HELP!
Raymondo replied to Chris Nathan's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
I had a similar problem with AD on recent update only I kept getting an error message when trying to open app. The team suggested I might have a font problem somewhere. I was convinced My fonts were ok, turns out after drilling down that I did in fact have a font which was interfering was AD. As soon as I got rid of it AD worked fine. Maybe same with you. -
Yeah, not using AP enough at the moment to really tell which method is the most effective, PS or AP. At the moment using a curve graph method maybe slightly over engineering a fairly simply process. There is considerably control using the sliders. That said I think I need to replicate a couple of real time projects in both programs and make a more informed opinion then as to which is more effective, straight forward and easy to use.

One other thing, In Photoshop you have the choice to enlarge the thumbnail in layers but there doesn't appear a facility to do the same in AP. With regard to the above post you may have an answer to some of these hidden in the software somewhere, if so please let know.

Hi After using the beta AP version 1.5 for a few days I have a few things as a designer that I would like to point out. 1) When using the blur - Zoom blur does not create enough blur effect without having to repeat and repeat blur. Should be fully controllable from the slider as in Photoshop. 2) After trying the different blur effects I don't find the effects that much different from each other, to me some seem to just reproduce the same or near effect so can't see a need for some of these. 3) Cannot save new profiles in FX. This is a minus and should be addressed. There quite a few in Photoshop which help produce different results. No pattern or satin effect in FX. Again these need to be included soon from a creative view point. No blending option - blend if option in layer styles. This is something that again is very useful

Forgot to say that If you are using a mac you can use short cut "control / option / E to merge selected layers. Some may know this, others may not but useful to know as I couldn't initially find a command for this when I right clicked to merge down selected layers. The manual does I believe cover this but does not give you any idea about merging selected layers.

Ah! Found the tutorial on "Live Projection". Now I get it. -
Photo 1.5 Release Candidate
Raymondo replied to Raymondo's topic in [ARCHIVE] Photo beta on macOS threads
Hi Well the purchased app was in my application folder but it was nested in a sub folder which I overlooked. I've now pulled it out of the sub folder and It now works fine. First impression of the update seem good. I can report that Google's Nic Collection now fully works and so does Filter Forge. One thing I'm a bit unsure of is the new "Live Projection" as I can't see what this could be used for. What is it supposed to do? I can't imagine what value it is in either photo manipulation or Photography. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to the use you think it is in either of the disciplines please. Early days as I have only downloaded it today so will give further comments in due course. Still, looks like there has been some good improvements and progress towards becoming a real Adobe competitor. -
Hi Have just downloaded the 1.5 Release Candidate but when I go to open it, it asks for a purchased copy to be installed which I do have. What's the way forward on this issue please. Regards

Hi all Although this won't help window users I have noticed a piece of software on line called " iStudio Publisher for mac" which at first glance looks a fairly fully featured page layout programme given that it costs very little. It is not going to be a replacement for InDesign but it may help to come away from Adobe until Affinity Publisher is released. I have no experience of using this software but considering it only costs twenty odd pounds it has to be worth a punt if you really can't wait for Affinity Publisher.

It would be advantageous to be able to save new profiles that you make in FX 3D and Emboss so that they are available for future use. In Photoshop there are many more profiles available. This would be a great time saver instead of trying to recreate profiles every time.

I'm not sure if I'm not seeing something but I can't see how to align horizontally and vertically let's say for instance, for squares aligned in a square with equal margins between each. It's straight forward enough in illustrator but not seeing it in designer. Can you give me a pointer here on how this is achieved in designer.

I was hoping Alfred that whilst expanding capability for UI and web production that there would also be an undertaking in the list to provide more of the basic tools, and I might add, very useful tools that Illustrator has in it's tool box such as I have listed. At present I still have to use Illustrator as I find at the moment to many short comings and work around's that slow me up in the AD toolbox. Most of the items I have listed have also at different times been asked for by others as being very useful and should after what, two years now be in the toolbox as standard. I still don't see any prospect of these being added to the roadmap which makes me feel that the AD development team are straying from the path a wee bit. Yep we all know this is a fledgling software but when you enter into an established market you can't start at the very bottom and therefore basic tools come first, whistle and bells second. This is in many ways is a very competent piece of software but it's still very clunky and awkward in it's approach and a way off yet to truly rival Illustrator, at least for me for now. It seems the team are listening to much to web designers and not enough to illustrators. I would suggest you take a look at the website here and the logo designs done with Illustrator http://www.creatnprocess.net A lot of these were achieved using the 3D feature and other tools I have listed which you can't at present create in AD in the same way.
-
Yeah but that was over two years ago and I don't see many of these items in the latest update. So just where are they with these, would help to have an update roadmap. Just seems the team are more concentrating on UI and web base capabilities and not so much on illustration production tools.

Hi As great as the new update 1.5 is, I feel Designer is not yet ready to rival Illustrator. Basic tools not yet available in Designer: 1) Shape Builder tool 2) Spiral tool 3) Distort & Tranform 4) ZIg Zag, Roughen and Transform tool 5) Envelope Distort tool 6) Edit colours - recolour artwork facility The above are just some of the obvious basic tools which by now Designer should have in it's arsenal. I have once before mentioned the shape builder tool and so have others but clearly it's not considered important enough, shame. I would also say that that a 3D feature like Illustrator is very very useful in the creation of Logo's but from what I've read it also is not considered important. It seems to me that the team are concentrating on too many whistle and bells production improvements without first making sure designers have a good bag of basic tools. Don't get me wrong, Great product and I applaud what you are doing but please walk before you run and make sure Affinity Designer can truly rival Illustrator which at present it can't, there are too many creative tools missing. By the way, unless I'm not looking in the right place, I don't see any update road maps. Any comments please.

Designer 1.5
Raymondo replied to Raymondo's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Now the beta version will not import any pixel or vector images onto the canvas. Interestingly the image shows up in the layers panel but sadly just a blank image placeholder on the canvas. I am so wanting you to succeed but until you can provide me with software that works it's back to good old Adobe illustrator I'm afraid. Please don't make it too long to provide a stable platform. -

Hi OK I will use the beta for now but how will I know when the issues have been fixed? -

Hi I did what you suggested and ditched app into trash and deleted. Great so far, was then able to reinstall from app store but I get a message (attached) when downloaded. As a result of this message I can't get any of the studio assets to pop up, the program is not fully functioning. It would seem the software is corrupted in some way. Any ideas as I can't use the program as it is. I'm running OS Sierra. Untitled.tiff
