I can’t see many creative designers in UK adopting Apub while it remains deficient in this area. Who knows I could be wrong but having been around the block a few times during my career as an all round designer I think it will be a hard sell in its current form. By the way, I will correct myself with regard Qexpress, you are right fde101 it’s not as flexible as InDesign but then I haven’t used Qexpress since 2001, I thought Qexpress had added that in 2018...WRONGLY. If you don’t agree with me on this issue, that’s fine. What has annoyed me most though is that no one from Serif has bothered in my posts to respond and explained to me the reasoning behind not making the page layout tab more usable so that creatives can be catered for as well as publishers.
